Along with undeniable talent and a love for the water, another thread connects the world’s top surfers: a supportive family figure. Host Peter Flax, editor-in-chief of the Red Bulletin magazine, takes us on the wild journey of generational athleticism in the new podcast series, Family Crest. “Family dynamics are always fascinating, and, in this case, there’s a lot to chew on,” says Flax. From Hawaii to Daytona Beach and big waves to short boards, this series explores the sacrifices, world travel and familial network behind some of today’s most competitive surfers.

From SUP to foiling, Kai Lenny is a Renaissance man in the surf game. However, Kai’s parents can attest to how being multifaceted can also work against you, as it did for Kai in the early days of his pro career. Nowadays, Kai and his brother Ridge are chasing big waves together—and big business. This episode charts the family unit behind one of the most dynamic surfers in the water and how the biggest wave has yet to come for Kai Lenny. Kolohe's dad and early coach, Dino Andino, is also a well-known surfer who competed in the nascent era of professional surfing.
