1988 brought one of the worst and costliest droughts in US history, causing almost $60 billion in damages and contributing to some of the worst blowing dust events. In addition to drought two record-setting heat waves that led to multiple days of 90-plus degree days. The heat waves led to the deaths of between 4,800 and 17,000 people.
