Do you feel tired but wired? Have trouble sleeping? Brain fog? Trouble losing weight?
It’s time to pay attention to two small endocrine glands that sit right on top of the kidneys, called your adrenals.
The adrenals release several hormones, including cortisol. Cortisol’s main role is to prepare your body to interact with the external environment (such as to run from danger).
And if cortisol levels are too high, or too low, it’s very likely you’ll have a hard time losing weight.
When it comes to weight loss, we have been taught for years that to lose weight we must push harder: eat less, fast, go low carb, and do high intensity interval training.
And while those tactics might work for some, they don’t work for many women, especially if you’re already leading a full life: work, family, caring for parents and a brain that doesn’t seem to turn off.
I am delighted to chat with a fellow FDN, Hope Pedraza on the importance of supporting our adrenals so that we live a fit, vibrant and healthy life.
In this interview she shares:
- What the adrenals are and why they matter
- The consequences of living a fast paced, high stress life on your body
- How to support your adrenals so that you return to balance and resiliency

The two questions I get asked the most often are: "How do I get motivated?" and "How do I get more consistent?" If you're like most people, you feel inspired, motivated, and enthusiastic when you start a project or program. But over time, that motivation wanes. You feel less excited to close the kitchen after dinner. You feel less enthusiastic about drinking sparkling water instead of wine. You feel less motivated to get up before sunrise to go to the gym. In the past, you've given up. You slipped back into old habits and patterns. This time, let's do something different. Take a listen to this episode for a new perspective on enthusiasm.

362: All Emotions are Welcome Here
Fit in Real Life
10/16/23 • 20 min
I ventured out on a solo hike last weekend.
Tears streamed down my face as I climbed to the peak. And on the descent, I couldn't hold back the uncontrollable sobs.
It's definitely harder to cry while hiking up a mountain :)
During a coaching session last week, one courageous woman shed tears. She kept repeating, "This is silly. I shouldn't be struggling like this."
The pressure to maintain a perpetual positive facade weighs heavily on us. We're bombarded with messages urging us to "stay positive" and "look on the bright side." But what if this relentless pursuit of positivity is doing more harm than good?
There's a hidden side to this constant striving for positivity.
When we continually push away our negative emotions, we deny ourselves the chance to process and heal from them. And if we suppress them long enough, they take a toll on our mental well-being. They lead to heightened stress, anxiety, and sometimes even depression. It's like bottling up a volcano; eventually, it will erupt.
Remember Unikitty from the Lego Movie? That unicorn-cat mash-up who epitomized happiness and positivity until she transformed into Ultrakatty, an oversized, roaring fighting machine.
Suppressed emotions can also surface as physical health issues: digestive problems, stomach pain, tight muscles, or turning to food and other crutches as coping mechanisms.
By sidestepping or neglecting difficult emotions, we miss opportunities for personal growth and learning.
Press play on this podcast, head out for a walk, or grab a cup of tea and listen in. If we were in the same room, I'd offer you a big hug, and we'd share a good cry together.
Sending you warmth and understanding,
-Tanja 💕🌟
185: Should You Weigh Yourself?
Fit in Real Life
06/01/20 • 26 min
For many women, stepping on the scale can be an emotional endeavor. They do all the things: eat more veggies, workout, cut out sugar, and then the scale stays exactly the same.
As a result, they either double down on their efforts, or (and much more commonly) give up. After all, what's the point of doing all this work if there's no payoff? My own weigh-in habits have changed over the years- from letting it rule my life, to throwing it out and not weighing myself at all.
So, is a regular weigh in helpful or harmful? Join me on this week's episode of the Fit + Vibrant You Podcast as I answer this question!
