FAMILY HISTORY DRAMA : Unbelievable True Stories

FAMILY HISTORY DRAMA : Unbelievable True Stories

Travis M. Heaton

When we look over someone else’s life, we are amazed, we are awed, we are emotionally bedazzled at the ordeals they survived and even thrived through. Their life was normal...for them. As your crazy adventures in life will be for you. Part of your ability to be emotionally bedazzled by the life of another is the capacity to FEEL them as they might have experienced their circumstances. They want their lives to be learned from and appreciated for whatever value you can extract of it. Please don’t let the lives of your ancestors be only a name on a family tree or a blip on the radar that fades with each generational reset. I’m gonna tell you a little secret...there is a profound superpower to be had in making the “Dia de los Muertos” an everyday occasion. Read your ancestor stories, share them with your children. Remember them. Feel them. Learn from them. Because History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes.

Life without structure leads to trouble. How many times will we be told to “choose our friends wisely”? Bub Meeks lived hard and fast, and paid the price for it. Life in the late 1800’s was tempting for folks who didnt have the patience for working and saving. So they took balloon withdrawals anytime they were low on cash.

From the life and times of Heber Jesse Meeks. While living a prominent and involved life at the turn of the 19th century Heber dealt with the nature of old horses, driving new fangled automobiles, and teaching children how to subtly but firmly deal with troublesome neighbors. Whether its devotion to spouse, love of family, or commitment to country, God, and small town traditions, Heber Jesse Meeks lived it to the fullest.

The Journey from Nebraska to the Territory of Deseret was an adventurously long one. And in the early days of settling the Wild West, there was never a destination. The only place you could permanently call home was your final resting place. From Conestogas to Cavalry, from rivers to mountains, from Chiefs to Governors, from freezing winters to striking summers, from Sasquatch attacks to buried Mummies, from hidden treasure to Egyptian hieroglyphs, and from settling the Sanpete area to sipping sop with snakes. You wont want to miss this tale. Too true to be believed.

Loving one another is Understanding One Another. I’ve been reminded of this recently from a lifelong friend. Her and I don’t agree on everything. And to be honest with you, i look forward to disagreeing with her. And I say that For selfish reasons, because she is gently yet firmly opinionated, and I get a different perspective. Usually because, out of lack of experiences I’m ignorant. We don’t have to agree with each other to understand each other. Understanding creates respect beyond congruent opinions.
I was reminded this week of a fav quote of mine from Marie Forleo, who said “Clarity comes from engagement and not thought.”

We gain understanding of others in active engagement with them. Learning of them, considering them, and in a healthy setting, being present with them.
It is unfortunate that we ofttimes wait until we hear a eulogy before we start applying gentle consideration instead of church pew judgment? The gift of losing someone can be really life altering, and can raise your spiritual and emotional frequency to some very healthy levels.
As my friend Russ Nelson once said “We are born to die, and we die to live.”
I hope we strive to fully FEEL OUR OATS by understanding others a little more. I feel more complete when I am dismantled by humbling experiences and then reassembled by the considerate feelings of love that are inclusive of grief & sorrow.
If we are fortunate we are made DIFFERENT by the depth experiences.

The best way to celebrate another’s life is to learn from it. Become a better you because of them. If we aren’t able to glean something from one another, are we truly friends or are we just seriously not paying attention?

The strategy of planning, the thrill of the heist, pulling your hat down over your ears during the galloping getaway, and the adrenaline of lining your pockets with nare a few moments worth of actual work. For those of you who might have been a little titillated by the previous story, this is what Mr. Harvey would refer to as “the rest of that story”, and it ain’t perty. In the final years of Bub’s “Flash-Bang” life he quickly realized the high cost of low living.

1-Live out your childhood daydreams...as long as they are legal and not life threatening. Be careful with the Karate Kid reenactments, Someone could get hurt, Right Ben? Sorry about that kick on the trampoline. I got way too much into character.

2-Really?!? Once again with the skinny dipping Travis? I dont even recall bringing a swimming suit. Doesn’t seem one was even needed. Shuck it, swim it, lay in the warm sand, air dry, unshuck, and apply a lot of lotion to your dry summer skin. I just remember how soothing the lotion was when it stung my dry chapped skin. Now that was Intensive Care at its finest.

3-As iggy once said “Your future is determined by your past, so be careful what you do in your past.” Cautiously and thoughtfully conduct your life. Trying to retain your old glory days could end up ending you. Clean out the attic of your life. Dont be an Uncle Rico, let it go. You ain’t all that.

Preserving YOUR identity in a relationship and marriage is important, because if you change who you are, you have changed who they initially fell in love with. And then what? Yet along with preserving the YOU in a WE scenario, I have never heard it said that a relationship or marriage didn’t work out because there was too much we, us, our, and togetherness. If those aspects cause a dissipation of the relationship, its the love that is crumbling and fracturing under the unproven foundation of how VITAL it is that we LIKE & ENJOY each other BEFORE we choose to “fall in love”.

Remember..... Time+Experience=Relationship.

Trust the process.

Use the process.

Engage the process.
