In this podcast episode, we discuss the challenges faced by businesses in the procurement process for government contracts. As companies grow and bid on larger contracts, they may need a Certified Professional Contracts Manager (CPSM) to be eligible for those contracts. ProcureLinks, helps businesses create a procurement manual that fits their culture and streamlines the procurement process for contracts under $25,000.

Managing regulations, including small business regulations, can be difficult, but compliance in Government contracting is subjective and depends on a company's risk tolerance. So we talk about how small business owners are to understand their pain points and risk tolerance in the industry to determine where they need to comply and where there may be gray areas. Tune in now to get valuable insights!

Denita R. Conway, Founder, and CEO, Proven Management has proven that you can be the change you want to see.

During the interview, she tells the story of the founding of her company. Without giving away too much of the story, the basis was often times when employees were working management was not available to offer direction or leadership. That situation frustrated so much she made the decision to establish her own standards and set out on her own that pathway.

Ms. Conway founded PROVEN Management in 2011 since that time has managed to grow at a rate of 25% each year – including during the shutdown in 2013. PROVEN has remained profitable and has grown from just 1 employee in 2011 to 102 full-time employees and now provides service to 29 government agencies in 48 cities.

Ms. Conway continues to make strides as evidenced by her winning the 2020 Washington Business Journal Minority leadership award. 2020 Enterprising women’s award, 2018 SBA Washington DC Small Businessperson of the year, 2017 USDA/Aphis HUBZONE small business contractor of the year, American Express OPEN 2016 Woman Contractor of the Year. In 2014, she was recognized with Washington DC's Smart CEO BRAVA! Award, and that same year, her firm was named Small Business of Year in Prince George’s County, MD.

In today’s episode, you will find out how has her business adjusted for COVID, where did this entrepreneur journey began, what is it like working at the Pentagon, her daily practices, success habits and much more

In today’s episode of Making a Giant we present to you veteran business owner Liseth Velez, CEO of LJV Development. She has recently become a superstar at the Govcon EDU breakout sessions as her company continues to land contract after contract both at the federal and state government levels.

Started out in the military as an HVAC Technician, Liseth is no stranger to hardwork or the construction industry. When she formed her company LJV, she immediately started to win small projects and dove into the private sector flipping homes. Yet even with her past experience and revenue under her belt, the government sector was risk averse and wanted to see more.

I remember the very first time meeting her at a conference here in South Florida where I moderated a panel discussing government contracting. Miss Velez attended the conference while she was supposed to be recovering from a recent surgery and was walking on crutches. She literally Uber-ed 45 minutes from her hotel to Miami to attend an event in another city exposing herself to like minded individuals which I would say is pretty remarkable.

Many of us out there would rather make excuses than to do the hard work. Liseth did the opposite. She took advantage of her time off and used it to help catapult her business, I knew at that point she would be a star in the making. Learning that she was in the construction industry serving New England as do I, we exchanged information and has been friends since that day. I’m so happy for her success and can’t wait to see what the next few years has in store for LJV.

Over the next 60 minutes, Maria and Liseth discuss her early beginnings as a newly formed company with no federal past performance doing all that she can to get early wins. Enjoy this episode with the two of my favorite students Maria and Liseth.

In this episode of The Daily Windup, we have expert guests talk about the SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) process. They discuss the challenges of turning an idea into a business and taking it to the commercial market, which is where most entrepreneurs fail. We explore how venture capitalists come in to fund commercialization, but if entrepreneurs do not know how to scale and enter into a business, the funding becomes pointless.

We also talk about how the SBIR process is not just about technology transfer, as entrepreneurs are seeking to control their technology, sell it to the government, and then take it to the commercial marketplace. They caution against throwing ideas at the SBIR that do not match the needs of the agencies. SBIR helps entrepreneurs market themselves by providing a platform to build on their technology and expertise, so listen to this episode to know how.
