FIR #260: Grappling With Authenticity
FIR Podcast Network
06/02/22 • 14 min
We all know that leaders should strive for authenticity. What does that mean, exactly? It's easy to say authenticity is being who you are, but when you're meeting with a department that is struggling to succeed, are you the person who rocks out at concerts? The one who coos little nothings in the ear of your significant other? There's more to authenticity than just being genuine. Communicators need to understand the nuances since most leaders don't have the time for a graduate-level course on the subject.

EPISODE #74: OUR BEST EXPERT ADVICE FROM 2023
FIR Podcast Network
12/21/23 • 16 min
Our work as communicators is always evolving – there’s no finish line to cross or book to close. And, because of that, many of us are guilty of forgetting to take time to reflect on lessons learned and consider how our work is changing.
This year felt especially frenetic. The evolution of generative AI may have been the first talking point in many of our conversations, but that doesn’t come close to telling the whole story. Luckily, Sharon and I were able to discuss many of the industry’s hot topics with a few of the best minds in comms – highlighted in this episode. Here are some of our favorite insights featured on EE Voice in 2023:
- Shel Holtz had the foresight to embrace generative AI way back in January.
- Mark Dollins and his team at North Star Communications Consulting spent much of 2023 interviewing, researching and writing the whitepaper, “Artificial Intelligence & the Communicator” – a catch-all for comms pros looking to harness AI.
- Jason Anthoine joined us to discuss how internal communicators can successfully connect corporate strategy to the emotions that drive employees.
- Barbara Rozgonyi got us a little nostalgic, and explained how lessons from the past can inform future comms strategy.
- Kristi Munno explained her award-winning strategy for Town Halls, and praised communicators’ ability to pivot in a moment’s notice.
- David Murray helped us see the full communications picture, and advised us to take some time to plan for the future.
Thank you for listening. We wish all of our friends, guests, listeners, commenters and more happy holidays and can’t wait to speak with you again in 2024.

Even if you don’t use Silicon Valley Bank, Credit Suisse, or any of the other banks at the center of the news, there could be broader implications for banks and the overall economy.
How long it will last and what it all means remain open questions at the time of this episode, but Chip and Gini tackle what is known and how agencies should be thinking about what they should be doing. ALP 201: Should your agency hire specialists, generalists, or fractional team members?
FIR Podcast Network
08/14/23 • 20 min
Chip and Gini recently spoke about the challenge of small agencies seeking to hire unicorns who excel at everything. In this episode, they look at when you should be looking for specific kinds of hires and whether they should be specialists, generalists, or fractional support.
Knowing the level of expertise needed and understanding how much demand your agency will have for their time helps you to make a smarter decision about how to obtain the resources needed to serve clients and manage your business.
In some cases, you may want to hire a contractor with specific skills that you require but not with enough volume or consistency to justify hiring in-house. For those positions you do choose to fill with part- or full-time employees, you need to decide what level of expertise in which skills will give you the best value and help to meet your specific requirements.
