EP 19 Sleep Tips with Krista Cumming
Health Hope Harmony: A Mental Health Podcast Redefining Health Restoring Hope Reaching Harmony
10/14/21 • 35 min
Hey there and welcome back to The Emotional Eating Therapist show. I’m glad you’re here.
This episode features my second sleep expert guest. You might be wondering why I brought on two gals who do similar work. Well, that’s a good question. 1. We learn differently from different people. You may resonate with one person more than another and therefore learn more, even if the two people said the exact same thing. 2. I believe in tearing down the competition between women struggle. You’ll hear more about this in my episode with my friend and colleague Vanessa which will air in Dec. Because we all have value to share and all have different personalities, there is no competition. Like I said before, you may hear many people say the same thing but it will resonate more when one person says it. 3. Repetition is great for learning. And when we hear multiple experts say something we are more likely to follow it.
Let me introduce my guest for this episode. Krista Cumming is a Sleep Expert and Registered Nutritional Therapist who helps midlife women learn how to balance their hormones so they can fall asleep and stay asleep without medication and wake up energized and refreshed.
A 30-year wellness industry veteran, Krista believes that sleep is the most important pillar of health. Krista has helped thousands of women receive the support they need and deserve through online summits and her signature program, The Sleep Better Tonight Method. She has been featured as a sleep expert on podcasts such as Midlife Matters, Thriving Thyroid and Messy Middle Road Trip. She lives in Toronto with her husband and rescue dog, Cody.
I hope you gain some insight into your sleep patterns and what you can do about it.

Ep 27 Habits: How they are created, strengthened, and how you can change the ones you don't want
Health Hope Harmony: A Mental Health Podcast Redefining Health Restoring Hope Reaching Harmony
12/09/21 • 20 min
In this episode we are talking about habits. How they are created, how they are strengthened and how we can change the ones we don’t want to keep.
Each morning, as part of my routine, I read the memories Facebook keeps for me. There are some from many years ago that have me cringing for how steeped in diet culture I was. But most of the time I enjoy reading about where I was at that point in my life and I love seeing the photos of Anthony as he grows.
This morning I was noticing a trend each year around this time and I’m curious Does this sound familiar to you, too??
Each December I’d start planning for my New Year’s Resolution to lose weight, get in shape, and FINALLY love my body.
I’d spend hours researching which diet was going to be the RIGHT one. The one that would finally allow me to keep off any weight that I did lose.
Throughout the month I would psych myself up for hitting the ground RUNNING come January 1st.
I’d have my meals planned out, time scheduled for meal prep so that even when I was super busy I could stick to the meal plan.
I’d plan out my workouts, meticulously timing the morning routine to know EXACTLY how much earlier I’d need to get up each day to get my workout in before Anthony got up, or while he was eating breakfast.
And then I would binge. This was the last month I’d be able to have these foods, right?! So why not indulge and enjoy ALL the foods I would be swearing off of. I now call this the Last Supper Syndrome. And what I didn’t know then was that I was making the problem worse and setting myself up for failure, yet again.
Join me as I discuss more how habits are formed, strengthened, and what you can do to change the ones you don't like.

EP 8 - I can't afford another program.
Health Hope Harmony: A Mental Health Podcast Redefining Health Restoring Hope Reaching Harmony
07/29/21 • 11 min
I’ve been hearing from several women how they’d love to put an end to dieting, transform their relationship with food and their body, and finally look and feel like they have their shit together but are concerned about spending more money on another program. Maybe you’re one of them.
I get it. I once added up all the money I had spent over the 20 plus years of dieting I had done. All of the shakes, pills, wraps, meal plans, all promising to be the missing magic ingredient that would suddenly transform me, giving me the body I wanted and the confidence I longed for. The amount of money was ridiculous. Tens of thousands of dollars and what did I have to show for it? Did I have the body or confidence I wanted? Nope, what I had was too many failed attempts to count, more weight than when I started, guilt, shame, and I still didn’t know how to accept myself or change how I ate. In fact I had created some disordered eating habits that were making things worse. So rather than this magical transformation I was promised I was left feeling more miserable than when I had begun.
This is where Ditch the Diet will help you.
I don’t want you to spend money on something you don’t understand or see value in. I don’t want you to spend money on something that may or may not work for you. OR something that will only work temporarily.
I want you to stop spending money on quick fixes and false promises.
I also know that sometimes when we’re given things for free we don’t value them as much. We need a little buy in to keep us going when things get tough. If working with me was free everyone would start, and then fizzle out when we get to the good stuff, where the real transformation happens.
I do have a special offer for those listening in real time. The next round of Ditch the Diet begins August 2nd, and you can join for one payment of $1,000 or $200 per month for the 5 months.
Like I said, I don’t want you to spend more money on something that won’t work for you, so I’ve opened up the application process so that we can see if we’d be a good fit for working together.
On this Zoom meeting we will briefly discuss why you want to ditch diets, what you’ve tried in the past, and what you’re hoping to get out of working together. After that, if we both feel we are a good fit for each other, I’ll send you the link to register for the next round.

92 - Compassionate Decluttering and the Human Side of Hoarding w/ guest Margo Nelson pt 1
Health Hope Harmony: A Mental Health Podcast Redefining Health Restoring Hope Reaching Harmony
01/04/24 • 29 min
When your living space starts resembling a storage unit for sentimental mementos, it might be time to explore the emotional ties that bind us to our belongings. That's exactly what we venture into with the compassionate guidance of Margo Nelson, a psychotherapist with a wealth of knowledge on hoarding disorder. Margo eloquently discusses how hoarding is often misconstrued, when in fact it's deeply rooted in emotional attachments to past memories and future anxieties, leading individuals to find comfort in their possessions.
Navigating the maze of hoarding behavior requires more than a simple tidying up. It's about understanding the person behind the possessions and fostering a supportive environment that's free from judgment. In our conversation, we uncover the creative minds of those who hoard and brainstorm alternative strategies that honor their relationship with their things while promoting a healthier lifestyle. The recent pandemic has brought to light the fragile line between necessity and excess, making this dialogue more relevant than ever.
As we wrap up, we touch upon the practicalities of living comfortably amidst the chaos, sharing strategies like the 'shoe box' method to help listeners find their ground between sentiment and functionality. Margo's insights are invaluable, not only for those grappling with hoarding tendencies but also for anyone trying to find that delicate equilibrium in life. Stay tuned for our next installment, where we'll be sharing hands-on decluttering tips that promise to bring order to the overwhelming storm of possessions.

EP 12 - IE Principles 5&6: Feel Your Fullness and Discover the Satisfaction Factor
Health Hope Harmony: A Mental Health Podcast Redefining Health Restoring Hope Reaching Harmony
08/26/21 • 17 min
This episode covers Principle 5 & 6 of intuitive eating. Feeling our fullness and discovering the satisfaction factor. We talk about diets leading to membership in the clean plate club and leading to overeating. One way to address this is the hunger fullness scale.
We then talk about fully enjoying our foods and how to get the most satisfaction out of our meals. Tribole and Resch give us 5 steps to follow to tap into the satisfaction factor.
1. Ask yourself what you REALLY want to eat. You’ve given yourself unconditional permission to eat, or at least you are working on it, so you are free to choose foods you enjoy.
2. To discover what foods you really like and to increase the satisfaction in your eating, focus on your senses while you eat.
- Taste: put the food in your mouth and notice the taste.
- Texture: notice how the food feels in your mouth.
- Smell: appreciate the various aromas that foods can emit. I
- Appearance: Take a look at the food you are about to eat. Is it fit for a queen or rubbish fed to the dungeons?
- Volume or filling-capacity: Some days you may want something light while others you want a filling plate of pasta.
Remember to embrace your uniqueness. Everyone has different experiences with taste and textures. And be aware that your preferences may change throughout your life.
Step 3: make your eating experience more enjoyable. l: eat Slowly, eat sensually, and savor every bite.
Step 4: don’t settle. You are not obligated to finish something just because you started it. If it isn’t working or you don’t like it, stop.
Step 5: check in, does it still taste good? If it no longer tastes good and is no longer bringing pleasure, then stop eating it!
