Figuring It Out - Hidden toxins and how they impact our health
play

09/05/19 • 65 min

In this episode, I talk sat down with Rhea Mehta.

Let me tell you. Rhea is one smart (and inspiring) cookie. She’s a molecular toxicologist - a word I can barely pronounce!

I love Rhea because not only is she so smart, but she’s relatable. We all have a story, and I was so inspired by how she’s using her own to make a difference and inspire others.

She is a healthcare innovator and the CEO of Bowhead Health, an encrypted health wallet and data sharing platform that enables users to become the managers and vendors of their own data. Rhea has a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Waterloo, a PhD in Molecular Toxicology and Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Toronto, and is a certified health coach with over 10 years of experience in scientific research and integrative healthcare practice. Rhea also has several years experience in community design and co-creation. She co-founded Reset, a Toronto-based adult summer camp and digital detox and is the founder of Global Smoothie Day, a movement to inspire health ownership. She also serves as an ambassador of Sandbox, a mobile society of trailblazers using technology and conversation to create a better world. Rhea currently sits on the industry advisory board of McGill’s Masters of Management in Analytics program and is a contributing author of the Huffington Post and Mind Body Green.

We talk about:

  • What the hell molecular toxicology is
  • The impact of the standard american diet
  • How hitting rock bottom with her health is when she made the shift
  • How our daily behaviors impact our wellness
  • Bridging the gap and creating a dialogue between Eastern and Western medicine
  • Getting back to nature
  • And how her company puts patients in the drivers seat of their health by giving them control over their data

Money - whether you’re good with your money or feeling like you could use an electric shock reminder every time you open up Amazon and regardless of whether you make a million or 10 thousand, it’s a tricky and sometimes sensitive topic.

There’s a lot of shame in not being able to “keep up with the Jones’s” and feeling like a “have not.”

And most of the time -- it rarely feels abundant.

Etiquette tells us not to talk about it. Unless of course you live in NYC where one-upping one another on how much rent to space ratio is par for the course and how could you possibly save

Well, today, right here, right now my guest Erica and I are breaking that taboo.

Erica Gellerman is a CPA, MBA, personal finance writer, and founder of The Worth Project: a weekly money newsletter you actually want to read. Her work has been featured on Forbes, Money, Business Insider, The Everygirl, The Everymom, and Lifehacker. When she's not writing about personal finance you can find Erica exploring Europe from her temporary home base in London...soon to be Hawaii, which we discuss.

She says “you don't have to choose between being good with money and living a good life.”

This really resonated with me because sometimes it feels like in order to follow all of the money and investing rules we see online, we should be putting all of our pennies away for retirement and living in a dark cave.

This was such a lively conversation with Erica - we barely realized we started...note the abrupt start. We really honed in on how strong value system can help you manage your money effectively - this was something that I got really clear on when I was unemployed. You can tell a lot about someone’s values by looking at their bank account.

We also talk about:

  • How gaining clarity can help you become empowered in your choices to do what’s best for you.
  • Why honesty is the best policy when dealing with comparison in financesx
  • The three questions to help you figure out what you want to do with your life!
  • Finding your pivot points for making big change in your lifex
  • Navigating social situations and friendships when you’re in different financial situations.
  • Evaluating how we spend our time so we can spend it more efficiently.
  • How to create abundance when you feel broke.
  • Getting the most happiness out of every dollar spent.
  • Tactical solutions to manage debt repayment, create an enjoyable spending plan.

Figuring It Out - Overcoming Fear of Death to Enhance Our Life
play

07/18/19 • 62 min

But what if we could enhance the quality of our life today by confronting our own mortality and shifting the way we think about death?

Death or dying may feel dark and strikes up a mix of emotions for many of us.

There’s the fear of it happening; the anxiety of the unknown; and sadness for those that we’ve lost.

After my conversation with today’s guest Mary Jones, I’ve been thinking a lot more about how I think about death and how I want to leave the world. This process has helped me reflect on my own values and identify the things that are really, truly important to me.

Mary Kelly Jones is the Director of Family Support Services for Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley in Potsdam New York. With over 25 years’ experience at Hospice, Mary manages Hospice Chaplains, Social Workers, Volunteer Manager and Bereavement Staff. Mary is passionate about educating Hospice staff and the St. Lawrence County community in all matters related to end of life.

She has written over 30 grief publications for hospice families and community. She has served as a member of the Professional Education Committee for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization.

In addition to her role at Hospice, Mary is an adjunct instructor at SUNY Potsdam in the Public Health and Human Performance department. Mary has taught Death & Dying, both fall and spring semesters, for the last twelve years. Mary also serves as the chair of the St. Lawrence County Suicide Awareness Coalition and currently chairs the St. Lawrence County Community Service Board.

Mary and I talk about:

  • How you fundamentally shift as a person being in the room when someone is near the end of life.
  • How changing the way we think about death can help us heal and die well.
  • How Hospice as opposed to the traditional medical system focuses on the quality of life instead of trying to lengthen their life as patients near the end.
  • That death is inevitable so instead of trying to stop death we can focus on enhancing our lives.
  • Why there’s no right way to grieve except to make sure that you do.
  • How a death and dying course taught a group of college kids what it means to live.
  • Four simple phrases—“Please forgive me,” “I forgive you,” “Thank you,” and “I love you”—carry enormous power to mend and nurture our relationships and inner lives.
  • And how our legacies and the legacies of the ones we love will always be carried on.

She candidly shares her story and experiences with trauma, mental health and body image with her students and audience online. She's also the co-founder of a wellness events business, The GOOD Fest, which hosts 1 day wellness festivals to empower and inspire 400+ women around the country. Kate's writing and teaching have been featured in mindbodygreen, Yoga Digest, YogiApproved and The Fullest.

Kate’s currently working on a retreat Conscious Creators with Ava Johanna and Revamp Retreats as well as my conscious business mentorship program for women in wellness.

During the show we talk about:
