Voices.com Apologized... Now What?
Everyday VOpreneur with Marc Scott
03/14/24 • 28 min
Imagine my surprise when I showed up to watch The Famous Online Casting Panel at VO Atlanta recently and found Jay O'Connor, the Interim CEO of Voices.com sitting on stage preparing to take questions.
The panel did NOT disappoint.
Thank you, J. Michael Collins for organizing it, and the Anna Collins for making it a part of the VO Atlanta lineup.
A lot of voice actors have some pretty strong feelings about Voices[dot]com (myself included), and most of those feelings are not positive. Previous management seemingly did everything humanly possible to alienate the voice over community... their very customers... through unethical business practices.
Many top talent abandoned the site, and representatives from Voices[dot]com were basically ousted from participating in industry events.
Is that about to change?
I'll confidently say, a first step has been taken.
In this episode, I share a few thoughts and takeaways from the panel, along with a cautious optimism for changes to come that started with an apology to the community from the CEO.

The Real Reason Online Casting Isn't Working For You with Brad Hyland
Everyday VOpreneur with Marc Scott
05/30/24 • 61 min
Maybe Online Casting sites don't hate you after all? We may hate the algorithms and the business practices and the Terms of Use on some of these sites, but what if that's not the real reason you're not booking and finding success with these platforms?
Brad Hyland is a very successful voice actor, and online casting is one of the places he's booking consistently. He reached out after the "Online Casting Sites Hate You" episode and said he wanted to make a counterpoint. I welcomed his perspective and knew I'd learn something.
The sites may be flawed, but if you're not booking, it may not be their fault. Brad and I dive deeper into what voice actors need to understand about how these sites work, and how to make them work.

What Every Voice Actor Needs to Know About A.I. with NAVA
Everyday VOpreneur with Marc Scott
01/18/24 • 61 min
A.I. isn't coming to the voice over industry. It's already here. The challenge for voice actors now is, how will we engage and respond as a community and industry.
One of the organizations speaking on our behalf is NAVA (National Association of Voice Actors). They are deeply engrained in numerous conversations including with SAG/Aftra and various levels of government
In this wide-ranging interview, I speak with Tim Friedlander (NAVA Founder and President) and Carin Gilfry (NAVA Co-Founder and Vice President). We dive into what NAVA is doing, what voice actors need to know and understand about A.I. in our industry and also, how we, as a voice acting community can support NAVA in their ongoing efforts.

5 Big Changes on LinkedIn
Everyday VOpreneur with Marc Scott

Marc Scott discusses five important changes that have occurred on LinkedIn in 2024.
He highlights the new 'People You May Know' feature on the profile page, the limitation on personal notes for free users, the introduction of AI capabilities for premium users, the changes to hashtags, and the impact of posting external links.
He also mentions a bonus feature, which is the potential introduction of a video feed on LinkedIn. These changes have significant implications for voice actors using LinkedIn for marketing their business.

KEY TAKEAWAYS- The 'People You May Know' feature on the LinkedIn profile page is a helpful tool for finding new leads, but its effectiveness depends on how you use LinkedIn for your voice over business.
- LinkedIn now limits free users to five personal notes per month, but you can still send connection requests without a personal note and follow up with a message after the request is accepted.
- Consider upgrading to a premium LinkedIn profile to access AI capabilities that can assist with messaging, content creation, and personalized messages for celebrations.
- Hashtags on LinkedIn are being phased out as AI technology is used to determine the content of posts and push them to the right audience. Focus on including relevant keywords in your posts instead.
- Posting external links on LinkedIn can reduce organic reach, so consider uploading videos and content natively to the platform to maximize visibility.
- LinkedIn is testing a video feed feature, making it a potential platform for video creators to explore and share their content.

Online Casting Sites Hate You
Everyday VOpreneur with Marc Scott
05/23/24 • 33 min
Online casting sites have been taking advantage of voice actors for years. How do we respond? By continuing to fork over membership fees.
These same casting sites are only getting worse in their practices. Part of me feels like they're just testing the boundaries. "How much can we get away with before the voice actors catch on and take action?"
Well, apparently they can get away with a lot!
From extortion level commissions to punishing algorithms to terms of use asking for everything but your first born child, the only thing that stays the same is the membership fees keep getting paid and voice actors keep letting sites get away with it.
So who's to blame? The online casting sites? Or the voice actors themselves?
