Ep. 8: Cancer and Aging - Interviewing Dr. Christin Burd
04/06/23 • 29 min
Today's guest is Dr. Christin Burd!
Dr. Christin Burd is an Associate Professor at Ohio State University, and a member of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program at the OSUCCC – James, where her research focuses on improving our understanding of the connections between cancer and aging. We talk about her start in her chosen field, research, challenges and breakthroughs, and advice for people who want to get started in her field! Her areas of expertise include aging, genetically engineered mouse models, and melanoma.
Her lab is interested in the identification and dissection of genetic mechanisms involved in cancer and aging. Using molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture, mouse models and human tissue samples they aim to promote healthy aging and aid in the prevention, detection and treatment of melanoma.
Her team’s goal is to bridge bench science and clinical trials. Recent work from her lab examines how aging of the immune system is impacted by different cancer therapies and may influence drug toxicity and patient outcomes.
She has developed several state-of-the-art genetically engineered models that allow scientists to track the formation and progression of spontaneous cancers and test melanoma prevention strategies. Additionally, she was the first in Ohio to receive a prestigious Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award. This award funds her ongoing research to develop new models and methods to combat tumors with a RAS gene mutation.
Her work is featured in numerous well-respected journals, including Cell, Nature Medicine, Cancer Discovery, Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research, and Molecular Cancer Research.

Ep. 7: Epigenetics
The idea of epigenetics has changed since it was first proposed in 1939 by Conrad Waddington as a way to reconcile the conflicting theories of preformist and epigenetic schools, but the definition of epigenetics has changed, it's still the subject of intense controversy. One of the most intriguing modern concepts in genetics is the epigenome, which serves as a link between the genome and the phenotype. The epigenome is so highly innovative that it has the potential to change our current understanding of heredity and evolution.
Even two people with identical DNA can have very different personalities. For cells, the same holds true. The same set of 20,000 genes are present in every cell in your body, including the skin cells in your toes and the retinal cells in your eyes. The cornerstone for each cell's identity, however, is provided by this common genetic blueprint.
Few other technical scientific topics have recently captivated the public's interest like epigenetics has. The "epigenetic revolution" and claims that epigenetics undermines our knowledge of evolution are frequently discussed in headlines. What exactly is epigenetics then? How does it operate? Why is it important? And is it the future of personalized healthcare?

Ep. 9: The Birth and Evolution of Stars
In this episode, I want you to imagine a star, as I guide you through it's life cycle! There are about 200 billion trillion stars in the universe, 100 billion stars in the Milky Way, including the sun, and 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. Incredible isn’t it? Think of these numbers, the next time you look up at the night time sky, and imagine the surreal lengths of the universe. But today, I'm going to focus solely on its stars, the very blocks on which galaxies are built.
