Healing for Male Survivors with Mike Chapman

Healing for Male Survivors with Mike Chapman

Mike Chapman

Welcome to the Healing for Male Survivors Podcast, where male survivors of childhood trauma, especially sexual trauma, can find hope and healing. My main goal is to give a platform to YOU, my listener and fellow survivor. I want to make this a safe space for you to tell YOUR story - and telling your story can often jumpstart your healing. This *is* a faith-based podcast, but do not expect a lot of preaching, but I want to welcome anyone here regardless of faith. **Trigger Warning/Explicit Content Warning** - we will talk openly and frankly about sexual abuse from the victims perspective.

Our 5th LIVE interview.

This week we have “Ed K” as our guests.

Ed K is a native of the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. He talks about his years of growing up, becoming a husband and father, and moving through to his middle age years knowing something was wrong. In spite of having a wonderful life, great kids, a strong faith, and a late bloomer in reaching a successful career, he was being pulled into unwanted behaviors by an evil force. For most of his childhood and adult years he was easily manipulated, unable to say no to almost everything, afraid to make himself visible and share his talents, and be his true self. An inner child visit changed everything for him.

Note: After the recording, Ed shared with me that while he was sharing, new memories came up (things he had forgotten about) and he ended up sharing those as well during our interview.

This is the second of a 3-part recording of a live Zoom event that happened on October 25, 2022 in honor of Male Survivor Awareness Day The event was the result of efforts by myself, Drew Boa, Dr. Doug Carpenter, with many contributions from Survivors within HM (who submitted poetry and other items to be shared, some live, some previously recorded and some read by others). There will also be a time for Questions and Answers. The goal for this event (and the “Day” in total) was to help non-survivors understand and work with survivors to help support them on their healing journeys. With Drew's permission I am sharing the episode with you here. Due to the length, I am dividing it into 3 podcast episodes.

Original video version of this interview is available on YouTube.

Here is the original description from Drew's Podcast:

Kyle Drossel is a 31-year-old man who has been through a lot. He recently found his way back to God, and that has helped him feel more at peace. He likes to spend his free time hiking and running, which helps him clear his head. But Kyle still struggles with relationships because of something that happened to him when he was 13. The assistant fire chief of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, someone he trusted, sexually assaulted him. This experience led Kyle down a bad path of using drugs and alcohol, but he's happy to say that he's sober now. He wants to help others who have gone through similar things, so he started a group called "Breaking the Silence." Kyle's goal is to help men feel comfortable talking about their problems and getting help. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can inspire others to do the same and create a community where men can support each other. Kyle also wants to spread awareness about the dangers of turning to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with trauma, and he hopes that his story can help prevent others from going down the same path he did.

Healing for Male Survivors with Mike Chapman - 11 - Male Survivor Awareness Day 2023, Part 3 (from the Husband Material LIVE event 10/25/23)
play

11/21/23 • 45 min

This is the third of a 3-part live Zoom event in honor of Male Survivor Awareness Day

Back on October 25, 2023, MenHealing continued the tradition set in 2022 of Recognizing that day as Male Survivor Awareness Day to coincide with the month of October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month. While they planned their own event, Drew Boa of Husband Material and I thought it would be good to again set up another live event this year, after doing a similar event for 2022. This included participation of the Husband Material Membership, specifically its sub-group fellowship for Abuse Survivors. Fellowship members submitted poetry and other items to be shared, some live, some previously recorded, and some read by others. The event was co-hosted by myself and Dr. Doug Carpenter, Author of Secret Shame: A Survivor's Guide To Understanding Male Sexual Abuse And Male Sexual Development. This year we came up with a theme: “Disclosure” - why it often takes so long to tell anyone about the abuse.

The goal for this event (and the “Day” in total) was to help non-survivors understand and work with survivors to help support them on their healing journeys. A 2nd goal of our specific event was to help people understand better the concept of disclosure and why it takes survivors so long to tell others. With Drew's permission I am sharing the audio from the event with you here. Due to the length, I am dividing it into 3 podcast episodes.
