Femme Hive - How to pivot in life
play

11/18/20 • 33 min

As college students and young professionals we oftentimes think that either the major we choose in school or our first full-time job will define our professional trajectory for the rest of our lives. There is this self-inflicted burden among us young ambitious people setting an unrealistic expectation that we have to have everything figured out by the time we graduate college or within the first few years of our young professional life.

Loretta Falcone is the living and breathing testament that we actually do not have to have everything figured out. Loretta is a NASA scientist and is currently planning NASA's first robotic mission to the moon (casual!). She was also part of the team that discovered the correct rotation of the planet Uranus, which baffled the scientific community at the time. From working for NASA to being a former ballerina, living in Italy, being a full-time mom, and TEDx speaker, Loretta has been reinventing herself over and over again throughout her life.

On this episode, we explore the importance of humility, vulnerability, and believing in yourself. Loretta shares how she helped doctors identify the rare disease of her son and how she was able to overcome her fear of space. One of the biggest take-aways: Let go of your ego!

Make sure to listen to Loretta's TEDx talk at Berkeley.

We live in a society that has largely normalized the medical management of women's hormones. Most doctors are very quick to prescribe hormonal birth control as remedy for any hormonal condition (PMS symptoms, heavy periods, acne, etc.) without properly educating their patients about the potential risks and side effects.

On this episode, our host Thamina is joined by Women's Health Expert Megan Haralampou, better known as The Biomedical Naturopath. Megan's purpose in life is to help women understand their menstrual cycles, hormones, and alternatives to hormonal contraception.

Megan criticizes the severe lack of understanding about female hormones and the risks associated with hormonal birth control such as increased risk of osteoporosis. Many of her clients in their 30s and 40s that were on the pill for an extensive period of time now have the bones of a 60-year old. And that's just one example.

Megan wants women to understand why our period is actually important as fertility is not just about making babies, it's so much more than that and it is frightening how little we know. We need better education, especially for teenage women, so they feel more empowered about their menstrual cycles to be able to make educated decisions about their own bodies - instead of experiencing shame, guilt, gaslighting, and serious health consequences because we live in a society that is built for men.

If you've ever been on hormonal birth control, are currently on it, or are considering getting on it, this episode is an absolute must-listen. Your body will thank you later!

Femme Hive - How to be happy

“I just want to be happy.” Raise your hand if you have either heard someone say this before or if you yourself have expressed this wish to those around you. Being happy is a very valid goal to have in life and on this episode we are exploring why most of us aren’t there yet.

To help us uncover some happiness myths, we are joined by Stephanie Harrison, Founder & CEO of The New Happy, a company with the mission to redefine happiness. A former Deloitte consultant and Product Marketing Manager at LinkedIn, Stephanie used to listen to society’s narrative about the things that we should do in order to be happier and she was really surprised and disappointed when that didn’t work. She then went on to earn her Master’s in Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania to further research the concept of happiness.

Today, Stephanie shares with us why most of us are blocking ourselves from finding true happiness by following the “Old Happy” cultural narratives and why these narratives are particularly cruel to women. Stephanie believes that if we as a society shifted our mindsets towards the scientifically proven “New Happy" approach, we would be able to create a world of equality, justice, safety, and joy where everyone would be much happier.

You can subscribe to The New Happy Podcast here and sign up for Stephanie’s weekly newsletter on The New Happy website.

Can you imagine a life where going blind or passing out regularly from excruciating pain is a frequent occurrence? Can you imagine sitting in work meetings while experiencing levels of pain that are comparable to the pain men experience during a heart attack?

When it comes to female health, women experience guilt, shame, and gaslighting every single day because we live in a society that is built for men. On this week's episode, we are joined by Lena Klein, Customer Success Manager at LinkedIn and endometriosis patient who bravely and vulnerably shares her horrific experiences with her disorder, from years of being undiagnosed to frightening challenges in her day-to-day life. Lena shares some invaluable tips for women who are facing similar health issues.

1 in 10 women suffer from endometriosis and it is one of the most common causes of infertility. We also talk about the stigma around menstruation and why we need to unlearn that and start having open conversations about the most natural parts of human life.

Our host Thamina knows exactly what it means to be a generalist who used to think that her "soft" skills weren't valuable compared to her STEM friends' math and engineering talent. Last week, the US Supreme Court kicked off hearings that could lead to the - inexplicit but effective - overturning of the infamous Roe vs. Wade ruling from 1973 that made abortions a constitutional right. With new, extreme abortion bans being introduced across many US states - most recently in Texas - the highly politicized debate between pro-life and pro-choice supporters has never been more polarized.

On this episode, our host Thamina - a vocal pro-choice supporter - sheds some light on this ongoing debate and shares some sound bites from the recent protests in Washington DC.
