Hearing God in Scripture

Hearing God in Scripture

Austin and Joel

The title of our podcast is pretty straightforward. We are looking to hear God in Scripture. We believe proper hermeneutics is rare, that is, the ability to properly read the Bible is not commonly known or practiced. We believers are commanded to know and study the Scriptures. We should also study to properly understand what they say. These Scriptures are God’s words to us. God spoke to us. Now we need to read them right. Not only did God speak, He still speaks. We shouldn’t just read the Scripture to pull it apart and examine it, we should be listening to God, listening for His voice as we read the text. Our hermeneutic is, “the Text is the Master”. We submit to the text. We do not have the right to twist it around to make it say what we want it to say. Rather, we discover what God is saying to us through His Word. Then we submit to whatever He says. So, hear God in the Scriptures. That is what we are trying to do and we invite you to do this with us.

Simon Magus wants to buy the spiritual power, giving of the Holy Spirit, from Peter. This desire to pay for this ability so that Simon can be great with the people is the gall of bitterness. When we seek to get or use something religious so that we can be more important we are in the gull of bitterness.

Joseph is given the directions about naming Jesus. Joseph, however, is the right person to name Jesus and help him come into the world because of his characteristics. Hearing God in Scripture - 7: Oh Lord, Why Have You Done Evil (Exodus 5:22)
play

02/10/25 • 22 min

We often cry out for deliverance, just as the Israelites and Moses did. However, the deliverance we receive from God does not come about the way we want. How do we handle this disappointing way God has worked? Moses shows us how to handle these “evils” so that we can tell the truth, be ready for God’s deliverance, and become the people God wants us to be.

Exodus 5:22
Then Moses turned to the LORD and said, “O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.”

The early church did hard things, such as disciplining Ananias and Saphira. However, because they did the disciplining, and did it well, they remained pure. The result was that they were a powerful church, and everyone around them could see it. God intends to make us into a powerful church, just as He did the early church.

Acts 5:13

13 None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem.

Hearing God in Scripture - 5: When the Lord Saw That He Turned Aside (Exodus 3:4)
play

01/27/25 • 34 min

God lit a bush on fire to get Moses’ attention. God then called him to Himself and to the job God had for him. God does and will do the same for us. He is looking to call us to Himself and to the task He has for us. What God is waiting for is for us to turn aside to that thing, that burning bush God has lit on fire for us.

Exodus 3:4

4 When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.”

Hearing God in Scripture - 22: If You Knew the Gift (John 4:10)

In John 4:10, Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well and reveals a truth that still echoes today: “If you knew the gift of God...” She didn’t realize who she was speaking with, or the life-changing gift He was offering — Living Water. How often do we miss divine moments because we don’t recognize who’s before us? Jesus stands ready to give us more than we ask — not just physical sustenance, but eternal life, peace, and purpose. Are we truly aware of the One who seeks a relationship with us? This verse challenges us to open our eyes and hearts to the gift of God and to recognize the presence of Jesus in our everyday lives.

John 4:10

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
