For Screen and Country
Brendan and Jason go back to films somewhat related to movies on the BFI Top 100 with And Now for Something Completely Similar. This week, Brendan and Jason don their uniforms for the wild and wacky antics of the girls at one of the worst schools in the world. Yes, it's the 2007 reboot of The Belles of St. Trinian's simply shortened to St. Trinian's. The guys talk about everything including the film debut of Russell Brand playing himself instead of Flash Harry, the various modern-day updates including a theme song, the weird reality TV subplot, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth romancing each other and much more. Next week: The guys continue their non-BFI Top 100 journey with a movie inspired by Anonioni's Blowup (#60 on the list) in the form of Brian DePalma's mystery thriller Blow Out starring John Travolta. And Now For Something Completely Similar: Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Brendan and Jason go back to films somewhat related to movies on the BFI Top 100 with And Now for Something Completely Similar. This week, the guys discuss the sequel to the 1998 hit Elizabeth (#71 on the BFI Top 100) aptly titled Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Much is discussed from the lack of interest in any of the romantic elements, Cate Blanchett continuing to be magnetic in the title role, the film's historical accuracy (or lack thereof), the accusations of anti-catholicism leveled against the movie and much more. Plus: play America's favourite gameshow - is Jason looking too much into this? Next week: The guys continue the non-BFI Top 100 journey by talking about the modern reboot of The Belles of St. Trinian's simply known as St. Trinian's. Brendan and Jason go back to films somewhat related to movies on the BFI Top 100 with And Now for Something Completely Similar. This week, the guys breathe a sigh of relief as they discuss Blow Out, Brian De Palma's answer to Antonioni's 60s counter-culture classic Blow Up (#60 on the list). The guys take a look at the amazing sound design throughout the film, they talk about John Lithgow's transformative performance as a cold, calculating killer, they debate if De Palma is paying homage or ripping off Hitchcock, the bleak ending is broken down and much more. Next week: The guys complete the off-brand series with St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold. In two weeks: The guys watch a movie well in tune with our current world situation.
