This week we welcome Drs. Dwayne Elmore and Bronson Strickland to school us all on aflatoxin. Aflatoxins are produced by a couple of species of fungi in the genus Aspergillus that can appear in a variety of situations, and when ingested can be harmful to the very birds and mammals we cherish. Our expert guests thoroughly explain aflatoxin, practices we can follow to help prevent it, what to do if we discover molded feed, and then offer some feed solutions that can help. Anyone that feeds corn or uses feed based attractants needs to pay attention and be informed. Respect the science and the game we love. Listen, Learn and Be a Responsible Gamekeeper.

Gamekeeper Podcast - EP:115 | Gamekeeping with Gerald Swindle
play

10/18/22 • 88 min

This week we have a lot of fun with our guest Gerald Swindle. He’s a well celebrated professional bass fisherman, but is also a rabid Gamekeeper who intensively manages properties in multiple states. We discussed improving the hunting, habitat and value of his properties in between his funny comments. You just have to hear his story about qualifying for The Bassmaster Classic with an upset stomach. If you don’t laugh, something is wrong with you. Juxtaposed against his funny stories, Gerald also may have made the most poignant comment said so far on the Gamekeepers podcast. It had to do with wearing camo and it really hit home. Mike Chamberlain and Bret Collier, and like them, he’s an avid turkey hunter and has really paid attention to the findings. We also talk turkey season dates and the thoughts so far on their effectiveness. Ever wondered how they count birds and establish limits? We touch on that. We also talk about avian predators having an effect on our turkeys. We think it’s a real thing. It’s an interesting discussion and one anyone interested in turkeys will appreciate.
