In episode 6 of the Fade To Black podcast, critics Amon Warmann, Clarisse Loughrey and Hanna Flint give their screen, stream or skip verdict on Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer superhero comedy caper Thunder Force, Groundhog Day-esque rom-com Palm Springs, and indie drama Sound of Metal.

PLUS in this week’s HOT TAKE we continue the conversation started this week on Twitter about what exactly makes a horror a horror? Journalist Elle Hunt made the mistake of asking tweeters to settle an argument she was having: is Alien a sci-fi or horror? She believes it’s a sci-fi because “Horror is predicated on the fear of the other, the unfamiliar in the world as we know it – space, we already don't know it.” Of course, because social media is rarely the forum to have calm, friendly conversations about movies without it descending into chaos, Elle was met with a barrage of patronising and toxic abuse from the far reaches of film twitter. We hate to see that but we do find the question Elle posed interesting and give our take on the subject.
