Every Breath Counts - 32. 5 Best Foods to Feed Your Brain | Dr. Delia McCabe
play

08/17/21 • 65 min

Weighing about 3 pounds in the average adult, the brain is about 60% fat. The remaining 40% is a combination of water, protein, carbohydrates and salts. The brain itself is a not a muscle. It contains blood vessels and nerves, including neurons and glial cells. – John’s Hopkins Medicine

So if 60% of your brain is fat, are you feeding it the right fats to promote structural health and optimal function?

Most people don’t realize that the structure and the function of the brain are intimately interconnected.

Delia McCabe

Dr. Delia McCabe has dedicated her career to understanding how to nourish high functioning brains. We discuss, not only the necessary dietary foods, but also exercises and lifestyles that promote optimal function.

This episode was one of the most informational episodes you’ll hear and is chock full of strategies and actionable habits to stay at the top of your game.
What you will learn from this episode

  • What the brain is made of and how to build a stronger structure
  • The importance of fat for brain health
  • How you should consider macro nutrients
  • The importance of the brain/gut connection and how to eat for health
  • The 5 best foods to feed your brain
  • How and why you need to “work out” your brain
  • The impact of stress on brain health
  • How sleep, sex and sweat improve brain function

About Delia
Delia shifted her focus from conventional talking therapy, after completing her Masters in Psychology. She had discovered that what we eat impacts brain function directly, and came to understand that until the brain is properly nourished no amount of talking can support optimal cognitive functioning.

Delia has since immersed herself in the fascinating world of nutritional neuroscience and offers a focused, insightful, evidence-based approach into how specific foods can improve our mood, concentration, memory and learning ability and help us manage stress and remain calm and happy in our busy, stressful world, regardless of our age!

Delia received her PhD from Adelaide Medical School and her present research focus is on the neurobiology of stress and nutrition.

Delia’s knowledge about the brains requirements for
optimal well being, her enthusiasm for sharing complex science in an easy-to-understand format, and her ability to share practical and actionable steps with her audience, make her a speaker that keeps her audience engaged and enthralled from start to finish.

People who attend Delia’s events and workshops describe them as ‘extremely engaging, enlightening, fascinating, and motivational!’

Delia’s first book, ‘Feed Your Brain – 7 Steps to a Lighter, Brighter You!’ explains the science behind nutrition and brain health and was released mid-2016.

Delia’s second book, ‘Feed Your Brain – The Cookbook’ was released in November 2017, and takes the science into your kitchen to enable the creation of delicious, brain-supportive meals.

Every Breath Counts - Become a better leader with FBI Spyhunter Scott Olson
play

05/18/21 • 66 min

A common interview question revolves around opportunity for growth within a company. This is something that I have spoken to numerous young professionals about. While the answer varies from company to company, my initial response is always the same; if you act treat your current position like it’s your own business, you will be a leader on day 1.

Scott described this beautifully in our discussion by saying that an individual must become a leader when they run out of bandwidth to perform their daily activities without assistance. This is a powerful idea, because it empowers everyone to take on as much responsibility as they desire, and then scale their actions to achieve the highest level of success. This means that your achievements will directly coorelate to your goals and your effort.

I encourage anyone that wants to be a leader, to treat your current position as though you are the CEO of your own job. Set goals and strategy, execute the strategy and scale the results. You will be amazed by how much you are able to accomplish with this mindset!
Scott began leading high performance teams in consequential environments as a teenager when he landed a job as a climbing guide on Mt. Rainier in Washington State. After eight years leading in the outdoors, and having completed college and Law School, he embarked on a lengthy career in government.

Over several decades Scott served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney and as an FBI Special Agent. Scott was a Counterintelligence operations officer, an Assistant Special Agent in Charge of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, and lived in the Middle East as the FBI’s Legal Attaché in Baghdad, Iraq.

Scott’s core expertise is in building and leading high performance teams. In addition, he has successfully coached emerging leaders across many disciplines including the security industry, non-profits, government, transitioning veterans and intelligence community leaders, the culinary industry, Tae Kwon Do age group national champions, and MMA fighters.

Scott also developed and implemented the FBI’s front-line Leadership Development Program and the FBI’s leadership performance assessment process for Special Agents in Charge.

Scott is a member of ASIS and SHRM, holds a B.A. in History from the University of Washington and a Juris Doctor from the Seattle University School of Law.

My guest today is Marty Strong. Marty has been a leader and business consultant for decades, first in uniform as a combat-decorated Navy SEAL, and then in commercial business. Marty is the author of 2 fictional series, The time warrior sagas, and the SEAL strike series, before releasing his newest book, Be Nimble – How the Creative Navy SEAL Mindset Wins on the Battlefield and in Business.

We talked about the differences in people that do and don’t make it through seal training, what it takes to finish any mission, the specific mindset it takes to lead others and so much more.
