Revolutionary Beer in Morristown
Greetings From the Garden State
01/24/22 • 43 min
5.0
Morristown, NJ is a town rich in history. It was the winter encampment of General George Washington and his troops, as well as the home of notable figures in history such as Thomas Nast. Glenbrook Brewery pays homage to Morristown's history the only way they know how, with beer! Each craft beer produced by their award winning Head Brewer is carefully brewed with the finest ingredients and artisan craftsmanship.
Segment 1
We learn about the background of how Heath Traver and Darren Cregan came up with the idea of Glenbrook Brewery. It all started with a one gallon home brew kit and has turned into the first brewery in Morristown. We also learned the process of how they brew the beer, especially on this large of a scale compared to a home brew kit.
Today in New Jersey History: The Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company, based in Newark, became the first brewery to produce their beer, Krueger Beer, in a can on January 24, 1935.
Segment 2
Heath & Darren talk about the offerings Glenbrook has and some of the fan favorites. The brewery idea started with an award-winning pumpkin beer, but it's Colonial Ale, Morristown Ale, Kolsch, and more have all become staples! All of these beers picked up awards at the Brewski Awards. They also each have tie in names to not only Morristown, but connections throughout history. They also hint at some future offerings and ideas they have for the brewery.
New Jersey Fun Fact: The Lambert Castle Museum in Paterson has a spoon exhibit with over 5,400 spoons from every state and almost every country in the world.
Segment 3
Glenbrook Brewery is extremely active in the community. Supporting local restaurants and bringing in their food, education foundations, and toy drives is important to Heath & Darren. They do a lot of events like trivia, live music, and more to make it a family-friendly atmosphere. The team at Glenbrook Brewery is incredible, from their GM Conor to their servers, everyone makes you feel welcome and happy to be there.

Comic Book Men's Ming Chen
Greetings From the Garden State
02/28/23 • 50 min
5.0
Ming Chen entered the world of podcasting in 2007 as one of the architects behind Kevin Smith's SModCast Network. His first responsibilities included all technical aspects of the network as well as the design, maintenance and marketing of SModCast's online presence. As the network grew and more shows were added, Ming was asked to create and co-host podcasts of his own including the award winning "I Sell Comics," "The SModCo SMorning Show" and "The Secret Stash: The Official Comic Book Men Companion Podcast." He can also be heard as an occasional guest on the massively popular "Tell 'em Steve Dave" podcast.
In 2011 Ming became a cast member of the hit AMC TV unscripted show "Comic Book Men" along with A Shared Universe co-founder Michael Zapcic. Based out of Kevin Smith's comic book store "Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash" in Red Bank, NJ, this show focuses on amazing comics and vintage toys and the stories behind them. It is the first TV show to use podcasting as part of its narrative.
Based on the popularity of the show, Ming became a frequent featured guest at numerous comic book conventions around the world. These conventions include the New York Comic Con, Comicpalooza in Houston, Walker Stalker Con, Heroes and Villains FanFest, Edinburgh Comic Con, Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, C2E2 in Chicago and more. It was at these conventions that listeners of Ming's podcasts began approaching him for advice on starting their own shows. These interactions became the genesis behind A Shared Universe PodcaStudio.
In 2017 Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic decided to open A Shared Universe in Eatontown, NJ in an effort to help aspiring podcasters start their own shows and to help experienced podcasters become even better. Their goal is to create an amazing environment where all podcasters can create, collaborate, record and be inspired by this amazing new medium.

Calandra's Bakery and Restaurants with Thomas Calandra
Greetings From the Garden State
10/18/21 • 50 min
5.0
Mike Ham travels to Calandra's Italian Village in Caldwell, NJ to visit with Thomas Calandra, part of the third-generation of the Calandra family that began baking bread in a small shop in Newark in 1962. The two discuss the history of the business, the family's activity in the community, and more.
About Calandra's Bakery and Restaurants
Luciano Calandra, an Italian immigrant, had been in America for just five years when he went into business for himself and opened a small Italian and French bakery. Mr. Calandra and his wife Ortenza worked hard day and night, and their bakery quickly developed a reputation for producing delicious bread. The business took off and soon after Mr. and Mrs. Calandra’s two sons, Anthony and Luciano Jr., began working in the family business. Not only did Mr. Calandra teach his sons the inner workings of the bakery, but he also instilled in them his business principles: a strong work ethic, an emphasis on family, and a belief that the customer is always right.
Over 50 years later, Mr. Calandra’s philosophy remains the guiding light for the family business. Today, Calandra’s Bakery in Newark is a 50,000 square foot operation and the family now has two additional bakeries, one in Fairfield and one in Caldwell. The three bakeries deliver their products to more than 500 supermarkets, delis, and restaurants in the tri-state area. In addition to their bakeries, the Calandra family now owns and operates several hotels, restaurants, and apartment buildings in northern New Jersey. The family also produces and sells their own line of olive oil, coffee, fresh pasta, homemade sauces, and wines from their vineyard in Italy.
Although the family’s business has grown substantially since 1962, two things remain unchanged: Calandra’s Bakery is still synonymous with delicious bread, and the family remains driven by hard work, traditional family values, and a focus on customer service.

Hailing from Essex County, New Jersey, Young Benny is an up and coming artist with a penchant for writing infectious music and relatable narratives. Inspired by critically acclaimed artists like Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne, Young Benny took a plunge into pursuing music full-time about a year ago. Prior to starting his musical journey, Benny was a football player on the verge of making it to the NFL.
Young Benny is greatly inspired by real life experiences and hardships, including his older brother who suffers from autism. These personal experiences greatly influence his artistry and writing style. Fueled by the people who don’t believe in and a strong desire to support his family, Young Benny continues to push himself to achieve greater heights in music. His ability to write infectious music has not only garnered him a sizable fan base, but also a song with fellow New Jersey rapper, Tsu Surf.
Armed with big dreams and plenty of energy to spare, Young Benny seeks to positively influence the world and connect with like-minded individuals through his music. Young Benny is no doubt, well on his way to becoming one of the most phenomenal artists of this generation.

The Growing Stage - The Children's Theater of New Jersey with Stephen Fredericks
Greetings From the Garden State
11/08/21 • 43 min
Mike Ham travels to the Palace Theater in Netcong, NJ to talk with the Founder of The Growing Stage - The Children's Theater of New Jersey, Stephen Fredericks. Mike and Steve discuss the history of both The Growing Stage and the Palace Theater, educational programs the nonprofit provides, its connection to the community and more!
About The Growing Stage
The rich history of The Growing Stage is equally matched to its home, The Palace Theatre. It was founded by Executive Director Stephen L. Fredericks in 1982. The organization enjoyed its humble beginnings at the Black River Playhouse and the Williamson School in Chester, New Jersey.
Along with a small professional staff and dedicated corps of volunteers, Steve’s dream to bring professional theatre to children and their families grew. As the audience and our reputation for outstanding theatre grew, the company embarked on a journey to create the only performing arts center in the state dedicated solely to young people and their families.
The History of The Growing Stage is incomplete without The historic Palace Theatre. Built in 1919, it was a New Jersey entertainment landmark for over 50 years. Originally a silent movie and vaudeville house, it later featured talking movies, local plays and graduations, minstrel shows and other live entertainment.
In 1934, the Palace was leased by a prominent operator of theatres in Newark and the Oranges, and a period of major renovation began. The interior was stylishly redecorated in 1934, employing fabric wall covering and ceiling draperies. A marquee was added at the entrance, and the Colonial Revival façade was covered by an Art Deco-style front in 1938.
The Hopatcong Broadway Players, a summer troupe of nationally known actors, directors and writers who vacationed at Lake Hopatcong, were a featured attraction in the mid-1930s. Bert Lytell, Celeste Holm and Gale Sondergaard were among the actors who appeared on the Palace stage as the troupe tried out theatrical productions before taking them onto Broadway.
During the mid-1940s, the commercial storefronts in the Palace’s facade were removed, and the theatre served as a popular movie house until the 1960s. It then fell on hard times as competition from television and multiplex theatres led to a decline in attendance. In 1981, the venerable theatre was converted into a warehouse for a moving company, a purpose it served until 1994.
In May 1995, The Growing Stage purchased the Palace Theatre and began the process of restoring it to a regional center for the performing arts. Since then, we have raised and re-invested $3 million, and in September 2012, we celebrated the completion of our final major capital project, the restoration of the Palace’s front façade.
The Growing Stage is the only theatre-for-young-audiences company in the state of New Jersey that owns its own facility. The fully-restored Palace features a 240-seat theatre and balcony/art gallery graced with hand-painted murals by company artist-in-residence Perry Arthur Kroeger, a modern concession area, rehearsal space, classrooms and administrative offices.
