Episode 17 Guerrillapreneur: the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare - Giant Slaying: 12 Steps For Building A Cult Brand.
This is our third Giant Slaying episode! In these episodes, I discuss strategies and tactics that can help Guerrillapreneurs defeat the corporate giants. In this episode, I am going to discuss the 12 Steps for Building A Cult Brand.
Cult branding tactics can help Guerrillapreneurs build a fanatical customer base that corporate giants can not easy capture because the individuals are emotionally invested in the core values of the cult brand. According to Interbrand's Best Global Brands 2016 rankings, "Apple, Google, and Coca-Cola have the world's most valuable brands at $178B, $133B and $73B respectively." How can startups compete with titans that spend more on social media in a day than your startup spends on sushi in a year? Guerrillapreneurs can use cult branding tactics to build a fanatical following at a fraction of the cost its takes corporate giants to attract the attention of that same audience.
Check out this episode and learn the 12 steps for building a cult brand. I hope it helps you. In Episode 13 of the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare podcast, we bring you up to speed with Guerrillapreneur News, news about the sharing, gig and circular loop economies that is expected to grow to $335B by 2025.
First, we discuss the Ford/Lyft partnership around self-driving cars. Juniper Research released the Sharing Economy: Opportunities, Impacts & Disrupter 2017-2022 report that forecasts that the number of ride sharing drivers will increase from an estimated 4.3 million in 2017, to 8.6 million by 2022. Given this forecast, it makes sense for Ford to seek a partner that can help them convert their manufacturing business into a "revenue by the ride" services company. Second, WeWork teams up with IBM to manage an entire office for the tech giant. This arrangement marks a shift in WeWork's strategy. Given it's technical infrastructure, I discuss how I believe WeWork will eventually become a full service talent management business. Third, I explain how the Ikea/Task Rabbit merger is a sign that more mainstream companies are going to buy their way into the Sharing Economy. Expect players like McDonalds to purchase delivery companies like Deliveroo. Fourth, I discuss some of the headwinds that might slow the Sharing Economy. Uber lost its license to operate in London because the the Transport for London (TFL) was concerned that Uber was not carrying out appropriate background checks on drivers or reporting serious criminal offenses when they occur with their drivers. Given this action, I speculate about the future of background checks and how ride-sharing services will operate in the future. Fifth, First Data launches a new instant "Disburse-to-Debit Card" service which enables instant payments for gig workers. This innovative solution will eventually disrupt traditional banking relationships. Sixth, Airbnb is facing a headwind in Akron, Ohio where the City Council prohibited a man in an upscale neighborhood from placing his house on the home-sharing platform. The homeowner has never had an issue with any of his guests, but his neighbors successfully argued that the activity could adversely impact their property values. Seventh, two new camping startups are taking on Airbnb. Tentrr and Hipcamp have platforms that help individuals locate and book campsites that they setup for the landowners. Eighth, I give you an update on the Chinese startup, E-Umbrella. The umbrella sharing service has lost all 300,000 of their umbrellas. Customers used their smartphones to obtain the umbrellas, but their failed to return them. I provide a few ideas on how to save the business. Finally, I ask the question, "What will you own in the future as the Sharing Economy are bigger part of the US GDP?" The answer might surprise you.

In Episode 16 of the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare podcast, we bring you up to speed with Guerrillapreneur News, news about the sharing, gig and circular loop economies that is expected to grow to $335B by 2025.
First, we discuss WeWork's purchase of Meetup. How does this acquisition change WeWork's strategy? Can WeWork integrate Meetup and produce enhanced capabilities that will help them drive train and staff virtual workers? Second, Airbnb tests split payments which allow users to group source an Airbnb stay. According to Airbnb 38% of people who travel in a group experience a loss associated with individual who do not refund their friends at the end of the trip. 18% of this group experiences losses as great as $10,000. Split payments could signal a significant shift in Airbnb's business. I speculate that Airbnb could use blockchain to launch a real estate business where gig workers can purchase a portion of a house (bedroom) and access to the public spaces and trade those contracts to other gig workers. Third, we examine Carmine, a car sharing service that launched in Morocco. Carmine issues a safety score to its drivers as gives the most opportunities to the safest drivers. Can Carmine disrupt the market? Is this value proposition transferrable to other markets? Fourth, ECrent has created a Gig Economy supermarket. Are consumers ready for "one-stop-shopping" of their gig services? Fifth, UGottaEat, a competitor to the Chinese communal kitchen startup, HomeCook, has launched in Cleveland, Ohio. UGottaEat helps chefs and cooks build a social network to which they can sell their home cooked meals. Can this strategy scale while also escaping the regulatory issues? Six, Sun Exchange uses blockchain to crowd sale solar panels to create a solar energy cooperative in rural Africa. Investors buy individual solar cells and Sun Exchange leases the solar panels to school and local businesses. Investors are paid in local currency or Bit-Coin. Seventh, Southeast Asian startup GoJek has launched a motorbike ride hailing service that lets users immediately start delivering packages after they rent the motorbikes. Users can build up credits for performing these services and use the credits to pay their utility bills. Finally, we discuss the use of facial recognition locks in China and their use in the home sharing market. In China, hotels and home sharing services are required to confirm a guest's identity before they can check-in. Xiaozhu, a Chinese home sharing startup, has partnered with Ant Financial, to integrate facial recognition door locks as a way to meet the government identity verification requirement. The Chinese security requirement has create a gig economy standard that is now driving innovation in other markets.

In this episode, I interview Paul Rosenberg, the author of Rogue Leadership: Harnessing Headwinds to Drive Performance. Paul Rosenberg challenges many current myths and memes circulating in the corporate world. With both humor and rare insight, he has written an easy-to-read volume that shows how "rogue leaders" go against the norm to achieve unconventional success. Elements of effective rogue leadership include:
1) Bringing play back into business to release stress, create bonds, and inspire creativity and innovation.
20 Using a laser-sharp focus on right action to amplify organizational values.
3) Embracing "partner leadership" that benefits both frontline workers and bottom-line profits.
4) Employing "stealth change management" to avoid burn out and to create sustained change.
5) Learning the art of "organizational triage" maximizes resources and avoids wasted energy, time, and creativity.

In Episode 6 of the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare podcast, we bring you up to speed with Guerrillapreneur news, news about the sharing, gig and circular loop economies: The Chinese Sharing Economy is growing at 40% driven by sharing economy startups like MoBike, MoBark and Home Cook. MoBike is a station-less bike sharing service that leverages smart lock technology. MoBark is an innovative "Pet-Sharing" startup and Home Cook crowdsources food preparation from home cooks who offer their dinner to lonely white collar workers. According to China Daily, the Sharing Economy will make up 20% of China's GDP by 2020. Airbnb plans to offer bundled entertainment and lodgings in an attempt to grow their top line. London-based Fat Lama received $1M in seed funding to launch its service that lets individuals share everything from toys-to-tools. Miami, Florida-based Cargo4 is helping shipping companies sell the free space in trucks after they have dropped off their deliveries.
Business Founders need to listen to this episode if you think you are an entrepreneur because you might not be one. In Episode 6, I review the 4 stages of a Founder's job transition, which includes a Frontline Worker, Frontline Manager, Executive Manager and finally an Entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs spend a majority of their time planning and executing strategies that will impact their business' growth 12-24 months from today. If you don't have the time or the capacity for this level of planning, you are not an entrepreneur. In the episode, I provide a framework (Founder's Growth Capacity Framework) to help Founders escalate a their evolution from Frontline Worker to Entrepreneur.
