Tornadoes are not unique to the United States. But they do occur within the United States with greater frequency and strength than anywhere else on the planet due to a unique combination of geographic features. In today's episode, we discuss why the U.S. gets so many tornadoes, where they also occur elsewhere in the world, and why Alabama is actually one of the deadliest areas in the world for tornadoes.

Greenland is the world's largest non-continental island, but it's probably still not as large as maps have lead you to believe. And in addition to its misleading size, is its misleading name! Greenland doesn't not have all that much greenery. Join Geoff and Hunter as they explore this vast icy island, what goes on there, and why the United States tried to buy it back in 2019.

The U.S. Postal Service is a foundational part of the United States. And during it's nearly 250 year existence it's delivered a lot of mail! One way in which it's been able to be so effectvie is by carving up the country into ZIP codes, which have since spread far and wide to become a defacto geographic unit for things well beyond carrying mail. And because of this, bicycles have become a cultural icon the world over, as cities and people have used it to move around.

More than anything else, petroleum (or gasoline) truly makes the world go round. It powers our personal vehicles, freight trucks, train, and ships and even our large passenger jets. Because of this it's extremely valuable! So much so that oil is being extracted from the ground on every continent except Antarctica. In this episode, we run through the geography of oil production, how oil became a staple fuel, and what "peak oil" even means anymore.

Few holidays are as associated with a single country as Saint Patrick's Day is to Ireland. And there's a good reason for that! Not only does the holiday borrow from legends and tales that arise from the island, but also the holiday is sort of foundational for the country itself! In this episode, Hunter and Geoff trace how Saint Patrick's Day went from a single person to a global holiday to celebrate Irish-ness!
