Franz Schubert: “When I wished to sing of love, it turned to sorrow. And when I wished to sing of sorrow, it was transformed for me into love.” Robert Schumann: “To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts – such is the duty of the artist.” Franz Liszt: “Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words.”

At 1 am on December 5 he died suddenly and unexpectedly. His corpse was consecrated in a cheap coffin and brought to the St. Marx Cemetery outside Vienna without any funeral cortege. Only the undertaker kept him company as the corpse, covered in a linen cloth, was lowered into a simple grave with five other deceased. The exact spot remains unknown. A monument, erected many years after his death at St. Marx Cemetery, commemorates the great composer and musician.
