Welcome to the one hundred and fifth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about where Australian expats should direct their surplus cash - to their super fund, pay off their mortgage, in a investment account or put it into a term deposit. The answer maybe one, two or all of the above and what you chose will be dictated based on your liquidity requirements as well as the intentions of the funds. The other large considersation are the tax consequences. Paying off your mortgage may make you feel good but what about when you get the tax bill at the end of the financial year. What are the tax implications of either strategy? In this episode we run through the following topics: • Pros and cons of putting money in superannuation • Pros and cons of paying off a mortgage or putting excess funds in a offset account? • Pros and cons of setting up an investment account • Pros and cons of putting money in a term deposit Links that we discussed in this episode include: • Upcoming Webinars - https://atlaswealth.com/events • Facebook Group - Don't forget to join our Australian Expat Financial Forum Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Australianexpatfinancialforum • Ask Atlas - Have your questions answered on the podcast by clicking this link - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/questions-or-feedback-for-the-expat-podcast/ • Expat Mortgage Podcast - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/expat-mortgage-podcast/ If you like the content make sure you let us know by hitting the thumbs up and subscribing as well as providing some feedback in the comments below. Welcome to the ninety fourth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about the upcoming referendum that is being held in Australia next month and whether an Australian expat can and should vote. According to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) an Australian expat is eligible to vote as an Overseas Elector as long as they are an Australian citizen over the age of 18 and are intending to return to Australia within the next 6 years. The next question is whether an Australian expat should vote and here we are not referring to them exercising their right to vote but moreso will it cause further complications with respect to their claim of being a non-resident for tax purposes with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Under the current tax residency rules if you were to vote the question of whether you would be classified as a tax resident is very grey and is one of the reasons the proposed tax residency have been recommended. In this episode we run through the following topics:  • Can a Australian expat register to vote? • How does a Australian expat vote? • Where can a Australian expat vote? • Will voting as a Australian expat affect my non-residency status with the ATO? Links that we discussed in this episode include: • Proposed Changes to Expat Tax Residency Rules - https://atlaswealth.com/news/changes-to-the-australian-tax-residency-rules-affecting-expats/ • Facebook Group - Don't forget to join our Australian Expat Financial Forum Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Australianexpatfinancialforum • Ask Atlas - Have your questions answered on the podcast by clicking this link - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/questions-or-feedback-for-the-expat-podcast/ • Expat Mortgage Podcast - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/expat-mortgage-podcast/ If you like the content make sure you let us know by hitting the thumbs up and subscribing as well as providing some feedback in the comments below. Welcome to the one hundred and seventh episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about when does an Australian expat need to lodge a tax return. There is a lot of conflicting information out there about this topic which causes the confusion amongst expats and the answer is that some Australians do need to lodge tax returns whilst others don't. Typically you are taxed in Australian on what is called Australian sourced income (for example rental income, termination payouts, deferred income from employer shares etc) so if you have earned this type of income you will have to lodge a tax return. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Does an Australian expat need to lodge a tax return? • What qualifies as Australian sourced income? • What if my trading platform or bank does not know I am overseas? • Is a HECS/HELP debt lodgement the same as a tax return? Links that we discussed in this episode include: • Upcoming Webinars - https://atlaswealth.com/events • Facebook Group - Australian Expat Financial Forum Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Australianexpatfinancialforum • Ask Atlas - Have your questions answered on the podcast by clicking this link - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/questions-or-feedback-for-the-expat-podcast/ • Expat Mortgage Podcast - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/expat-mortgage-podcast/ If you like the content make sure you let us know by hitting the thumbs up and subscribing as well as providing some feedback in the comments below. Welcome to the eighty eighth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about the new super changes which are now in effect for the 2024 financial year. These changes impact current contribution amounts and caps, superannuation balances as well as what we can have in account based pension mode. The recent changes allow Australians to get more into their Superannuation funds, which is great news yet indexation was not applied to a lot of contribution types. We also discussed the notion of ‘Use it or lose it’ which applies to the catch up concessional contribution strategy, which has been in place since the 2019 financial year. Lastly, the downsizer contribution eligibility age has now been dropped to 55, which gives expats a greater chance to boosting super before age 60. In this episode we run through the following questions: • What the Transfer Balance Cap (TBC) is? • The changes applying to the TBC and what it means for those last minute contributions. • What the indexation means for the Concessional and Non-Concessional contribution caps? • An example of the catch-up concessional contribution strategy in practice • How the downsizer contribution operates and what the opportunity means for expats, as well as a brief client example. Welcome to the one hundred and eighteenth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about why Australian expats need to respond to the banks in Australia when they ask for identification. Many Australian banks are emailing their customers, including Australian expats overseas, asking for them to verify themselves by providing documents to verify their identity. Unfortunately in today's age where cyber crime is rife people are chosing to ignore these emails or alternatively don't believe they have to provide these documents which unfortunately leads to their account being locked. A raft of legislation has been passed by governments around the world that now makes it a legal requirement for banks and financial services companies to request this information in order to combat money laundering and terrorism financing. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Why do they want these documents? • What is the common reporting standard (CRS)? • How do I ensure the request is legitimite?
