Ever wondered what it takes to be a modern day session musician? Gone are the days of driving from studio to studio, taking calls from the hot producers and working with artists to give them your sound. Now is the age of remote recording, dropboxing your stems and getting ideas down over Zoom calls, and the competition is high!
This week we speak to Rory Harvey, who is making a real name for himself as a session guitarist and bassist in the new remote session scene, but his talents don't end there. Performing, singing, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer are also titles that exist on his résumé. Rory gives us an insight into his working life, how he has got there and where he intends to go, with some fun stories along the way.

Are Signature Guitars Worth the Money? - Guitar Smarts #28

Love Guitar Smarts and want to get in touch with us? Send us a Text HERE!

For quite a few decades now, many guitar manufacturers have honoured some of their more famous users with signature instruments. Arguably the oldest signature instrument is the Gibson Les Paul, which has evolved into a whole range of guitars. For some guitarists, a signature guitar is a representation of what they prefer in a standard instrument and for some, it is more of a custom designed tool, made to give them the functionality they need.

Are they a marketing tool or a cash cow for the manufacturers or do they represent a genuine option on the path to sonic freedom for the average joe guitarist? Which signature guitars do we rate as bonafide usable guitars, and which signature guitars offer little in value to the buyer?

Finally, for those players who cannot stretch to buy their favourite guitarist’s instruments, what alternatives are there that provide a suitable and comparative option?

Recently we spoke about getting ourselves prepared for gigging on a technical level, maintaining our instruments and getting our equipment ready for the rigours of gigging and rehearsing. But what do we need to consider when it comes to being a member of a band and ensuring that we are pulling in the right direction? How do we be a good band member, what do we need to do on a personal level to help ensure success as a band and what are the DO’S and DON’TS.
