HawkeTalk
Erik Huberman
No one decides to wake up one day, walk across Antarctica, or leave their bohemian parents and join the Navy Seals. Or any number of crazy, amazing things that people do. These aren’t the dreams most kids have. And yet, fascinating people have done them. How? Why?
HawkeTalk is a podcast all about the origin stories of the most interesting people in the world. Today, you know our guests are famous athletes, authors, and entrepreneurs, but there’s so much more to the story. How did they navigate upbringings that seem so far from what they eventually became? What pivotal moments steered them in a new and fascinating direction forever?
Buckle up: Everyone loves a good origin story.

HawkeTalk

If your toilet doesn't stink, thank Suzy Batiz. She's the woman behind Poo-Pourri, a fragrant oil spray that coats your commode's water.
Suzy wasn't always a leading expert in bathroom odors, though. Nor was she always a multi-millionaire entrepreneur. Suzy grew up hard. By the time she turned 21, she had already declared bankruptcy once, lived through sexual abuse, and survived a suicide attempt.
But a tough life gave Suzy one thing she needed to succeed in business — hope.
In this episode, Suzy Batiz talks about her life from abused child to self-made entrepreneur.
Listen in as Suzy and Erik chat about...
- Growing up in a dysfunctional family
- Plunging into depression after a second bankruptcy
- Suzy's spiritual journey
- The humble beginnings and growing pains of Poo-Pourri

Sometimes you go searching for a career.
Other times, the career seems to find you.
Which is exactly what happened for Marty Callner. Marty is a world renowned television director who has directed some of the biggest names on the planet (Jerry Seinfeld, Cher, and Garth Brooks to name a few) and learned a ton along the way.
Oh, and he also started at HBO when there were 7 employees, and directed nearly every major music video from the 1980’s.
But he didn’t grow up wanting a career in Hollywood. How did that happen then? It involved a three month bender, Nietzsche, and a chance interview at a television station as an out of work 22 year old.
What we talked about
- How his parent’s divorce tuned his eye towards the artistic.
- Why a three month bender on psychedelics opened his creative side.
- Joining HBO in the early stages.
- How he ended up directing the world’s biggest stars.

Embracing change and finding work you excel at — because you love it so much it isn’t really work.

Adversity being overcome makes for the best stories. Especially when it’s overcome, overcome, and overcome again.
Former White House Communications Director and Founder of SkyBridge Capital, Anthony Scaramucci, knows this story well. Growing up on lower-middle-class Long Island as the son of a construction worker doesn’t shout Harvard Law or Goldman Sachs, but that was Scaramucci’s path nonetheless.
In this episode of HawkeTalk, Erik and Anthony discuss...
- The power of perseverance in school and work
- How being fired can turn into an opportunity
- Why making the life you want means not caring what others think
