Finding Founders

Finding Founders

A podcast about vulnerability and entrepreneurship — learn from the life stories of founders 🚀, activists ✊, and even drug lords 💊 Our aim is to inspire you and let's face it... you aren't inspired when you hear about success. Real inspiration comes from hearing someone's lowest moment, and rising with their success. Using music, sfx, and voiceover, we interview the founders of companies, movements, and even drug cartels to reveal vulnerability so you can learn from victory. I’m your host, Samuel Donner, and together with my team we aim to inspire and educate a global community of leaders.

APEC’s influence on homelessness can most notably be seen from the increased sweeps the police are doing within the APEC zones. People are losing their valuables and have to be on the move. Javi works for the Coalition on Homelessness, which connects unhoused people with resources for permanent living solutions. As we go through alleyways that are usually heavily populated, we’ll discuss the city’s response to homelessness in relation to APEC and compare it to the resources the community actually needs.

Today, we’ll sit down and hear from Jacob Peters, co-founder of Launch House and Commsor, two community-led and data-driven startups. As a frequently uprooted army brat, Jacob prioritized fitting in with his peers. So, he dumbed himself down and hid his genuine interests, including math and LEGOs. He led a double life playing the part of a “cool kid” at school while secretly running a LEGO empire with the help of his family.

After suffering a traumatic brain injury, Jacob finally dropped the facade and followed his authentic passions. Jacob immersed himself in the world of data science and started creating internal incubators at JP Morgan. In his role, he used the networking skills he’d developed as a LEGO mogul and the emotional intelligence he’d gained as an undercover nerd to build an authentic data science community. This authentic community served as rocket fuel for Jacob’s entrepreneurial endeavors and would ultimately lead to his startup today: Launch House.

Today on the show we talk to Luciano Mazza, an international architect, and designer of H club in LA. The H.Club started as the brainchild of Paul Allen, global philanthropist and co-founder of a little company called Microsoft, and musician Dave Stewart. But Luciano, who’s been an architectural entrepreneur for the past couple decades, brought that idea to reality. Luciano currently is director of Hospitality Architecture at HKS Inc. in London, and his experience designing hotels and luxury resorts includes projects from the Four Seasons to Shangri-La. Luciano describes architecture as the balance between elegance and efficacy. But for Luciano, it’s those intimate, personal aspects of architecture that are most important. Luciano thinks deeply about the people he wants to serve, and the buildings he designs aim to guide emotional reflexes using space. Empathy is paramount to understand the emotional reflexes of various cultures, and in pursuit of this multi-cultural empathy, he’s worked everywhere from Los Angeles to London. Luciano has had an extensive career, and he’s indebted to the myriad of cities that helped to cultivate his creativity and empathy, but probably most impactful was the city where it all started. One of the most beautiful and storied cities in the world: the vibrant city of Mantua, Italy.

Laser eye surgery, a seemingly inconsequential, almost routine surgery, that in an instant turned into a nightmare. Sumit Ajwani, who had built a career creating films as head of production for a global ad agency in Canada, discovered he could no longer see. He was a wunderkind. His career was moving fast. He had just been appointed head of the ad agency at 23 years old. But this wouldn’t be the end of his story. Sumit would ultimately create a producer-led collaborative network called ‘Makers’ that would get involved with projects from giving bikes to kids in Ghana, building a Lego City inside a children’s hospital, and working with Habitat for Humanity. To date ‘Makers’ has 11,000 producers around the world in 173 countries. But the building of this collaborative future between creatives started actually before Sumit was born. It started with his father mailing a ring across an ocean over 40 years ago...

This is part 1 of the story of Chris Do, founder and CEO of The Futur. It may seem presumptive of Chris to name himself CEO of your future. But for so many, Chris may have at least some claim to the title. The Futur is an online education platform, dedicated to the mission of teaching one billion people how to be successful in a career they love. All too often, we segment professionals into those that utilize the right brain or use left brain. Artists and business people mix like oil and water, right? Well, that’s not the case for Chris. Chris sits at the nexus of the right and left brain. He employs his creativity, but also his ability to lead and organize. His ability to embody both sides of his brain shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. He has spent his whole life at the schism between ideologies, struggling to find a place where he fit in. He suffocated under the weight of the identities that forced upon him. His family fled war torn Vietnam to America and at school, he was the Vietnamese emigre who would never quite fit in. At home, he was a failure; he didn’t adhere to one of three professions deemed suitable by the immigrant model of success: a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. He would never quite fit in. But through years of inner turmoil, he learned to be comfortable forging his own path. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/finding-founders/support

So this episode is different from what we usually put out. It’s a live virtual summit on the Secrets of TikTok. It won’t have voiceover, music, or sound effects like our other episodes... but it should be pretty informative. Also if you are new here, I’d recommend listening to our recent episodes on Mac Davis and Immortality... some crazy stories in there!

Anyway, we spent a few months prepping for this event and we gathered together a highly qualified group panelists to speak to our audience. The event was a hit! We had almost 500 people RSVP and almost 300 people attend. I’ve been getting email after email and message after message asking if I’d post the full audio... so here it is.

But before we get into it, let me break down our panelists.

Here are the time codes and summaries for each panelist’s sections.

@ [0;01;51]

We’re starting with Nick and Jason who founded Popl. They launched their business with TikTok and gained over 1.5M+ followers in two months and grew their monthly revenue from 0 to over 60k!

@ [0;32;21]

Then we’ll move to Brian Freeman. Brian is the CEO & Founder of Heartbeat, the #1 TikTok Influencer Marketplace. He’s also a contributing writer at Forbes, Inc., MarketWatch, Entrepreneur, and numerous others.

@ [1;01;40]

Next we’ll talk to Marcel Salapa. Marcel is TikTok Lead at Movers+Shakers, a TikTok creative agency responsible for the #1 TikTok campaign in the world. With this campaign, they generated over 5 billion views and 3 million user generated videos.

@ [1;32;35]

Our final panelist is Dare. Dare (a.k.a Captaindare) is a versatile TikTok creator whose ingenious comedy skits skyrocketed him to success with over 800,000 followers and over 20 million likes. He recently had the honor of presenting the first ever Black History Summit for TikTok.

Without further ado, here is the summit, and we’ll hear from Nick and Jason of Popl first.
