Introducing Dear Alana, a new show from Tenderfoot TV
Good Pop | Culture Club
08/24/23 • 35 min
Our regular episode of Good Pop will be dropping a little later this week, but in the meantime we're excited to share with you the first episode of a new thrilling podcast from our partners at Tenderfoot TV, Dear Alana,
Dear Alana, is a show exploring the life of Alana Chen, a 24-year-old woman who disappeared from Boulder, Colorado in 2019. Alana left behind two dozen journals chronicling a deep faith, love of fashion, and dream of becoming a nun. She also harbored a secret. At 14, she confessed to her priest that she was attracted to women and was instructed not to tell her parents. Over the next seven years, Alana covertly received conversion therapy which her family believes played a role in her fate.
----
Part 1: Mom
Simon travels to Boulder to meet Alana’s mother, Joyce, and becomes determined to help her understand what happened to Alana.
This episode contains references to suicide. If you or someone you know is in need of help, please contact the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988. Listener discretion is advised.

Take a nap with us as we enter The Dreaming to discuss Netflix's adaptation of the Neil Gaiman's seminal comic book series, The Sandman, which is finally making its live action debut after literally decades of attempts. We dive into a (semi-spoilery) discussion about this series about anthropomorphized concepts, and how they influence and learn from the mess that is humanity. (Spoiler warning: we do discuss some major plot points so we recommend listening after you've seen the series)
What's Popping? - House of Dragons, Junior Baking Show

From Ma-Yi Theater Company (The Chinese Lady, Teenage Dick) comes a generation-spanning new journey through the historical and fantastical. Mixing traditional Korean fables with the horrors of the Korean War, Daniel K. Isaac’s epic new play is a funny and deeply moving analog for the experiences of the Korean American diaspora. Isaac deftly moves his characters through time, tracing the legacies of trauma that are passed from one generation to the next, and the various coping mechanisms each one uses to soldier on.
