Have you thought about building a home that encompasses your health and wellness goals, but figured it would be too expensive to build? A healthy home must cost more to build than a typical home, right? Guess what?! It doesn't have to! This podcast episode breaks down the myth that a healthy and eco-friendly home will cost more to build than a typical home. There are certain items that need to be included in a healthy home that will cost more than a typical home, but those costs can be balanced out by cost saving strategies that take place when designing a healthy home.

In this episode you will learn:

  • The two main items that will cost you more in a healthy home than a typically (code minimum) built home
  • What you and your designer can do in the design phase of your project to ensure that your house will be built as a healthy home without adding cost
  • How aligning your goals with your budget with help you offset the few high cost items of a healthy home
  • The areas where a healthy home will cost less than a typical home
Helpful Resources: I mention the Eight Healthy Home Elements when talking about the design of a healthy home. I've said it before, but I'll say it again 🙂 A healthy home is about SO much more than healthy air and water. This week on the Healthy Home Design podcast, I'm talking about the mental health side of a healthy home. And since mental health is also tied to physical health, the ideas I share in this episode are really powerful tools to treat both your brain and your body to some much needed r&r. While it is good to have calm spaces in all the rooms in your home, I think it is important to start with the entryway, the living room and the bedrooms. This episode will provide strategies to start transitioning your home to a calm retreat by focusing on these three rooms. There is also a fun bonus section at the end of this episode all about creating a meditation nook in your home. So if you've been interested in starting a meditation practice but have felt overwhelmed with how to start, this episode will help you take action. Many of my clients are renovating their homes or making small improvements to their existing homes and want to know where to invest their money to make the most impact on healthy living. When you are making home upgrades, the most costly areas of creating a healthier home will likely be for air quality. Since this can be expensive, you will want to put your money to the best use where it has the most impact for health. In the case of home upgrades that will be in your flooring finish and wall finish choices. Your floor and wall surfaces cover the most surface area of your home so their level of toxicity has an incredible impact on your home's air quality. This episode will dive into the best flooring and wall finish choices, plus talk about floor finishes that you should be avoiding.

We're continuing our healthy materials mini-series by answering listener questions specific to healthy building materials and finishes. Here are the questions we're covering this week:
  • I am doing a renovation to my house and have spent so much time searching for healthy building products. It's confusing because there is so much greenwashing, I don't know what I should believe. Now I'm frustrated and overwhelmed. Is there a place I can go to find out if a product is safe to use in my home?
  • I have to replace drywall and insulation due to mold remediation. What should I be choosing for healthy drywall and insulation for the new walls?
  • We are replacing the vinyl flooring in my house that was installed about 25 years ago with a floating wood floor. We pulled up a small section of it and it has a terrible toxic smell. What can we do to get rid of the smell before installing the new floor?
  • It seems like everything in our lives need to be non-toxic for us to be safe. From food, to clothing, car seats, shampoo, building materials. Is this really possible?
