Episode 18: Rusty Vanneman, CMT, CFA
Fill The Gap: The Official Podcast of the CMT Association
06/10/22 • 57 min
Thirty year veteran of the financial markets, decorated investment manager, leader of investment teams, and communicator of investment strategies joins us this month for a chat amongst old friends.
Classmates at Babson and former colleagues at both Thomson Financial and Fidelity Investments, Dave and Rusty can practically end each other’s sentences, so this month’s discussion and debate takes us in many directions, including:
- Why do investors of high-performing portfolio managers fail to achieve the same returns as the fund?
- Why is communication of the strategy so critically important, and how can it be done better?
- Does “Value” work? And, what fundamental drivers help value shares outperform in inflationary regimes?
- Why is this Radiohead tune Rusty’s chosen walkout song?
- Competitive Stationary Rowing is a real thing?
Rusty is a host of Orion’s The Weighing Machine podcast and authored the book “Higher Calling: A Guide to Helping Investors Achieve Their Goals.” He also serves as the Chief Investment Strategist for Orion Advisor Solutions.
Rusty was such a fun guest to interview because he is always candid, full of energy, and has delivered excellence in every stage of his career. Currently, Rusty delivers relevant market-and platform-related content that supports deeper, more engaging conversations with advisors and investors. He is passionate about educating investors to help deliver more favorable outcomes. And as a successful fund manager himself, Rusty excels in identifying new investment offerings to meet growing marketplace demand.

Episode 17: Laura Martin, CMT, CFA
Fill The Gap: The Official Podcast of the CMT Association
05/06/22 • 54 min
Timing is everything in the world of technical analysis, and this month we had the distinct honor of bringing the exceptionally talented Laura Martin, CMT, CFA onto Fill the Gap the very day that $NFLX dropped through the floor.
Darling of the "stay at home" trade Netflix had buy ratings from 39 other sector analysts. Laura made a massive contrarian call based on her combined technical and fundamental understanding of the markets and her covered stocks.
This powerful endorsement of the technical toolkit covers the "micro" applications to individual securities, but also Laura's attention to the "macro" environment since enrolling in the CMT Program nearly a decade ago. Intermarket relationships and historical studies have taken a front seat in 2022 as the paradigm of growth-focused investing has shifted.

Episode 16: JC Parets, CMT
Fill The Gap: The Official Podcast of the CMT Association
04/06/22 • 77 min
This month’s guest on Fill the Gap is a household name in the field of technical analysis – one of the most widely read market commentators of this generation and a role model to aspiring financial professionals around the globe. JC Parets, CMT is what you might call “an All-Star.” He has spent years within the community learning from the men and women of Wall St who discovered, engineered, and created the tools and methods we use today.
When he is not crushing grapes at Chateau Fibonacci or watching the Miami Dolphins crush rivals, JC and his many colleagues at All-Star Charts are ripping through thousands of charts to see the markets from every perspective. Their comprehensive cross-asset multi-timeframe perspective is at the forefront of what JC brings to the interview this month.
In the April episode of Fill the Gap, JC will discuss the emerging data sources made available on-chain and how DeFi terminology is the only difference between these new market internals and the data we’ve seen from traditional equity and futures exchanges for decades.
To kick off this month’s episode, we’ve brought the architect of the annual CMT Symposium for the past decade – Bill Kelleher, CMT, CFA who shares a bit about this year’s phenomenal conference, the impact this member community had on his own career, and some fond memories of a young JC Parets discussing the early days of FinTwit with Wall St. legends at the Symposium in 2013.
Enjoy episode #16 with our special guest JC Parets, CMT!

Episode 5: Frank Teixeira, CMT, CFA
Fill The Gap: The Official Podcast of the CMT Association
05/07/21 • 79 min
Partner, Portfolio Manager, and Director of Technical Research at Wellington Management for over 20 years, Frank Teixeira brings his unmatched insight to addressing what it takes to navigate institutional pools of capital through multiple market cycles. Episode #5 of Fill the Gap delivers a first-hand account of the often-opaque world of professional money management.
Exploring the difference between the emotional “pain management” that many investors practice, and a repeatable process of risk management, Frank shares personal successes and challenges that are at times surprising, but always refreshingly candid and instructive . Without the theoretical jargon of cognitive behavior or trading psychology, listeners will hear the visceral account of how we as investors learn lessons – good or bad – from every experience in the markets. “Be aware of what lesson you are learning” advises Frank, and remove words like “regret” from the lexicon.
For veteran asset managers who have the passion to continue refining their process, or anyone considering a career in finance, this episode of Fill the Gap provides essential insight into the discipline of trend-following and momentum investing.

Episode 4: Jeff deGraaf, CMT, CFA
Fill The Gap: The Official Podcast of the CMT Association

As the discipline of technical analysis has evolved so have the practitioners. Episode #4 of Fill the Gap features one of Wall Street’s current icons of market research – Jeff deGraaf, CMT, CFA who is the founder and Chairman of Renaissance Macro Research LLC. In this interview, Jeff dives deep into the quantifiable data-driven approach he and the RenMac team leverage towards understanding markets. Jeff has been one of Wall Street’s most influential macro-based analysts over the last 20-years, consistently ranked by I.I. magazine since 2002, and a member of Institutional Investor’s exclusive Research Hall of Fame. In early 2007, Jeff moved to ISI as an Executive Managing Director, also serving on the firm’s management committee and heading the firm’s investment policy committee.

Episode 23: Atul Suri & David Lundgren CMT, CFA | Live from the APAC Summit 2022
Fill The Gap: The Official Podcast of the CMT Association
11/18/22 • 75 min
Fill The Gap Live: Investment Management Trends at an Inflection Point
Interview recorded Live at CMT APAC Summit 2022 in Mumbai India on Nov 5, 2022
In this live installment of Fill the Gap, the official podcast of the CMT Association, global money management veterans share how they use technical analysis in their trend following investment process for market outperformance over the long run.
With front row seats to the evolution of equity markets for more than three decades, Atul Suri and David Lundgren, CMT, CFA have learned many lessons managing returns over multiple market cycles. They will discuss the strategies used in their respective funds and unpack the objectives of trend following including how to identify, engage, and stay in trending securities by utilizing the tools of technical analysis.
As an investment style, trend following has existed for a very long time. Some 200 years ago, the classical economist David Ricardo’s imperative to “cut short your losses” and “let your profits run on” suggested an attention to trends. Early in the last century, the legendary American trader Jesse Livermore stated explicitly that the “big money was not in the individual fluctuations but in ... sizing up the entire market and its trend.”
Understanding that the market is efficient, but also trends, confirms how technical analysis can help investors uncover attractive investment opportunities. Leading, coincident, and lagging indicators of trend change as well as Relative Strength will give the audience a clear perspective on how they might incorporate technical analysis into their own investment process.
