Daniel 1:1-7
1. Isolation, v. 3-4
“There is one thing a professor can be a absolutely certain of; almost every student entering the university believes, or says he believes, that truth is relative...Relativism is necessary to open-mindedness; and this is the virtue, the only virtue, which all primary education for more than fifty years has dedicated itself to inculcating. Openness- and the relativism that makes it the only plausible stance in the face of various claims to truth and various ways of life and kinds of human beings- is the great insight of our times. The study of history and of culture teaches that all the world was mad in the past; men always thought they were right, and that led to wars, persecutions, slavery, xenophobia, racism, and chauvinism. The point is not to correct the mistakes and really be right; rather it is not to think you are right at all.”
-Allan Bloom, The Closing of the American Mind
2. Indoctrination, v. 3-5
Four things about this indoctrination process...
a) comes disguised as “education”
b) starts with changing a persons worldview- a worldview is a particular philosophy of life or conception of the world
c) the goal is to train them to think like Babylonians rather than Israelites
d) the ultimate goal is to instill in them a total dependence upon Nebuchadnezzar for everything they need.
“So this fall, virtual class discussion will have many potential spectators- parents, sibling, etc- in the same room. We’ll never be quite sure who is overhearing the discourse. What does this do for our equity/inclusion work? How much have students depended on the (somewhat) secure barriers of our physical classrooms to encourage vulnerability? How many of us have installed some version of ‘what happens here stays here’ to help this? While conversation about race are in my wheelhouse, and remain a concern in this no walls environment, I am most intrigued by the damage that ‘helicopter/snowplow’ parents can do in the host conversations about gender/sexuality. And while conservative parents are my chief concern-I know that the damage can come from the left too. If we are engaged in the messy work of destabilizing a kid’s racism or homophobia or transphobia-how much do we want their classmates parents piling on?”
-Matthew Kay, English teacher, Science Leadership Academy, Philadelphia, PA
3. Incorporation, v. 5
- Romans 12:1-2, The Message
vv. 8-21
4. Identification, v. 6-7
Hebrew namesBabylonian names
Daniel: “God is my judge” Belteshazzar: “Lady protect the king”
Hananiah: “Yahweh is gracious” Shadrach: “I am very fearful of God”
Mishael: “Who is what God is?” Meschach: “I am of little account”
Azariah: “Yahweh has helped” Abednego: “Servant of the god Nebo”
Two things to notice...
a) people over place
b) they maintained their status as exiles
I Peter 2:11-17
Mental worship...
How has not gathering for public worship affected you and what does that say about the role of weekly public worship? About you?
What are some ways that your faith informs and affects how you see the world?
Is there any water in your boat today and if so, how did it get there?
Do you live as an exile or have you learned to fit in with this world?
In the passage today, Daniel was creatively bold. What could you do right now that would be considered creatively bold?

How This All Got Started John 1:35-42 1. A picture of discipleship 2. People talking about Jesus Three ways people talk about Jesus: biblical proclamation- John the Baptist personal testimony- Andrew personal invitation- Jesus 3. Jesus is confrontational “And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” -Mark 9:33-37 I would like to buy about three dollars worth of God please. Not too much—just enough to make me happy, but not so much that I become inconvenient to any of my friends. I don’t want so much God that I learn to really hate covetousness, lust and my addiction. I certainly don’t want so much that I start to love my enemies, cherish self-denial, and contemplate others before myself. I want ecstasy, not repentance; I want transcendence, not transformation. I prefer a warm womb to actually being born again. I would like to be cherished by some nice, forgiving, broad-minded people, but I myself prefer to be left alone. I want to be appreciated but not accountable, more socialization without transformation, please. I would like enough God to make my family secure and my children well behaved, but not so much that I find my ambitions redirected or my giving too greatly enlarged. I would like as much of this as I can have without my plans changing. I would like about three dollars worth of the God, please.” -adapted from original by Wilbur Rees 4. The power of grace Grace is the unconditional acceptance of God which brings us into relationship with and exposure to the capacity of God. “For the grace of God has appeared (Jesus), bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness (NO) and world passions, and to live (YES) self-controlled, upright and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people of this own possession who are zealous for good works.” -Titus 2:11-14 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” -Luke 22:31-34 Personal Questions 1. Have I ever spent intentional time with a spiritually mature person for the purpose of becoming a disciple of Jesus? 2. How am I bearing witness to the reality of Christ right now? 3. Who or what am I avoiding that I should be confronting? 4. If God has the grace of acceptance and the power of transformation, what is keeping me from being changed?

HOW TO BE DIFFERENT
Colossians 4:2-6
1. Pray differently, v. 2
Three aspects to our prayers...
a) steadfastly- refers to our inward posture when we pray
b) being watchful- alert, don’t get lazy
Two ways you know you are not watchful in your prayers...
1) you say the same thing without much thought or emotion.
2) you think more about the people in the room hearing you pray than the God you are praying to.
c) with thanksgiving- grateful language, perspective on the God you are praying to
2. Think differently, v. 3-4.
Notice Paul’s prayer requests...
a) that God may open to us a door for the word
b) to declare the mystery of Christ
c) that I may make it clear
3. Walk differently, v. 5
4. Talk differently, v. 6
Colossians 4:6
Mental worship...
1. What is the average length of time you pray for something before giving up?
2. What do your prayers reveal about how you think?
3. Do you understand the difference between the opportunity and the outcome?
4. Does your speech need more salt or grace?
5. Are you more happy with or proud of your life?

The Causality of Faith
Acts 16:25-40
Causality is an influence by which one event, process, state, or object contributes to the production of another event, process, state, or object where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause.
1. Faith empowers us to defy our circumstances, v. 25
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”
-Matthew 5:21-24
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
- Matthew 5:27-28
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?”
- Matthew 5:43-47
2. Faith is often display in what we don’t do, v. 26-28
“Your true character is most on display when you get the upper hand on your enemies.” - Jack McGorman
3. Our lived faith causes others to desire faith, v. 29-32
v. 26- “all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.
4. True faith seeks to identify with the God of our faith, v. 33-34
Religious tradition vs. biblical Faith...
a) you have some rituals in your past but little joy in the present
b) its an external thing trying to get in not an internal reality trying to get out
c) nothing exercises dominion over what comes naturally
d) you have more excuses than experiences
e) you rarely submit to anybody or anything
f) you have always been in control
5. Faith sometimes calls for civil disobedience, v. 35-40
Mental worship...
1. What song is most consistently coming from your life these days?
2. What has the Faith given you the capacity to do that you by nature couldn’t?
