play

04/21/22 • 27 min

Nick Biemiller is back in the 2nd episode of this series to break down as many of the terms and players involved in the RGS process. No matter who you are, its a bit much when trying to get involved and figure out how everything is supposed to work. Between all of the people, NGOs (non governmental organizations), government agencies, and all of the alphabet soup acronyms any army soldier could ever possibly want. This episode is our attempt to try and put a simple breakdown of all the players involved in one location. Next month's episode we will be jumping into more detailed topics and conversation!

If you have any questions you would like covered in this series then please reach out and let us know!

Gun Dog It Yourself - 268. Navigating TPLO Surgery

268. Navigating TPLO Surgery

Gun Dog It Yourself

play

06/11/24 • 77 min

It's something we all hope never happens to our dogs but, unfortunately, a CCL injury (equivalent to a human ACL) is more common than what you may think. When Cliff Hawkins' 3 year old Pudelpointer, Ruby, went down with the injury, he found the available information on how to navigate the situation very lacking. So he documented his experience and wrote the Navigating TPLO Surgery Article that can hopefully help others make their way through the process with as little setbacks as possible!

  • The actual injury and getting back to the truck
  • The surgical options for a CCL injury
  • Confinement begins! Getting to the actual surgery
  • The odds of the 2nd leg getting injured and was it considered while operating on the first?
  • The cost of the surgeries
  • The process and tips for picking up from the vet
  • The sling/towel used for support while moving
  • The containment space. Design, tips, and considerations
  • Icing and PEMF (Pulse Electromagnetic Fields)
  • The daily attention and supervision required
  • Confinement is finally lifted with limited freedom and walks
  • Cleared for full activity! Until....the 2nd leg....
  • The second surgery's "complications"
  • Lessons learned and considerations moving forward
  • Using Librela for the underlying lameness and arthritis
  • K9 Athlete New Dog and Dasuquin supplements

For further questions, you can reach Cliff Hawkins at [email protected].

Gun Dog It Yourself - Recall | Ep. 101 Tracking Principles
play

04/18/24 • 89 min

There have been countless guests and topics covered in episodes throughout the years that are truly invaluable and worth revisiting. Going through some of the back catalog and re-listening to some of the older episodes, I was honestly surprised at some of the information and details I have forgotten myself over the years. I wanted to try and highlight some of these guests and topics so I am going through and scrubbing some of the episodes and "remastering" them. Im cutting out any of the fluff such as the intros or outros so you hear just the meat and potatoes of these conversations. This should allow you to revisit these older episodes without having to sit through anything that happens to no longer be timely or applicable to the topic.

I'm revisiting Ep. 101 Tracking Principles which was originally released on 7/12/21. Jay Crafter of Invictus K9 and Grayson Guyer of Lost Highway Kennels joined me after a tracking clinic they put on to discuss the principles and foundations of a quality tracking dog. It goes beyond just tracking blood! This subject also transcends just training a tracking dog as theres a ton of information in this one in regards to building drive and desire in any type of dog! This is 100% applicable to our bird dogs!

  • Foundations of tracking
  • Selecting your new tracking dog
  • The lowest value reinforcer for the greatest change of behavior
  • Figuring out your dog's drive!
  • Restraint to create value in the reward by manipulating back pressure
  • Tracking vs air scenting
  • How to release the dog for a confident start
  • Changes of behavior (COB) and rewarding the momentum
  • Training in low odor makes tracking blood easy!
  • Making the track harder with age and accessory odors
  • Tracking is tracking regardless of surfaces
  • Running parallel rather than right on top
  • Actually setup for distractions!
  • Versatility is always a sacrifice
  • Principles, routines, and trusting the dog!

Gun Dog It Yourself - 244. Western Hunting w/ Flushers & Pointers
play

02/13/24 • 76 min

Hunting with a pointer/flusher combination seems like a match made in heaven! Guest, Steve Smith, initially thought the same thing. However, like everything in this gun dog world, context is king. After attempting it Steve realized that perhaps the combo wasn't as deadly as he was hoping. At least not in the environment and type of hunting he does.

  • Late season hunting out west
  • Is the pointer/flusher combo always ideal?
  • Sight vs scent pointing scenarios
  • Running bird challenges and theories
  • Characteristics of the legacy trainers
