Fruitbowl’s creator and producer, Dave Quantic, provides his first full-length Fruitbowl interview in this “very special” episode hosted by editor Ryan Weadon.

Dave’s sexual orientation came into focus early on while growing up in small-town, suburban Kansas in the late eighties, but the only place he could meet other queer people was cruising bathrooms and public parks in near-by Wichita. An assault and HIV scare inspired him to come out in college and, eventually, to his family.

Since then, he’s lived in Dallas, New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle and, along the way, his preferences for negotiating love, sex and friendship have diverged from conventional ideas about relationships. It’s only in the last few years that he’s figured out what he wants and how he wants to live as a gay man.

You might assume you don’t have much in common with a 71 year old lesbian, but consider these three points: 1. Debra came of age at the dawn of the sexual revolution; 2. She’s a legend in the lesbian kink community and has some really fun kink play stories; 3. She is a total badass and a one of a kind human.

Growing up in famously liberal Palo Alto, Debra was a precocious young woman, hungry for knowledge but a proposal from a “perfect” boyfriend in her 20s felt premature so she broke his heart and dove into the deep end of California 70s counterculture at UC Santa Cruz. Soon she was exploring the GLBT club and her sexuality was confirmed when she saw a gorgeous woman step off her motorcycle and reveal her long, luscious hair.

Since then, it’s been one adventure after another: New York, Seattle, LA. And the adventure continues to this day. Debra recently decided to leave LA, move into a van and travel the country visiting friends and making new ones. Check out this link for Route 70+, a charming short film by Nina Penzhorn that illustrates Debra’s journey.

Her final advice: have as much fun sex as you can so you can look back on it fondly when you’re old.

Lilian grew up in Sedalia Colorado, a small community outside of Denver. Growing up, Lilian was a good little straight boy who judged other kids for having pre-marital sex. It wasn’t until college in LA that Lilian began her journey into becoming a self-described non-binary, genderfluid transgender woman who is a solo-polyamorous, relationship-anarchist pansexual lesbian slut.

An advocate for sexual liberation, Lilian describes the unique sexual relationships she has with various friends. She also shares intimate details about her gender journey which includes two gender affirming surgeries in an effort to attain the body she has always wanted.

Introducing the premiere episode of the Getting Fresh series reboot. For season four, these episodes will feature informal conversations with interviewees whose main Fruitbowl interviews are more than a year old.

In this episode Justin updates us about how his relationship with his husband has evolved during the pandemic and the accommodations that the couple has made for their “extra curricular” partners. We also touch on Fort Lauderdale’s Pig Week and Justin’s creative work as a comic creator and film producer.

But first, Dave introduces the first listener-submitted story from an old friend, Jason (S1E1). Jason shares a super sexy story about meeting an enthusiastic partner who has a thing for corn fields.

Send in your comments or sexy stories to [email protected] via your phone’s voice memo app or just write an email or tweet at @fruitbowlpod. If you need a prompt for a story idea, tell me about a memorable hook up with a unique person or in a surprising location!

Raised by feminists who had strong opinions about women’s rights, pro-choice advocacy and lesbian visibility, Justin knew early on his sexuality wasn’t pre-determined. But even in liberal college-town Providence, RI he was a target of less-evolved classmates. When presented with his first opportunity for sex experimentation, he chose the D and hasn’t looked back.

But ambivalence about masculine tropes and romantic love kept him from finding community with other gay men. It wasn’t until he discovered the Hole In The Wall bar in San Francisco that Justin found his tribe and made lasting friendships including his partner of 20 years.

Justin has finally given in to his family’s tradition of higher education employment after years as an independent queer comics artist and a brief stint as an adult film performer. He recently finished work as a producer of NO STRAIGHT LINES, an award winning feature documentary about the rich history of queer comic creators. You can check out the trailer HERE.

This episode features a voice that will be familiar with Fruitbowl fans: our very own host with the most, Saira B.! After just a few minutes of listening, you’ll soon learn why Saira (who, BTW, uses ALL the pronouns) is the perfect person to represent the amazing diversity of experiences of Fruitbowl interviewees.

Raised in Wilmington, Delaware to academic parents who trusted their kid to explore cities like Philly and NYC all by herself, Saira was always informed about his body’s different functions including how babies get made by a mom who valued clear communication about the science of the body. As they grew into adolescence, Saira applied this same academic curiosity to her interest in sex and kink and they have some great advice when it comes to exploring BDSM: make sure to inform yourself about the kinds of kink you want to explore, communicate with your partner or partners clearly and don’t assume that the top doesn’t also need aftercare.

Fruitbowl: An Oral History of Queer Sex

play

10/12/21 • 67 min

Andre can’t remember a time when people thought he was straight. Raised as a girl by an independent single mom who took a “tough love” approach to parenting, Andre grew up with a rich inner life but had few friends. “Lesbean” was the preferred insult in grade school, so Andre made up a fictional boyfriend in order to avoid talking about sex.

Even after entering college and coming out as trans, Andre identified as asexual until he met his first girlfriend when they were the only ones who showed up to a sober vegan pride after party.

It wasn’t until he moved to Chicago and lived alone that Andre realized he was free to explore sex on his own terms. He informed himself about kink, explored bathhouses for the first time and his first experience bottoming came from an unexpected guide.

Now that he has more experience under his belt, Andre has decided to stop being the token “first trans male experience” for sex partners and has dedicated himself to being a sex-positive advocate for trans rights.

Andre is Producing an original film titled DESIRE LINES, an expansive portrait of a trans-inclusive gay community across several generations, artfully weaving together never-before seen archival footage, historical fiction, contemporary interviews, and re-enactments. The bathhouse is the central hub of the film, where past and present meet, where fantasies unfold, and where the archives spring to life through historical fiction. The diverse participants share their fantasies and fears about sex, bodies, relationships, and power through intimate conversations shot in their own domestic spaces. The same contemporary interview participants are also invited to write, embody, and perform their own bathhouse-related fantasies in moments that cleave open a space between fiction and reality, emphasizing fantasy as a powerful tool for seeing ourselves else wise. Dan grew up just north of Seattle and his adolescence was uniquely queer-positive in that it featured supportive parents and plentiful queer friends even in high school. But Dan had his share of challenges including insecurities about sexual performance, penis size and a long journey to discovering his preference for polyamorous relationships.

An early education in flirting came courtesy of a friendly dominatrix and Dan describes some fun role playing as a "boy" with his Daddy and Big Brother partners (who are both younger than he is). Dan also provides a super-detailed, step by step description of his cleaning out process that's his "me" time and allows him to be the best bottom that he can be.

Karilla’s story, in so many ways, reflects the common stages of personal growth that so many queer people go through: in our early years, insecurity about our bodies and sexuality and adults who fail to help guide us; during high school, sitting on the sidelines and watching as our friends perform all the typical hetero coming of age rituals; in college, painful memories about first love and the lessons we learn from heartbreak; and in the end, finally choosing our family and accepting and loving ourselves. And did I mention that she’s had some really fun hookups?

In my introduction to this episode, I talk a little bit about my efforts to interview more female-identified people. It’s my hope that, over time, as the FRUITBOWL episode archive grows, more cis women will hear episodes like Karilla’s and trust me with their stories. In fact, I’m determined to collect at least 20 interviews with female-identified interviewees before I even think of starting to edit the larger FRUITBOWL feature or TV series. So if you or someone you know is femme identified and interested in sharing, please reach out to me via the contact portal on the https://www.fruitbowlpodcast.com/contact.
