When the battle of Okinawa was over, almost a quarter of a million people had lost their lives, making it by far the bloodiest US battle of the Pacific. The horror of the battle ultimately determined President Truman’s choice to use atomic bombs in August 1945.

55 Les Rutherford interview - Lancaster bomb aimer, WW2 history

Les Rutherford was part of the rear-guard defence of Dunkirk in 1940. He escaped to England in a most novel fashion and later volunteered for the Royal Air Force, becoming a bomb aimer on WWII Lancasters. He completed 23 operations with 50 Squadron from RAF Skellingthorpe but was shot down by a fighter on his 24th operation. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III, the location of the famed Great Escape.
