FORE the Good of the Game

World Golf Hall of Fame member Donna Caponi grew up in Southern California and learned the game from her father, a club professional at DeBell Golf Club where Donna received her first set of new clubs at age 8. She developed her game quickly and knew, by age 15, that she wanted to be a professional golfer. With no high school team to compete on and no plan to attend college, Donna turned pro at age 19 in 1965. She reminisces with Bruce about life on the road back in the 60's running with the likes of Marlene Hagge, Susie Berning and her early tour roommate, Judy Rankin. We conclude this episode with Donna recounting her first win on the LPGA Tour, the 1969 U.S. Women's Open, and her memories of Kathy Whitworth. World Golf Hall of Fame member and the winningest player on any Tour ever, Kathy Whitworth, begins her remarkable story by sharing how she came to the game of golf at age 15 using her grandfather's clubs and how the local pro, Texas Golf HOF member Hardy Loudermilk, provided early guidance before sending her off to Austin, Texas to see the renowned teacher, Harry Penick. These two men shaped the game of Kathy, who turned professional in 1958 and joined the fledging LPGA Tour the following year. She recalls the tough times she endured before finally cashing a check at the Land of the Sky Open and reaching the winner's circle in 1962. Hear Kathy talk about some of the Founders of the LPGA, fascinating women with strong personalities all. The all-time leader in U.S. Tour wins with 88 LPGA victories, Kathy Whitworth takes us down the home stretch of her career from the 1970's forward beginning with her win in the 1971 LPGA Championship at Pleasant Valley CC. Her sixth and final major win came at the 1975 LPGA Championship at Pine Ridge Golf Course. In 1981 she was the first woman to pass the $1M mark in career earnings and in 1982 she tied and then beat Mickey Wright's record of 82 wins. Kathy fondly recalls her experience as the Captain of the inaugural Solheim Cup Team in 1990 and looks back on many of the great players that she enjoyed competing with. Truly a remarkable career and an exceptional lady, Kathy Whitworth concludes her life story, "FORE the Good of the Game."
