Steve Jones - Part 2 (The Early Tour Wins)
FORE the Good of the Game
09/09/24 • 36 min
In part two of our four-part visit with Major Champion Steve Jones we hear him reflect on the adjustments to being on the road on the Tour in strange cities playing courses he had yet to learn. After reflecting on being the Q School medalist in 1986 with some fine players, Steve talks about winning his first meaningful check, teaming with Australian Jane Crafter to win the JC Penney Classic and then finding the winner's circle with his first PGA TOUR win at the 1988 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am back when Cypress Point was still in the rotation. He talks about his best year on tour, winning three times in 1989 including the Tournament of Champions, a week later at the Bob Hope and then prevailing at the Canadian Open. Little did Steve know at the time but the next few years leading up to his 1996 U.S. Open win would challenge his faith and his confidence. Stay tuned as Steve Jones continues his inspirational tale, "FORE the Good of the Game."

Jack Nicklaus - Part 3 (The U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open)
FORE the Good of the Game
11/14/24 • 48 min
Jack Nicklaus, winner of 18 professional major championships and two U.S. Amateur titles, joins us for a look back at his experience in the majors. In this episode we explore his U.S. Open record. Listen in as Jack recounts his U.S. Amateur victories and competing in his first major at the 1957 U.S. Open at Inverness playing as a 17-year-old amateur. He takes us through his near-miss at Cherry Hills in 1960 where he played his final two round with Ben Hogan. Jack broke Hogan's scoring record prevailing at the 1967 event at Baltusrol. Two second-place finishes to Trevino in 1968 and 1971 preceded his second win at Pebble Beach in 1972, famed for his spectacular 1-iron shot on the 17th. He shares memories of his final win in 1980, again at Baltusrol, and again setting a new scoring record. You will enjoy his retelling of Tom Watson's famous chip-in to sneak past Jack in 1982 at Pebble Beach and his disappointment with how he finished his final U.S. Open in 2000. Jack Nicklaus concludes this segment by reflecting back on the importance of the U.S. Open to himself and other American golfers, "FORE the Good of the Game."

FORE the Good of the Game
09/30/24 • 39 min
World Golf Hall of Fame member Donna Caponi grew up in Southern California and learned the game from her father, a club professional at DeBell Golf Club where Donna received her first set of new clubs at age 8. She reminisces with Bruce about life on the road back in the 60's running with the likes of Marlene Hagge, Susie Berning and her early tour roommate, Judy Rankin. We conclude this episode with Donna recounting her first win on the LPGA Tour, the 1969 U.S. Women's Open, and her memories of Kathy Whitworth. Donna Caponi begins her life story, "FORE the Good of the Game."

Jan Stephenson - Part 2 (Early Wins and Being the Face of the LPGA Tour)
FORE the Good of the Game
09/24/24 • 31 min
3-time major championship winner, Jan Stephenson, reflects back on her early years on the LPGA Tour and recounts several of her 27 professional wins including her first at the 1973 Wills Australian Ladies Open. Jan describes how her life changed when, in 1977, Sport Magazine used a photo of a bra-less Stephenson, not intended for publication, on the cover of their magazine. She relates how, in the crazed aftermath of that photo, LPGA Commissioner Ray Volpe recognized an opportunity to change the tour's image to attract more fans and sponsors. And so, Jan Stephenson became the face of the LPGA Tour and a reluctant sex symbol. She worked tirelessly, often giving of her time freely, to promote the Tour for the benefit of everybody. Despite the distractions, she was able to amass a marvelous record in golf, "FORE the Good of the Game."

Catherine Lacoste - Part 3 (Winning the British and U.S. Amateurs)
FORE the Good of the Game
07/24/24 • 32 min
We wrap up our visit with Women's U.S. Open champion and French amateur great Catherine Lacoste by first looking back on a 13-month stretch of a dozen match and stroke-play events where she did not lose. After winning the 1968 Women's Western Amateur, she reeled off victories the following year at the British Ladies Amateur, the Women's U.S. Amateur, the Spanish International Ladies Amateur and the French Amateur, becoming the only woman to ever hold these titles at the same time.
After this remarkable run, Catherine was married, started a family and essentially "retired" from international competition at the age of 25. However, many more victories were to come in individual and team competitions including later play as a Senior. She was arguably France's finest amateur golfer.
Outside the ropes, Catherine was a long-time Board member of the family fashion business Lacoste and served for many years as the President of the family's Chantaco Golf Club.
Catherine Lacoste concludes her life story, "FORE the Good of the Game."
