We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode thirty-seven is Oregon. The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America. Here's our list for Pennsylvania: 1. Three Rivers Heritage Trail: The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a multi‐use riverfront trail system in the Pittsburgh region. This 24‐mile nonlinear trail has segments on both banks of Pittsburgh’s three rivers with access to city neighborhoods, business districts, and local attractions. You can even take it onto the Great Allegheny Trail which will take you all the way to Washington, D.C.! 2. Ohiopyle State Park: White-water (and any water) enthusiasts adore Ohiopyle, because thanks to the Youghiogheny River, it has the best rafting in the eastern United States and is scattered with impressive waterfalls and challenging hiking trails. The rapid flow of the river has also swept some unique plants into the park, which means botanists can find unusual surprises all through the Ferncliff Peninsula, which was named a National Natural Landmark in the 1970s. 3. Take a trip to Philadelphia which is rich with history: on display at the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed) and other American Revolutionary sites. 4. Maybe this time you should actually go visit Gettysburg?! 5. Backpacking the Poconos: Thunder Swamp Trail - A 30 mile loop trail with 15 miles of side trails and is located in Delaware State Forest. A scenic woodland trail that ranges from easy to moderate. Pinchot Trail - A 23 mile loop trail in the Pinchot State Forest. A scenic hike with some challenging sections 6. Pine Creek Rail Trail in the PA Grand Canyon. Part of the Tioga State Forest & located near Wellsboro PA you can bike, hike, raft, wagon ride, and wine your way through this region! Haystack Rocks on the Oregon Coast. 2. Skiing in Bend Oregon and Mt Hood Region 3. Hike the PCT Trail 4. Columbia River Gorge: This canyon of the Columbia River stretches over 80 miles and forms the boundary between Oregon and Washington. The amount of precipitation and wide range of elevation creates a diverse ecosystem with a ton of different plant and animal species. Some of the best hikes to countless waterfalls are found in the Gorge. And waterfalls!! 5. Trilium Lake: You can kayak on the calm waters and sunsets at Trillium definitely won’t disappoint. With Mt. Hood reflecting on the water, it sets the perfect scene and is one of the most photogenic lakes in Oregon. 6. Hood to Coast Relay: HTC is also known as the "Mother Of All Relays" and is the world's largest relay race with 12,000 runners and 3,500 volunteers! The race starts atop Mt. Hood and runs 197 miles to the Pacific Ocean in Seaside, Oregon. The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America. Here's our list for Oklahoma: 1. Rock-hop your way from one boulder to another along Charon’s Garden Trail, located within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in scenic southwest Oklahoma. This tucked-away trail offers intermediate to advanced hikers interesting geographic features such as unique rock formations, winding creeks and gorges. Wind along this 2.4 mile path for hiking and boulder hopping amidst huge granite boulders for a heart-pumping good time and sweeping valley views. 2. What better reward for a strenuous hike than to look out over a breathtaking landscape as it unfolds below? Hike to the highest point in the state at Black Mesa State Park & Nature Preserve and view where the Rocky Mountains meet shortgrass prairie from 4,973 feet above sea level. Allow time for the 16-mile round trip hike, which features distinct elevation changes and stunning views, and make sure to bring plenty of water. 3. Those who tire of exploring the natural world on dry land can dip into the exciting waters of Lake Tenkiller to find a whole new place to discover. Dive 80-feet under the lake’s crystal clear water to find rocky cliffs, as well as sunken planes, boats and vehicles. Access to the diving area can be found at Fisherman’s Point within Tenkiller State Park. 4. Explore the Lower Fork River Beaver’s Bend State Park: The Lower Mountain Fork River runs through the south end of Beaver’s Bend State Park located near the beautiful Broken Bow Lake. The winding river flows under towering cliffs and near gorgeous cypress trees. Beaver’s Bend also puts on a spectacular fall foliage show during the first few weeks of November. There are so many different adventures for visitors here like hiking, camping, canoeing, or trout fishing, so there’s an option for everyone! 5. Visit Robber’s Cave State Park: In the scenic, hilly woodlands of the Sans Bois Mountains of southeast Oklahoma, Robbers Cave State Park is a favorite of rappellers, equestrians, hikers and outdoor lovers. The park and adjoining wildlife management area offer acres of discovery and enjoyment including seasonal trout fishing and hunting, miles of hiking and equestrian trails, rugged cliffs for climbing and stunning fall foliage viewing. Once a former hideout for outlaws Jesse James and Belle Starr, Robbers Cave State Park is an 8,246-acre park with 189 combined lake acres with Lake Carlton, Lake Wayne Wallace and Coon Creek. It is named for the famous outlaw cave hidden in the formation of 300 to 1,500-ft sandstone hills and cliffs. 6. Visit the Shattuck Windmill Museum: More than 50 windmills, as well as a wind generator, cluster on the outdoor museum’s four acres, from the towering 18-foot Samson to the petite five-foot-tall Star Zephyr. They date from the 1850s to 1950s and range from those built entirely from wood to those of steel. Ride in GOBA, TOSRV, or run the Columbus Marathon, Flying Pig, or the Buck Fifty! Too many cool race options to single one out! 2. Rails to Trails the only trail made for runners, bikers, and horse carriages in Amish Country. 3. John Bryan State Park. (Don’t forget to stop at Yellow Springs Brewery and try and spot Dave Chapelle!) 4. Take a bike ride on the Hock Hocking Adena Bike Trail! Hockhocking,” which means “bottleneck” or “twisted,” was the native Shawnee name for the Hocking River; “Adena” reflects the history of the Adena Indians who lived in the Hocking Valley more than 2,000 years ago. Start off in Athens, near OU for a 21-mile ride up to Nelsonville! You can stop at a few breweries along the way, both Jackie’Os and Little Fish are along the path. 5. Take an overnight backpacking trip in Wayne National Forest: Wildcat Hollow is an easy 17-mile trip that can be done in 2 days; they also have a 5-mile loop for day hikes. Further south near Ironton is the Lake Vesuvius 16-mile backpacking trail. 6. How can we talk about Ohio and NOT talk about Hocking Hills!? This is the most visited state park and it has tons of hiking, lake opportunities, and cabins and camping galore in the area. Explore Theodore Roosevelt National Park. 2. Adventure through small towns/cities like Fargo and Medora to connect with the locals. 3. Set a PR at the Fargo Half Marathon, one of the flattest road runs in the country! 4. Visit the Lewis and Clark State Park, which is home to the largest native mixed-grass prairie of any North Dakota State Park. 5. Maah Daah Hey Trail: The 98-mile main trail connects the southern and northern units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, running through rolling prairie and rocky badlands-home to mule deer, coyotes, golden eagles, bighorn sheep and bison. Loop trails and a new southern extension add another 80 miles to the trail system. 6. Visit the International Peace Garden: Trails and lush gardens along the U.S.-Canada border celebrate peace between the two nations. The 2,300-acre garden is half in the U.S. and half in Canada, about 110 miles northeast of Minot. In summer, the International Peace Garden gets big splashes of color from perennials and annuals. Hiking and exploring Boone, North Carolina. The “new” Asheville. 2. Drive and road trip thru the Blue Ridge Mountains/Blue Ridge Parkway. 3. Camping on Bear Island or one of the several scenic islands in the Outer Banks like Ocracoke and Hatteras 4. Go mountain biking in the Pisgah National Forest. It hosts 510,000 amazing acres in the Appalachian Mountains. It’s a prime place to enjoy a number of outdoor activities, particularly mountain biking. The trails most popular among bikers are the Mills River, Bent Creek, and Davidson River trailheads. There are many more trails in the area that are suitable for bikers of all experience levels, from easiest to most difficult. 5. Paddle the Great Dismal Swamp in South Mills, NC in the northern portion of the state. This is a wetland forest where you can rent a kayak for the day and is perfect for a fall day (leaf peepers!) 6. Chimney Rock State Park - spend the day rock climbing or hiking - great for the entire family and your furry friends! Letchworth State Park: The Grand Canyon of the East! The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs--as high as 600 feet in some places--surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. They also have a cool balloons over letchworth event in May. 2. Spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes. This region consists of 11 rough, long lakes in the central region of NY. Canandaigua Lake is near Rochester and includes a number of wineries to visit, kayaking on the lake and the New York Wine and Culinary School where you can take a cooking class (or two). 3. Visit the 1000 Islands - located on the border of NY and Canada (near Ontario), this region consists of a number of small towns where you can take boats or kayaks to single islands with castles, go wine tasting, see lighthouses, etc. “Waters that were once patrolled by pirates (yes ... pirates!) and Prohibition bootleggers are now cruised by cottagers”. 4. Hike Storm King Mountain on a moderate day hike to give you 360 degree views of the Hudson Valley. 5. Climb Outdoors at Dumbo’s Boulders in prep for a trip or to get in shape. It’s America’s largest outdoor rock climbing gym, located in Manhattan. 6. Backpack the 24 miles Devil’s Path in the Catskills Region that includes six mountain summits and is described as beautiful, painful, brutal, and strenuous by the Outbound Collective. Surrounded by protected wilderness, the town lies about 20 miles north of Taos and 12 miles west of the resort community of Red River. It’s also a gateway town to the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, a natural playground with two wild rivers, the Rio Grande and Red, and acres of stunning lands. 2. The International Hot Air Balloon Festival! (while you are in Albuquerque, check out the Los Poblanos Historic Lavender Farm and Inn. They have an excellent farm to table menu, store and lavender everywhere!) 3. Visit the newest National Park. White Sands. 4. Hike and explore Chaco Canyon and Historical Culture Region 5. Head to Tent Rocks National Monument 6. Hike the Hacklebarney Even on Indian summer days, the Black River Gorge in Hacklebarney State Park (Long Valley) is cool and refreshing, making it an ideal spot to see fall foliage. If you like to hike with your pooch, you'll be happy to know that leashed pets are welcome. 2. Climb Absecon's 228 steps Holding the distinction of the state's tallest lighthouse (at 171 feet), Absecon Lighthouse is one of Atlantic City's most popular attractions. Get a great workout and a fantastic view of AC's skyline with a hike to the top. Are you a lighthouse lover? Then take the annual Lighthouse Challenge, which is held in mid-October (this year, the event is October 15-16). Help preserve NJ's lighthouses while you see how many you can climb 3. Ride a wave In fall, the combination of cooler air temperatures, warm ocean waters and the swells that accompany the Atlantic's hurricane season create the prime time for surfing in New Jersey. No wonder the state boasts some of best surfing on the East Coast 4. Amy K is excited: There’s a rail to trail!!! 331 Miles of Rail-Trails in the state. We love them all take your pick depending on where you are. 5. Visit the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge: eight-mile unpaved Wildlife Drive that winds through a salt-marsh refuge of startling beauty. Along the way, the marvel of an ecosystem situated along the North Atlantic Flyway is revealed. Spring and fall migrations are especially breathtaking. Stop to watch shorebirds dive for fish and shellfish and meander along pathways and up observation towers. Watch for osprey on special nesting platforms. 6. Visit the Grounds For Sculpture: Art lovers (and nature lovers) won't want to miss this 42-acre museum and sculpture park in the town of Hamilton. Established in 1992 to facilitate the appreciation of contemporary sculpture, it has become one of the state's most popular art exhibits, boasting 270 large-scale works by Seward Johnson and other US artists. The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America. Here's our list for Rhode Island: 1. New England is the best place to see the foliage, especially in Rhode Island. Take a drive through the Blackstone Valley from Pawtucket to Smithfield and Woonsocket. Or down Route 1 in Westerly in the Southern Part of the State. If you prefer hiking, you could walk through the wooded areas of Roger Williams State Park in Providence or Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick. 2. Visit Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge and take a beach hike. The Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge Trail is a 2.4 mile trail is an easy seaside hike. 3. Visit Lincoln Woods State Park: Located just north of Providence, this state park provides hiking, horseback riding and swimming at a fresh water beach. 4. Ride the East Bay Bike Path: This 14.5 scenic paved bicycle trail runs from Providence to Bristol. The flat pathway makes for easy peddling and there are plenty of spots along the way to slow down and take in the incredible views. 5. Go seal watching! In North Kingston, spend an afternoon at the John H. Chafee Nature Preserve. A two-mile loop trail will take you out to Rome Point where from October to April you can chance upon seals hanging out on the rocks. The rest of the year, the trail is an enjoyable hike with lots of scenery. 6. Fort Wetherill. Check out the ruins of this abandoned military fort in Jamestown. Fort Wetherill is a 61-acre recreation area that also offers kayaking, scuba diving, swimming at the beach, or just random exploring.
