Facing Fear - Facing Fear: I Have Breast Cancer
play

10/27/21 • 48 min

I've unexpectedly decided to return to the podcast from my 100 day break because I'm about to start a facing fear journey unlike any before... I've been diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer. It really doesn't get anymore "facing fear" than that.
I was diagnosed on October 14. Essentially overnight, I went from a normal AF human, to someone now associated with the cancer community. I have the "best of the worst news" and will survive this. But for now, it's just the start of a journey through completely uncharted territory and I'm not sure where it's going to take me.
Turns out, podcasting is a cathartic way for me to process my feelings. So here goes.
P.S. - October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Please, on my behalf, make it a routine to check yourself out, remind your family to do so, eat some damn kale and go learn your family medical history.

This episode is sooooo special. I share some of the great/funny messages I've received and a few gifts including a homemade video and song a friend wrote for me (insert crying emoji). Life will throw some crazy shit at you, but it's your support group who are going to lift you up when you're down. And that's been the case for me.
Throughout these weeks as I absorb all the love, prayers and support, I can't help to think of others in a serious situation like mine who don't have the support I do. This episode is for them. If you know of someone who needs some love right now, send them this episode. Let's spread it around the world, like a digital "get well soon" card.

Over the next two weeks, I’ve put together bits and pieces of the stories from guests on this show who have shared their experiences on being Black in this country. Their willingness and vulnerability brings me back to the main mission of this show which is to provide a platform for those who may not be able to tell their stories otherwise. And of course, to hear how they’ve faced and conquered fear along the way.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THE FACING FEAR PODCAST? I'M GLAD YOU ASKED!

  • WEAR & SHARE - Visit facingfearwithsara.com/merch to shop the carefully selected and designed merchandise to remind and encourage you to face fear wherever you go in life.
  • MAKE A DONATION - 100% of the contributions provided go towards purchasing tools to grow, develop and advance Facing Fear, giving anyone in the world the opportunity to face fear.

Most cancer merch is cheugy. There, I said it.

Thanks to the expertise from my designer, Mariah, an idea from my BFF, Maggie, and my determination to get shit done, BOOM, badass cancer merch was born.

Today I share the behind the scenes of why I created merch for this community I've unwillingly joined.

This is for me, and you... and for my cheerleaders. And for my loved ones worrying everyday. And my friends checking their phones for updates. And finally, for all the survivor sisters I've met, and those I have yet to meet.

If we're going to join the cancer community, we might as well look badass while doing so.
