Senator Gerard Craughwell was the first Independent member to be directly elected to the Seanad in 2014. He was re-elected in 2016 and is a member of the Independent Technical Group in the Seanad. As a member of both the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs and the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement Committee, he is heavily involved with addressing the economic and political challenges of a hard Brexit.
His work on Committees relating to Brexit (uniquely being on three committees that have BREXIT as part of their remit (European Affairs, Good Friday Committee and the special Seanad Committee on Brexit) . He was the person who suggested having a special Brexit Committee in the first place.
