Master Sommelier reviews '100 Point Wine'
Got Somme : Master Sommelier's Wine Podcast
07/25/24 • 10 min
Does '100 Points' mean a wine is "Perfect" and if so does that mean we are comparing that bottle against the worlds best?
After seeing one of Australia's best wine writers Erin Larkins review of 2022 The Standish 'Lamella' we knew we had to get our hands on it and see what a Master Sommelier thinks!
A little bit about Standish via Goodwood Cellars:
A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk.
As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines!

Shiraz - 2015 Saltram 'PepperJack', Barossa Valley, South Australia
Got Somme : Master Sommelier's Wine Podcast
09/08/22 • 9 min
After mentioning this bottle since our first EVER episodes we've finally popped the top off potentially Australia's most chosen table wine.
Now that Angus has learnt from Master Sommelier Carlos Santos that "Pepper" in wine can also be confused with "Mint" or "Eucalyptus" we were keen to assess whether the title of this bottle has been lying to us for all these years.
Does this make our top 3 best value bottle of wine in the country? Is it in yours?

Viognier - 2019 Paul Jaboulet Aîné 'Parallèle 45' Côtes Du Rhône Blanc, Rhone Valley, France
Got Somme : Master Sommelier's Wine Podcast
09/01/22 • 10 min
Having tried a Viognier from Australia it was only fair to give the 'Old World' of wine a chance to show their expression of the grape. This bottle blends Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc but mostly Viognier to create a "fruit basket" on the nose. How does our previous Viognier bottle from Eden Valley, South Australia compare and what is this bottle missing in the opinion of a Master Sommelier? Press play on EP35 to find out!
Quiz: Head to our instagram after listening and answer this question: Why is this bottle called 'Parallele 45'?

Got Somme : Master Sommelier's Wine Podcast
06/13/24 • 22 min
Have a cracking bottle of Red Wine and you don't know if you should decant it?
If you should - how long for?
Master Sommelier Carlos Santos is here to debunk the decanting myths and describe the many benefits, including separating the sediment from the liquid. This is especially helpful for red wines. Decanting also enhances a wine's flavour by exposing it to oxygen, and allowing it to breathe.
In this episode of Got Somme: We decant one wine into 3 different vessels to explain the process and why once decanted we can assess 3 different experiences.
Get ready to find out how to be rid of your wine dregs aka sediment and give your cherished wines their best chance.

“Victoria’s BEST wine region!” Revealed in 3...2...1... 🍷
Got Somme : Master Sommelier's Wine Podcast
02/01/24 • 24 min
Chardonnay can be a divisive wine when really it shouldn't! If you don't like Chardonnay chances are you probably just don't like over oaked Chardonnay.
The grape variety itself is actually neutral and if you were to taste a Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Chardonnay next to a William Fevre Petit Chablis you would be mistaken for thinking they are two completely different grape varietals.
The difference? Oak
One with plenty and one without any!
In this episode of Got Somme, Yarra Valley local Brenden Robnik aka 'The Wine Animal' joins us in studio to deep dive his favourite Australian wine region while also looking at the complex differences altitude can make on Chardonnay separated only by a few kilometres.
Disagree that the Yarra Valley is the best wine region in Victoria?
