Renowned technical analyst Katie Stockton, CMT is Founder and Managing Partner of Fairlead Strategies, LLC, an independent research firm. Additionally this year, she became lead portfolio manager of the Fairlead Tactical Sector ETF - $TACK. Her conservative and unbiased approach to markets has helped clients navigate volatility for 25 years and she has now translated that discipline into an investable strategy.
This month’s interview was really a masterclass in how to responsibly analyze markets – top down, multi-timeframes, quantifiable measures, bottom-up corroboration on sectors and individual securities all in a repeatable process. Dynamite takeaways for our listeners in every role of the investment industry. This month’s conversation takes listeners on a journey across three sets of market indicators: trend following, mean reverting and market internals. With each measure there is exact science in the computations of market statistics, but also nuance in how to interpret their message in the context of multiple timeframes and larger market regime shifts. Beyond the commonly used technical tools, Katie also employs ichimoku clouds and the TD Sequential and TD Combo tools from highly decorated market timer, Tom DeMark.
Listeners will understand the use of these and many other tools in the context of Katie’s systematic approach to analysis and money management. This month’s guest on Fill the Gap is a household name in the field of technical analysis – one of the most widely read market commentators of this generation and a role model to aspiring financial professionals around the globe. JC Parets, CMT is what you might call “an All-Star.” He has spent years within the community learning from the men and women of Wall St who discovered, engineered, and created the tools and methods we use today.

When he is not crushing grapes at Chateau Fibonacci or watching the Miami Dolphins crush rivals, JC and his many colleagues at All-Star Charts are ripping through thousands of charts to see the markets from every perspective. Their comprehensive cross-asset multi-timeframe perspective is at the forefront of what JC brings to the interview this month.

In the April episode of Fill the Gap, JC will discuss the emerging data sources made available on-chain and how DeFi terminology is the only difference between these new market internals and the data we’ve seen from traditional equity and futures exchanges for decades.

To kick off this month’s episode, we’ve brought the architect of the annual CMT Symposium for the past decade – Bill Kelleher, CMT, CFA who shares a bit about this year’s phenomenal conference, the impact this member community had on his own career, and some fond memories of a young JC Parets discussing the early days of FinTwit with Wall St. legends at the Symposium in 2013.

Ian McMillan, CMT, and his colleagues run an RIA in a less-than-traditional approach... They use technical analysis to participate in trends and limit downside risk. For clients who are used to being stuck in a diversified portfolio of passive holdings, the education process can be a paradigm shift.

In the March episode of Fill the Gap, Ian will discuss the challenges of non-trending markets, and the coaching his firm does with clients. Starting with the simple concept of a moving average cross, clients begin to understand the philosophy of trend following.

Ian does not mince words. Gamecocks 2023! And, markets are not efficient. Emotions and cognitive biases lead to poor investment decisions. The flip side of this is that they also create opportunities for those that have mastered investing without emotion. Ian’s podcast co-host and investing partner David Zarling, CMT developed a money management approach for identifying market leadership, risks, and price trends that was designed to consistently participate in themes of strength.

When he is not managing client money, tweeting market observations @the_chart_life, or leading the effort for financial literacy (https://whatisastockbook.com/), Ian is talking with David on their Podcast: The Weekly Trend.

Ian McMillan, CMT has been in the wealth management/RIA arena for 11 years. He currently serves as Market Technician at Client First Tax & Wealth Advisors. Prior to his role at Client First, Ian was a Senior Analyst based out of the Washington DC area. Ian spends a portion of his time consulting with other firms in the area as to how they can best incorporate Technical Analysis into their own practices and portfolio management strategies.

Ian graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. Ian then pursued his MBA at The Citadel, with a concentration in Asset Allocation.

Episode 6: Ralph Acampora, CMT

Fill The Gap: The Official Podcast of the CMT Association

06/11/21 • 65 min

The Godfather of Technical Analysis, Ralph Acampora, CMT joins Fill the Gap for a conversation about the history of markets, and market technicians. As the co-founder of the “MTA” in the late 1960s, Ralph’s passion for the discipline of technical market analysis has not waned a bit in his 50-year career on Wall Street.
Discussing long-term secular market trends and periods of extended market expansion, Ralph shares that we may be in a fifth “Mega Market” cycle. Comparing historical periods of great economic expansion, Ralph coined the term to describe post-war market rallies in his book “The Fourth Mega Market” which he penned in the 1990s. As the world slowly begins to emerge from the COVID pandemic, the massive injection of funding for research to fight the virus will likely be commercialized in the period ahead, helping extend a global bull market over the coming years.
Ralph opens up about his lifelong passion for historical study, his experience computing indicators and plotting charts by hand in the windowless “War Rooms” of the 1960s and 70s, and gaining direct advice from veteran technical analysts such as Ralph Rotnem and Ken Ward in his early career. These were the giants upon whose shoulders the technical community was built. Ralph references his personal Chart Museum, as well as other moments when the CMT Association library played a key role in expanding global finance knowledge.
Ralph’s riveting stories about his accidental start in finance, as well as the contributions he’s made to the discipline of technical analysis over the last five decades, provide critical insight and context for market technicians operating in today’s digital-first environment. To better understand the concepts he references, we recommend you review the supplemental resources accompanying this episode using this link: go.cmtassociation.org/ftge6

As the discipline of technical analysis has evolved so have the practitioners. Episode #4 of Fill the Gap features one of Wall Street’s current icons of market research – Jeff deGraaf, CMT, CFA who is the founder and Chairman of Renaissance Macro Research LLC. In this interview, Jeff dives deep into the quantifiable data-driven approach he and the RenMac team leverage towards understanding markets. Jeff reveals some of the spurious pitfalls of data science, how RenMac separates signal from noise, and why their team always returns to price before making any investment recommendation.

Jeff has been one of Wall Street’s most influential macro-based analysts over the last 20-years, consistently ranked by I.I. magazine since 2002, and a member of Institutional Investor’s exclusive Research Hall of Fame. Prior to founding RenMac, Jeff cut his teeth at Merrill Lynch in the 1990s, then Lehman Brothers for 10 years where he served on the firm’s investment policy committee as a Managing Director. In early 2007, Jeff moved to ISI as an Executive Managing Director, also serving on the firm’s management committee and heading the firm’s investment policy committee.

It's time to turn up the Volume! Our special guest this month is one of the most prolific contributors to the technical analysis body of knowledge today and arguably the world's foremost expert on volume analysis. Buff Dormeier, CMT asserts that volume - when used correctly - is the most important factor in any portfolio manager's toolkit.
We dig deep into the intricacies of volume data and how it informs the message of the market vis a vis price. We got a glimpse of the painstaking efforts Buff takes to decompose the reported data sets and reconstruct cap-weighted and dollar-weighted volume for his analysis at the index, sector and single security levels. But most importantly, Buff shared how he thinks about managing investments not just with offense and defensive strategy, but with "special teams" to capture the explosive moves at key market turning points. You've probably guessed, but volume is the key factor in making those all-important decisions.
Our favorite quote from one of Buff's recent presentations was: "If Price action is the DNA of the market, then volume is the RNA of Price" which helps decode and activate the critical information we can glean from price action.
Enjoy Episode #35 of Fill the Gap with award winning author, magnanimous advocate, and Chief Technical Analyst at Kingsview Investment Partners, Buff Dormeier, CMT.
