Episode # 290 Pinocchio with Tom Salinsky and Rob Miller
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
03/15/23 • 47 min
Tom Salinsky (Best Pick podcast) and Rob Miller (Creative Industry Insight podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Tom’s choice Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a 2022 stop-motion animated musical fantasy, directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson. Loosely based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, this version reimagines the story of Pinocchio, set in fascist Italy between World War I and II. It won the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Geppetto (David Bradley) is a woodcarver who tragically loses his beloved son Carlo, who is killed during a bombing raid. He carves a wooden boy which The Wood Sprite (Tilda Swinton) brings to life and assigns Sebastian J. Cricket (Ewan McGregor) to teach and guide him. Geppetto is initially terrified by Pinocchio and then frustrated by his antics and is forced to send him to school. But on the way he is tricked by Count Volpe (Christoph Waltz) and his monkey Spazzatura (Cate Blanchett) and ends up in their circus.
Not surprising then that Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio shares many visuals and themes found in his other works like The Devils Backbone or Pan’s Labyrinth. The stop-motion is unbelievably detailed and clearly a labour of love. Scores for recommendability were mixed, Pinocchio looks beautiful but some of the songs don’t land and it is on occasion too terrifying and sad to be a children’s film, however it still manages to score a very respectable 3.33 overall.

Episode # 291 Your Place or Mine with Mel and Bethany from Movement is Life
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
03/22/23 • 32 min
Mel and Bethany from Movement is Life, a podcast series from Intelligent Health, join Flixwatcher to review Mel’s choice Your Place or Mine.
Your Place or Mine is a 2023 romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon as Debbie and Ashton Kutcher as Peter. The film starts in 2003 where Debbie and Peter hook up at a party and have a one night stand. 20 years later they are best of friends even though Debbie is now a single mum living in LA and Peter is a successful business man living in New York. On Peter’s birthday they arrange a house swap so Debbie can attend a course and Peter can look after Debbie’s son, Jack.
Predictably, Debbie and Peter end up together but in a slightly complicated way. Your Place or Mine has shades of The Holiday with the house swap but the dodgy CGI ruins any romantic feelings for New York. There isn’t really a meet-cute and the realisation of their real romance is a bit icky.
It was universally agreed by Flixwatcher and guests that Your Place or Mine is a tragic misfire, zero chemistry between Reese and Ashton and convoluted plot. Recommendability scores for Your Place or Mine were not great and with a run time of nearly two hours, way longer than it needs to be, the engagement wasn’t high either and it scores 2.88 overall.

Episode # 262 Labyrinth with Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
08/17/22 • 46 min
Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Will’s choice Labyrinth.
Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy directed by Jim (The Muppets) Henson and written by Terry (Monty Python) Jones. It stars David Bowie (who also wrote the songs) as Jareth the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly, in her breakout role, as Sarah.
After wishing that the goblins come and take away her baby brother Toby, Sarah has to tackle the labyrinth in 13 hours to rescue him or he will turn into a goblin. Along the way she encounters its unusual inhabitants - friends Hoggle, Ludo, Sir Didymus and foes The Firey’s and the Bog of Eternal Stench.
Hard to believe but Labyrinth was a box office flop and opened to mixed reviews, over the years, due it part to Bowie’s legacy, it has firmly become a cult classic and frequently sells out cinema screenings.
Labyrinth scores very highly across all Flixwatcher categories, only dropping a few points on small screen to score a very respectable 4.65 overall.

Episode # 285 Ammonite with Paul Klein and Jasmine Valentine from Filmhounds Magazine
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
02/08/23 • 36 min
Jasmine Valentine and Paul Klein from Filmhounds Magazine return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jasmine’s choice Ammonite.
Ammonite is a 2020 romantic period drama set in 1840s Lyme Regis directed by Francis (God's Own Country) Lee. Loosely inspired by the life of British palaeontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) it focuses on a speculative relationship with her and Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), a geologist who is left by her husband to convalescence under Mary’s care.
The setting of Lyme Regis isn’t especially exotic, cold, grey and clammy could be used to describe the chemistry as well the beaches. Jasmine was definitely more enamoured with this chilly romance than Paul and Flixwatcher. Despite this Ammonite still scores generously for recommendability, lower scores for repeat viewing and engagement gives an overall rating of 3.57.

Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
09/13/23 • 46 min

Bridesmaids (2011) is an American comedy written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, and directed by Paul Feig. It stars Kristen Wiig as Annie, Maya Rudolph as Lillian, Rose Byrne as Helen, Melissa McCarthy as Megan, Wendi McLendon-Covey as Rita, Ellie Kemper as Becca, Chris O'Dowd as Officer Nathan Rhodes, Matt Lucas as Gil, Rebel Wilson as Brynn and Jon Hamm as Ted.

A serious of unfortunate events, including explosive diarrhoea at a bridal boutique, lead Lillian to assign duties to Helen and break up with Annie.
Bridesmaids was a huge box office success and earned Melissa McCarthy and Wiig and Mumolo Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay respectively. Despite being too long Bridesmaids is very funny and recommendability scores reflected this. Lower scores for repeat viewing (there is no need for this to be two hours and 5 minutes long) give an overall rating of 3.75.

Episode # 340 Society of the Snow with Laila Khan and Barney boom from Sonic Boom Six
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
04/03/24 • 40 min
Laila Khan and Barney Boom from Sonic Boom Six join Flixwatcher to review Laila’s choice Society of the Snow.
Society of the Snow (2023) is based on the non-fiction book La Sociedad de la Nieve by Pablo Vierci and directed by J. A. (The Impossible) Bayona. It tells the incredible true story of the Uruguayan rugby team, who were travelling to Chile when their plane crashed in the Andes in 1972. The film was nominated for Best International Film at the 2024 Oscars.
On October 13, 1972, the Uruguayan rugby team and their family and friends board Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. Their destination is Santiago, Chile, but due to pilot error the plane descends too early and the plane stuck a mountain ridge. The impact splits the plane into two - the front fuselage sliding down a glacier. Of the 45 passengers on board, 29 survive the initial crash. The survivors are faced with unbelievable conditions as they struggle to stay alive.
This is not the first time the incredible true story has been portrayed on film. The 1993 film Alive was criticised for its portrayal by American actors. Society of Snow reclaims its own history by casting Uruguayan and Argentine actors and filming at the actual location.
Recommendability scores for Society of the Snow were very high, the crash scene in particular is heart-rending, due to its traumatic story repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.51.

The Harder They Fall is a 2021 Western debut film written and directed by Jeymes Samuel. Loosely based on real cowboys and outlaws of the 19th-century American West. Episode # 261 Midsommar with Ian Harries and Graham Jones from The Podcast Nobody Asked For
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
08/09/22 • 47 min
Midsommar is the 2019 second feature film from writer and director Ari Aster. Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor
William Jackson Harper and Will Poulter as a group a friends invited to visit Sweden to experience an exclusive midsummer festival. After a family tragedy, the tensions in the relationship between Dani and her boyfriend Christian are out in the open. Despite her obvious fragile mental state she agrees to come along and it is not long before strange things start happening and the lines between reality and hallucinations become blurred.
Midsommar is an extremely vivid and imaginative folk horror than manages to move between the disturbing and the amusing with ease. Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Florence Pugh helps the two hour and 27 minute run time feel light.
The Podcast Nobody Asked For has to date recommended Midsommar 146 times - therefore it was not a surprise that their scores for recommendabilty were the full five. Slightly lower scores for small screen - this is film best viewed with an audience on a big screen - gives an overall rating of 4.15.

Episode # 275 Lou with Linton Stephens and from BBCRadio3's and Bertie from BertAndBertie
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
11/16/22 • 41 min
Bertie from director duo “Bert and Bertie” and Linton Stephens (BBC Classical Fix) join Fixwatcher to review Bertie’s choice Lou.
Lou is a 2022 action thriller directed by Anna Foerster and it stars Allison Janney as Lou, a loner living with her dog on Orcas Island with a secret past that comes back to haunt her when a local girl is abducted.
Lou arrives at the same time as Michelle Yeah and Viola Davis are championing physical and powerful performances for women over the age of 50 and Janney impresses, particularly with her combat skills.
However impressive Janney is, Lou unfortunately feels a bit like a budget Taken. Scores for recommendability for Lou were generous but lower for repeat viewing and engagement to give an overall score of 3.37.

Episode # 237 My Neighbor Totoro with Carrie Morrison and Jessica Regan from The Best Pick movie podcast
Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast
01/12/22 • 40 min
Carrie Morrison (Lights, Carrie, Action podcast) and Jessica Regan (Best Pick podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Carrie’s choice My Neighbor Totoro. My Neighbor Totoro is the 1988 iconic Studio Ghibli animation. Written and directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki it tells the story of sisters Satsuki and Mei who move to a rural setting while their mother is unwell and in hospital. One day, Mei follows two spirits into the forest and finds a sleeping "Totoro" - a sort of chinchilla type animal - and falls asleep on its belly. Satsuki at first doesn’t believe Mei that the Totoro exists but later when they are waiting for the bus in the rain Totoro appears. With a run time of under 90 minutes My Neighbor Totoro is light on narrative but heavy on fantasy and animism - the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. It is impossible not to be drawn into the fantasy and charm of Totoro and this was heavily reflected in the scores. The recommendability scores for My Neighbor Totoro were very high but a little lower for engagement giving an overall rating of 4.04. [supsystic-tables id=249]
