Florida Podcast Network's All Shows Feed - Florida Beer Podcast - Episode 36: Best of the Belgians Beerfest & Crooked Thumb Brewing
play

01/30/20 • -1 min

This is going to be quite the busy episode of the Florida Beer Podcast, so hang in there... We start in Boca Raton, close to where the 2nd Annual Best of the Belgians Beer Fest is going to be held on Sat., Feb. 8th. This event celebrates Belgian and Belgian-style beers with a rather impressive list of breweries, domestic and direct from Belgium as well. It is put on by Boca Ballet Theatre and Barrel of Monks, and proceeds go to support the Ballet Theatre. To get some more info, we chat with Barrel of Monks co-owner and brewmaster Bill McFee to learn more about the festival, the beneficiary, and whether Westvleteren will appear. From there, we go across the state to Safety Harbor, to an interview I've been wanting to do for some time. It's the home of Crooked Thumb Brewing, rapidly growing and making big bounds in the Pinellas Co. and Tampa Bay beer scene. We chat with Travis Kruger, co-founder of Crooked Thumb, to learn a bit more about their expanding footprint, that name, and the kitties that run around the tap room. Listen in...

She was born in Jamaica and moved to Palm Beach County with her single mom when she was 9. She was painfully shy and had a hard time learning. She found track and field in high school and immediately loved the sport and her coach. Antoinette Wilks qualified for the Olympic trials twice, but a devastating injury after college ended her Olympic hopes. She says it's the best thing that ever happened to her, because it put her on a path to finding her true passion. In this episode of People of Palm Beach, Wilks talks about her new career as a track and field coach at Keiser College, her charity and the learning disability that still brings her to tears. Listen to why Antoinette Wilks is one of the most driven People of Palm Beach...

This week, we start with vodka, straight from Miami! Bernard Smalls is the creator of BALT Vodka, a 7-times distilled, gluten-free, South Florida strawberry-flavored vodka that is out of this world. He created it to celebrate the friends he lost to gun violence in Miami Gardens, and we'll talk to him about those experiences, the creation of BALT Vodka, and where you can find it.

After that, we're going into the vault, back to St. Augustine in Jan. of 2020. We spoke to Doug and Courtney Murr, owners of the recently reopened Dog Rose Brewing in St. Augustine's Lincolnville neighborhood. Listen to them as we chat about Doug's considerable time brewing in the Nation's Oldest City, brewing for tourists vs. brewing for locals, and those tour trains that keep passing by. Listen in...

I do enjoy a good beer fest. Happily, I was able to enjoy a good beer fest and one that I had not been to before! And while Champions Beerfest has been on the Florida Beer Podcast before, that was pre-COVID and, unfortunately, I never got the chance to attend. But, it was back--in a new home at Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach. I spoke with organizer Jim Hammett and host Virginia Sinicki of 97.9 WRMF's KVJ show about the festival, brands represented, and their beneficiary Little Smiles (LittleSmilesFL.org). From there, I chatted a bit with Lorenzo Borghese, founder of South Beach Brewing, Chris Hall of Noxx and Dunn Florida Rum, and Amyad Amra of Two Drums Florida Rum Cocktail, all of which were happy to provide a little insight into their brands and how they are able to spread a little Florida sunshine through their products. Here's a big episode for everyone! A lot is going on in Florida Craft, so we are back with an extra-awesome episode of the Florida Beer Podcast!

We start in Miami at Beat Culture Brewing not talking about beer at all! The Beat Culture team has been blowing up the Magic City with, of all things, mead! We spoke to co-owner Alan Espinosa about their history making meads, the styles they love to make, and some of the interesting legal differences between mead and beer in the Sunshine State.

Next, we go north to Black Flamingo Brewing. Owner/brewer Manny Jannes has been on the South Florida beer scene for years, bringing his family culture and South Florida's Hispanic influences to his beers. We sat down to understand those cultural influences, and how South Florida is uniquely suited to bring a new insight and a much-needed change to a very homogenous industry.

Finally, we end in the Grand Central district of St. Petersburg, FL. and Grand Central Brewhouse, the newest brewery to open in this fast-growing hub of Florida beer. We are getting the full lowdown from Founder and CEO Kevin Milkey as to the history of the location, the decision to open in St. Pete, and the growing influence of the district. Listen in...
