We Grew From Wanting More to Feeling Enough
04/22/21 • 21 min
“Most of life is choosing what you already chose.... Our lives are stories of recommitment. ~David Brooks
Kevin and I come full circle in this episode. We are recommiting to our dream life. Our lives will be a balance between a satisfaction with who we are now, and an openness towards who we could become. We are focused on making the ordinary feel extraordinary. Our lives are about staying true to what we have already chosen, and exploring the expansive world our focus now allows us to see. Plus, we continue to re-establish intimacy between the newest versions of ourselves.
*Editors note: After numerous listens it was determined that Kevin was in fact correct in his early assessment @ 3:10. Mary was possibly a tad defensive in the moment. #youwereright

- Read + Watch: What is "Wu Wei" that Mary mentions?

Count The Kicks Total is In!
As a recap (in case this is your first episode, hello there!):
Kevin and I have been tracking our downloads since March 11th, 2021. At the end of 30 days, we made a $1/download donation to Count The Kicks in honor of our good friends' son, JP. Count The Kicks is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering and educating mothers to track their baby's movements while still in the womb. Tracking baby's movements for 30 minutes every day can alert you to changes which may be a sign something is going wrong with your baby. Count The Kicks then urges women to take those concerns to their healthcare professional.
Kevin and I chose to donate to this nonprofit after interviewing Kelli and Pat in episode 15, Growing Through Grief. Kelli and Pat courageously share their story of life after infant loss and they hope it is a resource to others struggling with grief. Thank you Kelli and Pat for allowing us to show up for JP in this way. It was our honor.
And now, our total is in and it’s big! pssst We had an anonymous donor!

Hearing THIS Would Have Been Helpful 3 Years Ago
A few months ago, Kevin read Adam Grant's latest book Think Again, and loved it. On Kevin's suggestion, I went searching for Adam on my favorite media, podcasts. I was in luck! I found his podcast by TED called Work Life, and downloaded an old episode from May 2019 called The Perils of Following Your Career Passion. Needless to say, I was very intrigued. I knew from Kevin that Adam has a contrarian perspective, but I had never heard someone say to NOT follow your passion. Of course I had to listen. After 3 years of searching, worrying and dreaming, I have found my own understanding of what it means to have "work life balance" or a "dream job". Kevin has figured out his magic formula over the past 3 years as well. We both agree with Adam's take on why your dream job should not be solely based on feeling passionate every day. Kevin and I know that our dream jobs are tools to allow for a life where we can follow our curiosity; free from the notion that they have to make us money. Listen along with us and see what you think about Adam's unique perspective.
