The project tells the stories of 30 South Dakotans living with mental illness, grief, or loss and demonstrates how storytelling is a critical part of suicide prevention. Host, Joel Kaskinen, chats with guests Benson Langat and Carter Gronseth about their experience running across the state of South Dakota to raise awareness of mental health with The 437 Project.

The 437 Project is a statewide run that is changing lives by raising funds for the Helpline Center's 988 Suicide Prevention and Crisis Line and raising awareness of mental health in even the smallest of communities in the state. Spanning from the Wyoming border to the Iowa border, this run is 437 miles long and is split up between 12 runners who are passionate about community building and mental health. Using the The CDC's seven strategies for preventing suicide found in their technical package for suicide prevention, to guide his work, Brad shares how increasing economic supports can be a protective factor against suicide. We get into the ways finances and economics can be both risk factors and protective factors for prevention, depending on the situation.

In episode 3, Joel sits down with Bridget Swier to talk about her work with the Front Porch Coalition. As a self proclaimed expert in shame and stigma, Bridget knows what self-hatred feels and looks like. She explains how she overcomes these feelings after years of abuse, substance use, foster care, inpatient care, and trauma. Carrying the burden of shame and stigma can do damage on the body, and Bridget is alive today, to help others so they don't have to experience that weight.
