Feeling Seen

Jordan Crucchiola, Maximum Fun

On Feeling Seen, writer and general enthusiast Jordan Crucchiola invites filmmakers, writers, comedians, and artists to discuss the movie characters that made them "feel seen." It's about that instant when a person connects to a piece of art so deeply that they see themselves reflected in it. Every week Jordan gabs it up with a guest about those magical moments when they were watching a film and realized, "That's me!" It's an informative, funny, and comforting show about our intimate relationship with movies, the impact they have on our lives, and how they influence our art.

Feeling Seen - Midsommar with Writer Emily St. James
play

11/11/21 • 46 min

It is the inaugural episode of the Feeling Seen podcast, and we’re starting things off with a BANG. We have writer and podcaster Emily St. James (Vox, The A.V. Club, Arden Podcast) on to talk about seeing herself in the character of Dani from Ari Aster’s ‘Midsommar.’ She discusses how Florence Pugh’s character finds community within a circle of women, and how that touched Emily as she was on her journey of coming out as trans. Plus, Emily writes a little fan fiction about Dani’s character after the events of ‘Midsommar.’ And in the final segment ‘One Quick Thing Before I Go,’ Jordan discusses what does and does not qualify as “Girl-Boss Action Cinema.”

The creative force behind the documentary ‘The Problem with Apu,’ comedian Hari Kondabolu, is on the show this week. Hari discusses a composite of media in which he saw parts of himself in growing up, but never the full picture. Here are just a few of the titles mentioned – Harold & Kumar, Office Space, the comedian Stewart Lee, and the BBC show Goodness Gracious Me. But that only scratches the surface. Plus, at the end of the program, Jordan elaborates on the need for better video game movies like ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.’

Feeling Seen - Traci Thomas on 'Gone with the Wind'
play

01/31/25 • 47 min

Traci Thomas is the creator and host of the critically acclaimed literary podcast The Stacks, where Traci chats with an array of guests about the books we love and loathe, the impact reading has on our lives, and the way the written word shapes culture. This week, creative mediums collide and find common ground. Traci joins Feeling Seen to talk historical fictions, unlikeable female characters, and Vivien Leigh's portrayal of the tenacious Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 historical romance drama Gone with the Wind. Plus, Traci and Jordan take to the stars to boast about their respective astrological signs. Can Leo season come any sooner?

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about Companion. A new trailer for the film brings a new twist!

What do the little boy in HIT THE ROAD (2021). the dad in CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (2016) and the nearly-hopeless old driver in TASTE OF CHERRY (1997) have in common? Ask actor Bobby Naderi. He and Jordan find the common thread of a nomad lifestyle and a reckless spirit across these three films, as they track the path that led Bobby from Tehran all the way to his latest role in THE BETTER SISTER.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about HONEY DON'T!, Tricia Cooke's follow up to DRIVE AWAY DOLLS.

Feeling Seen - Akela Cooper on 'Demon Knight'
play

01/12/23 • 55 min

If you needed proof that '90s movies were built different, look no further than TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT. It's a practical effect-driven spinoff of a horror comedy anthology from a Black director, sprinkled with bare-breasted ladies, centered around a mixed-race cast, set in the Southwest, and starring Billy Zane as an ooze-filled demon and Jada Pinkett as a quietly brooding Final Girl. It's a whole moment in horror history, and a young Akela Cooper -- the same Akela Cooper who would go on to write M3GAN and MALIGNANT -- saved up over $40 to buy it on VHS after her parents missed taking her to see in in theaters.

All that, plus some flowers for Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh as we do our part to push for EEAAO for Everything this awards season.

Feeling Seen - Parvesh Cheena on The Penguin & Dr. Evil
play

01/18/24 • 52 min

Star of stage and screen, film and television, voice over and live action, Parvesh Cheena's list of credits is expansive -- and you've almost certainly seen or heard him in SOMETHING (Barbershop? Outsourced? Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? Mythic Quest? The Mandalorian?). Parvesh has carved out a place for himself as a character actor -- a position that has at times been a little lonely, and a little strange. As for seeing himself on screen? Even as a kid, he looked to some of the biggest, weirdest characters of them all: Danny Devito's Penguin in BATMAN RETURNS and Mike Myers as Dr. Evil in the AUSTIN POWERS movies.

Feeling Seen - Eureka on ‘Never Been Kissed’
play

12/23/21 • 48 min

This week we are joined by the bigger-than-life personality that is the magnificent Eureka. You may know them from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ or their new show on HBO called ‘We’re Here.’ But they are gracing our show this week to discuss Josie “Grossie” Geller from the classic Drew Barrymore film, ‘Never Been Kissed.’ Eureka discusses how they’ve had to “customize” every aspect of their life – both physically and emotionally – and how they actually find comfort in the discomfort. Plus, they talk about their deep love for Drew Barrymore, and how high school was actually a really lovely time for them. And then at the end of the show, Jordan’s going to talk about ‘The Matrix Resurrections.’

You can watch We’re Here on HBO Max now.

Feeling Seen - Drea Clark on 'Muriel's Wedding'
play

10/13/22 • 52 min

Indie producer, film festival programmer, and fellow Maximum Fun movie podcaster Drea Clark called dibs on Muriel Heslop before the first episode of Feeling Seen ever aired. The movie has been a favorite since its 1994 release, and while Drea doesn't relate to every aspect of Toni Collette's iconic "terrible" wannabe bride, Muriel's journey to self-acceptance and growth spoke to Drea, both then and now.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about another story of the power of friendship...M3GAN.

Feeling Seen - Janet Varney on ‘Heavenly Creatures’
play

05/05/22 • 52 min

When MaxFun’s own Janet Varney saw Peter Jackson’s HEAVENLY CREATURES as a teen, she didn’t let the movie’s whole matricide thing keep her from feeling seen. The daydreamy, obsessive devotion of a young Kate Winslet and a young Melanie Lynskey for one another was what really stood out. She and Jordan unpack all of that, plus talk about queer murderers in film, the “danger” of women alone together, the importance of valuing teenage feelings, and much more!

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about Peter Jackson’s (other) early work!

It’s the final days of the MaxFunDrive! Please join our ranks! maximumfun.org/join

Feeling Seen - Michael Jai White on 'Rich Man, Poor Man'
play

01/13/22 • 45 min

This week's guest: Michael Jai White. He's an actor, a martial artist. He played the title character in the original live action Spawn movie. He played the title character in Black Dynamite. The title character in Tyson, the Mike Tyson biopic.

Or maybe you saw him in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? Or Insecure? In those True North inserts?

He's a big deal, a true action hero who's always dreamed of doing comedy, and we're thrilled to talk with Michael about the movies that made him who he is, including the TV miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man.

Michael Jai White's latest film is called The Commando, you can check out the trailer here, watch it on VOD or maybe even in a theater near you.

Plus, before we go: Critics loved Birds of Prey, the Harley Quinn movie. At the box office, though, the movie was cursed with a release just before the pandemic made its way around the world. Jordan makes the case for why it's time for this bisexual catastrophe to get a sequel.
