Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
Happily Ever Aftermath
08/14/19 • 69 min
We hit teenage Polina years as we discuss her pick Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). She shares that this was a view of the adult life she wanted at the time. Diana had to reconcile Michael Caine in a romantic context.

Polina references Emily Nussbaum’s interview on Fresh Air and her book I Like to Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution, and her essay Confessionals of a Human Shield, available in her book.

America's Sweethearts (2001)
Happily Ever Aftermath
02/27/19 • 73 min
Stretch your quads, we're back on a Cusack run and discussing Diana's pick America's Sweethearts (2001). This is Polina's first time watching and she explains the first fifteen minutes set up a satire that the rest of the movie did not pay off. Due to her habit of fast forwarding, Diana has memories of a more emotionally stable version of John Cusack's Eddie.
A movie publicist deals with the messy public split of his movie's co-stars while keeping reporters at bay while a reclusive director holds the film's print hostage. Stars Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Billy Crystal, Hank Azaria, Stanley Tucci, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin, Seth Green, Larry King, Rainn Wilson, Eric Balfour, and Ann Cusack. It Could Happen to You (1994)
Happily Ever Aftermath
02/13/19 • 59 min
We discuss Diana's pick It Could Happen to You (1994). Young Diana was more interested in the lottery spending montages than the budding romance. This is Polina's first time watching the movie and naturally she noticed Nicolas Cage's uncharacteristically subdued performance.
A police officer promises to share his lottery ticket with a waitress in lieu of a tip. Stars Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, Rosie Perez, Wendell Pierce, Isaac Hayes, Seymour Cassel, Stanley Tucci, Red Buttons, Richard Jenkins, plus Vincent Pastore as Bowling Team Member #1 and Emily Deschanel as Paint Throwing Fur-Activist. Like Water for Chocolate (1992)
Happily Ever Aftermath
01/16/19 • 74 min
Polina's pick (original title: Como Agua Para Chocolate) ignites a fiery passion, terrible attempts at the Spanish language, and an explanation of magical realism. In addition to the film spoiling our “what happens after the movie” game, Diana was disappointed about the ending she was forced to accept. Despite that, both agreed the film was very enjoyable and could not stop praising the film's highlight: middle sister Gertrudis.
The youngest daughter in her family, the beautiful Tita (Lumi Cavazos) is forbidden to marry her true love, Pedro (Marco Leonardi). Since tradition dictates that Tita must care for her mother, Pedro weds her older sister, Rosaura (Yareli Arizmendi), though he still loves Tita. The situation creates much tension in the family, and Tita's powerful emotions begin to surface in fantastical ways through her cooking. As the years pass, unusual circumstances test the enduring love of Pedro and Tita. Also stars Regina Torné, Mario Iván Martínez, Ada Carrasco, Yareli Arizmendi, Claudette Maillé, Pilar Aranda, Farnesio de Bernal, Joaquín Garrido, Rodolfo Arias, Margarita Isabel, Sandra Arau, and Andrés García Jr. (from Google.com & Wikipedia.org)

I.Q. (1994)
Happily Ever Aftermath
12/19/18 • 60 min
Diana's pick I.Q. (1994) hits all of the points on the romantic comedy cliché checklist like a well researched physics thesis. This is Polina's first time watching, but recognized so much of Princeton portrayed from when she grew up there. Fun fact: the movie theater in the film is the same one young Polina saw A Room with a View (episode 10).
A mechanic romances the mathematician niece of physicist Albert Einstein, with help from Einstein and his friends. Stars Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan, Walter Matthau, Lou Jacobi, Gene Saks, Joseph Maher, Stephen Fry, Tony Shalhoub, Frank Whaley, Charles Durning, and Keene Curtis. (from IMDb.com)
The book Polina mentioned is The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert: https://www.elizabethgilbert.com/books/the-signature-of-all-things/

Roxanne (1987)
Happily Ever Aftermath
12/05/18 • 68 min
Polina counters Diana's Steve Martin movie from last episode with her pick Roxanne (1987). By the end, you will thoroughly know how she feels about Daryl Hannah's curly hair. Diana sings The Police within the first minute of the show.
In this modern take on Edmond Rostand's classic play "Cyrano de Bergerac," C. D. Bales (Steve Martin) is the witty, intelligent and brave fire chief of a small Pacific Northwest town who, due to the size of his enormous nose, declines to pursue the girl of his dreams, lovely Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah). Instead, when his shy underling Chris McConnell (Rick Rossovich) becomes smitten with Roxanne, Bales feeds the handsome young man the words of love to win her heart. Also stars Shelley Duvall, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Max Alexander, Michael J. Pollard, Steve Mittleman, Damon Wayans, Matt Lattanzi, Shandra Beri, Jean Sincere, Thom Curley, Ritch Shydner, and Kevin Nealon. (from Fandango.com and Wikipedia.org)
The "alien abduction" scene that tickled Polina:

Operation Christmas Drop (2020) & guest Jasmine
Happily Ever Aftermath
11/25/20 • 45 min
Diana welcomes blogger Jasmine to help her with the Netflix release Operation Christmas Drop (2020). Using Jasmine's experience living on Guam and channeling her own heritage from her mom's side, Diana tries to point a spotlight on the tiny island getting the rom-com treatment. And the non-Chamorros kind of falling in love there.
Check out Jasmine's blog Jasmine Ad Nauseam for her takes on thrifting, frugal fashion, beauty, and life.
The band in the movie (and some of Jasmine's former high school classmates) is The Dolls. Their music is available on SoundCloud.
