Eye on the Storm - Episode 150: St. John's Wins The Big East Tournament
play

03/17/25 • 34 min

The dream season continues. For the first time in 25 years, St. John's has won the Big East Tournament. An incredible show of resiliency and fight to beat Butler, Marquette and Creighton in three straight days. This team proved to be tough, proved that their style can carry them through these tournament settings. Behind an incredible performance from RJ Luis Jr. on Saturday night, anchored by Zuby Ejiofor and Kadary Richmond, the nets were finally cut down. Rick Pitino promised St. John's would be back, he guaranteed it...he was right.

St. John's are double champs, the conference, the tournament.

Stop me if you heard this one before, St. John's blew a second half lead again. A big opportunity presented itself in the form of a quad 1 road opportunity. St. John's took a lead into halftime, and when the game restarted St. John's, as they have all year, did not come out with any fire and ended up losing. Porous defense, Josh Oduro, and not a single made three for the second straight time in the 2nd half led to the 11th loss of the season. The hope for things to change in Queens is dwindling in year 1 of the Rick Pitino era.

Eye on the Storm - Episode 87: Johnnies No Show In Jersey
play

01/19/24 • 33 min

St. John's once again proved that the Prudential Center was a house of horrors, getting their doors blown off for the second consecutive game, and dropping their second game in a row this season, 80-65. The game wasn't competitive for the most part as St. John's basically went through the motions until the final buzzer sounded. With Rick Pitino and Jordan Dingle both out with COVID, St. John's as a whole looked to be under the weather as well.

St. John's kicked off the Charleston Classic with a nail bitter of a win over North Texas 53-52. After a hot start, the Johnnies offense hit a brick wall and it took great team defense and some late Joel Soriano free throws to win. Next up for the Red Storm was the Dayton Flyers which started out much better for St. John's, things went well in the first half, and then it all fell apart in the 2nd half mainly because of the fouls, and poor defense. Dayton beat St. John's 88-81.
We react from Charleston as St. John's falls to 2-2 on the season and will play in the 3rd place game on Sunday.

A disappointing season came to a close on Saturday afternoon after a comeback effort fell short against the best team in the Big East. After being down by 19 early in the first half, St. John’s fought back valiantly to make it a tight game with seconds left.
We’ll touch on the UConn loss at MSG and how their fans infiltrated the Garden and what happens next for St. John’s as the next few weeks will be busy it seems. The Big East Tournament starts on Wednesday as St. John’s will face Butler at 3pm.

In front of a sold out Carnesecca Arena St. John's was looking to make it 14-0 on Bobblehead night. They fought back from down double digits but turnovers, lobs and wide open threes were all catalysts in what would end up a 77-67 loss to the Creighton Bluejays.
The loss is just another chapter in a frustrating season where multiple players were suspended prior to the game as the rollercoaster of a year is nose diving to a finish.

Eye on the Storm - Episode 114: The Red White Scrimmage at MSG
play

10/10/24 • 36 min

On October 7th, the Johnnies headed to their home away from home, Madison Square Garden to get familiarized with The Mecca. In a Red vs White scrimmage in front of NIL Donors and some media, we got our first glimpse at Rick Pitino's year two squad. With a pep talk from Carl Banks, the Red Storm gave fans plenty to talk about. Who stood out, what were the main takeaways and more as we're joined by Kevin Connelly from Storm the Paint.

St. John's looked good for 20 minutes and then it didn't. After giving up 96 points to Marquette, the Red Storm dropped to 11-5, 1-4 with a four game losing streak. The same issues have plagued the team in those four losses and adjustments are simply not being made.
Frustration has boiled over for the fans, as everyone is wondering where is the defense? Where is the coaching? and When will the losing end? I try to answer some of these riddles but your guess is as good as mine.

It's been 24 years but St. John's knocked off the 4 seed Seton Hall Pirates on Thursday afternoon at MSG to advance to Friday night of the Big East Tournament. It was a 19 point drubbing, a balanced effort that powered St. John's. They turned Seton Hall over, they dominated on the glass and left no doubt who the better team was on the floor. Next up is UConn at 5:30pm on Friday as St. John's looks to shock the world and keep this 6 game winning streak alive.

Rick Pitino is assembling one of the top transfer portal haul's in college basketball for a second straight off-season. Joined by Kevin Connelly of StormThePaint.com we discuss the major addition of Ian Jackson, what he brings to St. John's, can he play point guard and so much more. With two big time players already added, a busy 10 days in Queens saw St. John's get commitments from sharpshooter Stanford transfer Oziyah Sellers and New York native and McDonalds All-American Ian Jackson.

The emphasis on reshaping the St. John's offense is apparent as Coach Pitino and the staff have loaded up with fire power. Jackson and Sellers are both elite three point shooters who should compliment each other well on the floor. Adding them with Joson Sanon and Bryce Hopkins gives St. John's a lot to work with especially when you add in First Team All-Big East member, captain Zuby Ejiofor.

Discussing the additions, plus the departures and rumors, plus what else is on the horizon this offseason and more!
