A Great Alternative To Waikiki And Honolulu : Hawaii Travel Podcast Show 27
Hawaii Travel Podcast
06/11/13 • 33 min
Today we’ll tell you about a great alternative to Waikiki and Honolulu, and we’ll flip the tables, and we’ll read some listener emails that came in with answers to questions WE had. All that and more on this episode of The Hawaii Travel Podcast.
Last week we showcased David, Georgia and Richard’s incredible 4 islands in 8 days vacation, and we had a few questions. Dave was nice enough to write in with some answers...
Thanks for featuring us on this week’s podcast! It was great to hear your input and suggestions for next time. Here are answers to a couple of questions that came up during the podcast.
Queen Liliuokalani Gardens to Rainbow Falls/Pe’epe’e Falls & Boiling Pots and Akaka Falls Question:
– How long did it take?
We did it in a couple of hours, but Akaka Falls was pretty rushed (it’s further north and far off the main road). They rest are very close to Hilo. [DETAILED MAP]
Safari Helicopters Question
– How close to crater? Did we see lava?
We did not get very close to the crater (and there wasn’t much activity in the crater other than steam blow-off during the helicopter tour). We flew by the lava flowing into the ocean and over hot spots in the lava stream (also some of the few surviving patches from the town). Also, it started raining during our flight, sending up sheets of steam.
Coco Palms Question
– Do they have a tour?
We did our own quick look around because we just missed the 2pm tour. Apparently they are in the middle of a fight to get it open again
I would call the tour number (808-346-2048) to find out before showing up for the tour.
International Market plans?
Looks like the International Market is slated for redevelopment
but not without some opposition
Thanks again!
Second email came in multiple parts from Marge in New Jersey...
Parts of this email features “play-by-play” action...
Hi Dan and Jennifer,
I love listening to your podcast and want to share an interesting fact I just found out. I am on the Big Island right now and wanted you and your listeners to know that rental cars can be infested with roaches. My husband went out to our rental car last evening and to his surprise he found them crawling around in the car. Needless to say I wish I knew this was a possibility as I would have checked the car more thoroughly yesterday when we picked it up. I thought I would pass this on to other listeners just in case.
Right now we are staying at the Volcano House which is on the rim of the Kilauea Caldera in Volcanoes National Park. What a beautiful view, at this moment there is a rainbow over the crater. My husband is trying to get a picture of it. Ok he got the picture it looks good.
We really love this park. I think my favorite place here is at the end of Chain of Craters Road and walking out to see the ocean from the cliffs. I feel really blessed to be able to see and experience Hawaii.
We’re leaving for home tomorrow. It’s been a great trip. The best part about getting home is going through all the photos we took then making a book or two through shutterfly.
The second email continued with her answering my question about what it was like to sleep so close to an active volcano in the Volcano House...
It looked awesome, how often do you have an opportunity to see and be so close to nature like that. I slept with the drapes open and when I woke up about 1:30 am and saw the glow from the crater. As dark as it was outside with the orange glow off in the distance lighting up the sky and still the night sky with all the stars were so beautiful.
Our room had a nice view, it was partially obstructed by a tree, however from my side of the bed I could clearly see the glow.
The hotel was completely open including the restaurants which were good and reasonably priced.
Unfortunately we weren’t able to take the trek to see the flowing lava. I wouldn’t have been able ...
How To Explore Four Islands In Eight Days And Celebrate King Kamehameha Day: Hawaii Travel Podcast Show 26
Hawaii Travel Podcast
06/04/13 • 39 min
The Hawaii Travel Podcast, show number 26 for Tuesday June 4th, 2013. Today we’ll discuss a holiday fit for a king, King Kamehameha and King Kamehameha Day. And, can you explore four islands in just eight days? You bet, find out how on this episode of The Hawaii Travel Podcast.
FOUR ISLANDS IN EIGHT DAYSWe received a great email from David, Georgia and Richard...
Just got back from our Hawaii vacation and wanted to thank you for your informative program. In case anyone else asks a similar question (or you do a show about how to manage mad scrambles around multiple islands – in this case four islands in eight days), here is what we ended up doing:
We rented a car on each island and made all of our arrangements independently. We decided this was much more time-efficient and was as cheap or cheaper than the excursions offered through the ship.
We flew to Honolulu (from LA) on a Friday on Hawaiian Airlines. (Note: it might be worth mentioning the jet lag – in our case, 3 hours, but for others we talked to, from 5 to 8! It made our early mornings easier, but we were all ready for bed by 9pm or so the entire week.)
OAHU
We arrived by 8am at each new port on the cruise. We booked a car from Hertz, where there was a long line/long wait for the car despite our reservation and got stuck in Waikiki traffic (worse than usual due to a bomb threat that day). Eventually we made our way to the Waikiki Beach Marriott, which had an extraordinary view of the beach. (Note: The Diamond Head end of Waikiki Beach seems a little more laidback and less like an upscale mall than the Royal Hawaiian end of the beach – at the end of the trip we stayed at the Aqua Waikiki Wave, where we had the same issue with sink in bathroom, and found the Las Vegas-like streetscape pretty exhausting.) We had dinner at Lulu’s – thanks for the tip! Great food and beachy ambiance – then back to our hotel balcony to watch the Hilton Hawaiian Village fireworks at 7:30.
Next morning, we went to Leonards for malasadas. They were incredible – particularly the mango filling (so good we came back our last day for more)! Then we drove up to the Diamond Head Farmers Market then over to the Pali Lookout for our own modified Circle Tour. We boarded our cruise ship, the Pride of America , in the afternoon and enjoyed the view from our corner suite, which had a large balcony with great views from ocean of each island though the port locations were not always scenic.
MAUI
The ship made the overnight trip to Kahului, Maui and the next morning we picked-up car at Kahului Airport then drove to Maui Tropical Plantation where we tried the zipline, which was fun but not necessarily a must-do for Hawaii. For lunch, we tried the Don Ho Burger at the Cool Cat Cafe in Lahaina, before boarding the Atlantis Submarine , which was a fun way to get underwater without getting wet (one in our party doesn’t swim). After the submarine ride, we wandered up and down Front Street stopping at Ululani’s Shave Ice , which was extraordinary. In the evening, we went to the Feast at Lele, a food-centric luau with a beautiful oceanfront location, good food and great show. The next day we visited the Iao Needle, walking the paved 1⁄2 mile loop up, then drove up to the Surfing Goat Dairy where we sampled some of their delicious cheeses and visited the kids. We returned to Kahului and overnight the ship continued to Hilo on the Big Island.
BIG ISLAND
We picked-up a rental car at Hilo Airport (note: there was a shuttle available at each port to the car rental places and shuttles back to the ship from the rental place). We drove through Queen Liliuokalani Gardens to Rainbow Falls/Pe’epe’e Falls & Boiling Pots and Akaka Falls before returning to the airport for our Safari helicopter tour over Kalapana and Volcanos National Park, a stark and awe-inspiring landscape. Next we drove to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory for the self-tour and lunch, then to Lava Tree State Monument and along the often one-lane road to Kalapana. On the way we stopped at the MacKenzie State...

Trek To Goat Island And The Kukaniloko Birthstones Site: Show 29
Hawaii Travel Podcast
07/16/13 • 24 min
The Hawaii Travel Podcast Show 29 for Tuesday July 16th 2013. This week’s show we’ll talk about an utterly fun trek to Goat Island. All that and more on this episode of The Hawaii Travel Podcast.
GOAT ISLAND HIKEGoat Island is about 700 feet off the shore of Malaekahana Beach.
It is a protected seabird sanctuary, a very fun time.
This might be a fun diversion on your way to or from the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Must wear some water shoes, the bottom is a little rough, you are walking across the reef. You can buy them at any of the local stores, ABC, grocery stores etc, they are about $9. Worth the investment. Remember, you will be getting wet, because you have to walk through the ocean, sometimes it is deep, so any valuables you have will get wet, so a good idea is to buy a waterproof bag, a zip lock bag would work, in fact, maybe your toiletry bag you used on your flight will work. A little double duty work.
Your reward for making this hike – a beautiful, somewhat isolated beach. The swimming here is great because the beach is protected, so the waters are pretty calm.
Like we said, the beach is a protected seabird sanctuary. The birds lay their eggs and nest in the middle of the island, so don’t go into the middle of the island, instead, follow the perimeters of the island, and that is where here you want to be anyway, because that is where the awesome beaches are.
Animals you may see, of course birds, sea turtles and if you are lucky, Monks Seals enjoy sunning on the beaches of Goat Island.
WARNING:
Look at the surf, if the waves are big, don’t go. And, beware of going in during the winter months. Because the surf does this crazy thing where it kind of wraps around either side of the island and they meet right in the path of where you will be wading to the island, so it is easy to get knocked off your feet. In fact, we wouldn’t recommend going unless you are a somewhat experienced swimmer.
KUKANILOKO BIRTHSTONESKukaniloko Birthstones
At the intersection of Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 99) and Whitmore Avenue on the north side of Wahiawa.
The Kukaniloko Birthstones is a very important culture stop on Oahu. It is where Oahu’s high chiefs were said to be born.

Big Island Honeymoon Ideas: Show 36
Hawaii Travel Podcast
09/10/13 • 37 min
The Hawaii Travel Podcast Show 36 for Tuesday September 10th 2013. On this episode we’ll talk about Big Island Honeymoon ideas, and Nina wrote back with an update on her excellent Oahu water adventures. All that and more, on this episode of the Hawaii Travel Podcast.
OAHU SNORKELINGListener Nina wrote in with an update on her trip...
Hey guys I just got back from my trip and I had a great time! What ended up happening is we went to Kailua for 3 nights then 3 nights in Laie then 4 nights in diamond head. Thank you for giving me advice and I took it! I went snorkeling at Hanauma bay and that was so awesome and almost magical! I even got to see a turtle up close! And since I was staying on the San Suci beach I went snorkeling there too! Another place I went was more on the north shore while we were staying in Laie, called sharks cove. I highly recommend it! What I think is unique about it is that it is so deep and is thick with fish! I think I like sharks cove best because at Hanauma bay we went at low tide and was constantly scraping my belly. What I like about sharks cove is that it is so deep u won’t be stepping on the coral. And remember the podcast where you talked about the humuhumunukunukuapua’a grunting if you cornered it? I heard it! There was even a tall rock that me and my cousins jumped off of! That was about the extent of snorkeling that I did! I did get a chance to see the aquarium and saw the monk seals! And when I was in Laie there was one right outside in the water by my house! So that was cool! Sadly I didn’t get to do the water jet pack thing but if I did get the chance to I am not sure I would have so Dan good job!! And thanks so much!
-Nina
We talked about how beautiful Shark’s Cove is and shared a link to an in-depth website about Shark’s Cove. http://www.hawaiisnorkelingguide.com/sharks_cove.html
SEA TURTLE ABUSEWe wanted again to share the telephone numbers for Sea Turtle and other sea life to report abuse.
- To report an injured, stranded, or entangled marine mammal (i.e. whale, dolphin, seal) in trouble, please call the NOAA Marine Mammal Hotline: 1-888-256-9840
- To report marine mammal or sea turtle disturbance or legal violation, please call the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement Hotline: 1-800-853-1974 and then call DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) statewide hotline: 643-DLNR (3567)
Listener Bill sent the following email...
We have an upcoming honeymoon to the Big Island (spending 7 days in Kona and 3 days in Hilo). I have been listening to older podcast and taking notes (as well as reading several travel guides). Do you have any specific tips or recommendations?
Thanks,
-Bill
Nothing says romance more than star gazing. Jennifer shared a unique idea – Stargazing On Mauna Kea...
Watching the sunset at the summit then stargazing at the Visitor Information Station of Mauna Kea is an amazing, once in a lifetime experience. The skies are dark and the stars are visually stunning. As much as stargazing on Mauna Kea is an special experience, but you need to be prepared. First, take a look at your rental car agreement- most companies say not to drive on Saddle Road (the road that goes to the mountain), so keep that in mind. The road is steep, windy, and rough. So even if you are allowed you may feel nervous driving yourself. There are some licensed tour operations that will take you, which is another option. If you want to go to the actual summit, you will need a 4X4 vehicle and keep in mind- again- the road is treacherous in places- so you may want to skip this part and just do the stargazing from the Visitor Station unless you research and get a solid plan in place.
Another thing to keep in mind is the weather. It is cold on top of the mountain! Bring a coat and extra clothing you can put on if you get cold. You can find the official forecast here: http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/forecast/mko/index.cgi

KO OLINA KIDS IDEASMichelle and Alan emailed in...
Dear Dan and Jennifer-
We are traveling to Oahu in April with our kids and are looking for a few unique ideas to do with them. Any thoughts? PS We will be staying in the Ko Olina area.
-Michelle and Alan. Austin TX
Two fun suggestions:
Our own mixologist Jennifer created the signature cocktail of the Hawaii Travel Podcast. It’s called the Molokini and it is VERY tasty, and, it packs quite a punch. A nice Hawaiian Punch!
Ingredients:
- 1 ounce Triple Sec
- 1 ounce Rum
- 1/2 ounce Roses Sweetened Lime Juice
- 1 1/2 ounce of Guava Nectar
Steps:
Rim about 3/4 of the glass with sugar. This represents the top of the volcano. Of course you’ll want to rim the glass with sugar before you put the rest of the ingredients in.
Mix ll of the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake. Pour into glass. Drink. Repeat.

Dear Jennifer and Dan, thanks so much for the fun show each week. I have something that may be right up your alley. Seaplane tours. Do you have any experience with seaplane tours of Oahu? I know there are many companies that feature helicopter tours, but my girlfriend has a fear of helicopters. Believe it or not, she said we could do a seaplane tour. And advice and budget ideas welcome.

MOLOKINI CRATER DIVECelina from Bothel wrote in...
Dear Dan and Jennifer. I am addicted to your show. I wanted to share an activity my fiance and I did last week. We just came from from a ten day trip to Maui. One of the days we did a crater dive of the Molokini crater. It was unreal! Have you ever done this?
- Just a little over two miles off Maui’s southern coast.
- An extinct volcano.
- Awesome snorkeling since the crater shields the ecosystem from rough water.
- Clear visibility.
- More than 250 species of fish live there.
- Since it is a protected marine and bird reserve, you must use a registered tour company to get there.
- Here are some recommended companies Four Winds II is a good one.
- The water is said to be clearer and calmer in the morning.
- Experience might depend on weather and conditions- from poor visibility to not being able to get in the water- so be warned!

Bonnie wrote in...
I just discovered and love listening to your Hawaiian podcasts.
My husband and I will be celebrating our 31st wedding anniversary with a Hawaiian Island Hopping Cruise.
I was hoping you can recommend a “not to miss” highlight at each location. We will have a rental car:
Hilo
Kona
Maui – Kahului
Kauai
There are two overnights, and we will rent a car one day – hoping you can recommend a beach where we can chill and snorkel on the other days. (We will have our own gear)
Overnight:
Maui – Kahului
Kauai
2 extra days in Honolulu (no car)
Hilton Alana Waikiki Hotel
Thanks so much
Bonnie
Our “must sees” for:
Hilo
- Richardson Beach Park. Sheltered from heavy surf, this is a great snorkeling black sand beach with lots of turtles. Black sand beach.
- Hilo Farmers Market. Open every day of the week Awesome venue right in downtown Hilo with local food, art, and crafts.
Kona
- Alii Drive. There are many famous sights to see as you make your way down from one end of the Drive to the other (make sure to stop and enjoy a nice dinner on the drive as you watch the sun set into the ocean)
Maui – Kahului (overnight)
- Io Valley State Park. The Io Needle and a hike through the park is an absolute must for Kahului.
- Hookipa Paka right near Kahului is a wonderful place to chill and take in the surf/watch windsurfers. A snack at Paea is also ideal after a nice day on the beach.
Kuai (overnight)
- Tunnels Beach is probably the best spot for snorkeling.
- Dan recommends checking out, Kilauea Lighthouse, also on the north end of the island.
- And, we couldn’t help this, but take a walk on the beach and see Hanalei by moonlight
Honolulu/Waikiki
- Diamond Head hike and Waikiki Beach. For only two days and no car, we recommend enjoying Waikiki and Diamond Head, both are not to be missed on Oahu. They are iconic for a reason!
600 Imiloa Pl
Hilo, HI 96720
(808) 969-9700
A unique place where Hawaiian culture, history and astronomy collide. This place is great for everyone. Imiloa features exhibits on the Hawaiian creation myths, historical explorations, a Planetarium, and a Native Garden. Definitely a great introduction to Hawaii and will give you a deeper appreciation for the place.
