Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 3rd November. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
VOLKSWAGEN ID.5 ELECTRIC CAR WILL RIVAL TESLA MODEL Y IN 2022
- VOLKSWAGEN has taken the covers off its new ID.5 electric SUV-coupé, which features sleeker styling, a 323-mile range and slightly upgraded tech compared to its ID.4 sibling. Both models could be considered rivals to the Tesla Model Y, which arrives in the UK from early 2022, as well as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6
- As the ID.5 is based on the same underpinnings as the recently-launched VW ID.4, the engineering and overall footprint is the same. It’s only in profile and from the rear that the ID.5’s visual differences become apparent; rather than a truncated hatchback rear end, the ID.5’s roofline slopes down towards a rear spoiler atop the boot-lid.
- One key difference between the ID.5 and ID.4 is that the former gets just a single (77kWh) battery option. The range is divided into three basic levels when it comes to powertrains — Pro, Pro Performance and GTX.
- In Pro and Pro Performance models, a single electric motor drives the rear wheels delivering 172bhp and 201bhp, respectively. At the top of the tree, the GTX gets dual motors, one acting on the front axle and the second on the rear, making it all-wheel drive. Total power output of the GTX is 295bhp, which is enough to propel it from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds — over a second slower than the Tesla Model Y Long Range and 2.6 seconds slower than the Model Y Performance.

Volkswagen ID.5 and ID.5 GTX: price, specs and release data
- While the ID.4 can charge at a maximum of 120kW, the ID.5 accepts up to 135kW of power. That means an 80% top-up at a fast-charger takes just 26 minutes, compared to 35 minutes for the ID.4. VW’s other ID. models will soon be able to charge at the higher rate, as the brand is rolling out an update.
- Coupe-SUVs command a premium over the boxier models on which they’re based, so you can expect the ID.5 to start from around £47,000. You’ll be able to order the Volkswagen ID.5 in early 2022 and at that point we should have full prices and specifications.

VW ID.5 RWD And ID.5 GTX AWD Electric Crossover Coupes Are Here
- Customers who will opt for the ID.5 GTX will need to settle for a lower estimated range of 480 km (298 miles) compared to the RWD models, but the performance gains and all-weather capability appear worth the upgrade. The ID.5 GTX also features some subtle design upgrades over the regular ID.5, including sportier bumpers (with integrated DRLs at the front), IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, LED taillight clusters with a 3D design, dual-tone paints, and a performance-themed cockpit.
- The VW ID.5 and ID.5 GTX will launch in Europe in early 2022, but the automaker said nothing of a US debut. However, the dual-motor AWD powertrain of the ID.5 GTX is already available stateside in the ID.4 AWD Pro and Pro S.

TESLA PLANT COULD THREATEN YOUR FUTURE, VW CEO TELLS GERMAN WORKERS
- Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess urged German workers to prepare for a deeper overhaul to remain competitive when Tesla Inc. ramps up vehicle production at its first European factory outside Berlin next year.
- Tesla is swiftly improving quality and looks set to achieve a production time of just 10 hours per car at its Gruenheide plant, Diess said Thursday in a prepared speech at a staff meeting in Wolfsburg.
- VW’s new works council chief Daniela Cavallo called on Diess to focus his attention on resolving the persistent chip shortage that hit VW harder than Tesla or BMW AG instead of engaging in social media activities.
- “I’m often being asked why I keep comparing us with Tesla; I know that it...

RIVIAN TARGETS $53BN VALUATION IPO
- Rivian, the electric automotive company backed by Amazon, is targeting a valuation as high as $53bn when it makes its debut on the Nasdaq, potentially as soon as next week. At the top end of its range of $57-$62 a share, Rivian would begin trading at a value higher than the likes of carmakers Kia and Nissan, and would raise just less than $8.4bn from the offering.
- Amazon ranked as Rivian’s largest outside shareholder, with a 22.4 per cent stake.
- The market debut would also result in a windfall for founder RJ Scaringe, which owns more than 17.6m shares that would be worth a total of $1.1bn at the top of the price range.

- Rivian Automotive Inc, which is backed by Amazon.com Inc, is targeting a valuation of more than $53 billion for its U.S. debut, making the electric vehicle manufacturer potentially almost as valuable as rival Honda Motor. The startup is looking to raise up to $8.4 billion, setting it up to be the third-largest initial public offering (IPO) by funds raised in the past decade in the United States.
- While Rivian has yet to sell any significant volume of its electric vans or trucks, it could likely be valued higher than Ferrari, although less than Honda, General Motors or its backer Ford Motor Co.
Original Source : https://uk.news.yahoo.com/ev-startup-rivian-backed-amazon-205736630.html
- Rivian is filling a spot in the EV market that no other company has yet filled: off-road vehicles such as trucks and SUVs. This gives the company an advantage over giants like Tesla, Ford and General Motors, who have announced plans for electric truck development but haven’t yet released a product.
- None of Rivian’s financial information such as revenue or profit is yet available for investors to view and it will only be released with the S1 filing when the company is about to IPO. This means that investors often have to decide quickly whether they want to trade on the IPO date.

- Rivian first published its papers to go public in August, then aiming for a valuation of around $70 billion. Rivian has lost $2 billion since the start of last year, underscoring the costs and risks of developing electric vehicles. It expects to spend roughly $8 billion on facilities and equipment through the end of 2023.

TESLA STOCK FALLS AS ELON MUSK SAYS HERTZ SALE NOT CONFIRMED
- Tesla CEO Elon Musk insisted no formal contract has been signed with Hertz, after the car rental company announced a deal to buy 100,000 electric vehicles in an overhaul of its fleet.
- The deal, announced Oct. 25, sent Tesla stock soaring to an all-time high and pushed its valuation above $1 trillion for the first time.
However, responding to a tweet about the blockbuster rally, Musk said Monday evening, “If any of this is based on Hertz, I’d like to emphasize that no contract has been signed yet.”
- Musk’s dose of cold water on the deal sent Tesla stock down over 5 percent to $1,147.64 by 6:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. The stock’s still up more than 12 percent since the announcement of the Hertz deal.
- a Hertz spokeswoman, insisted in a statement, “Deliveries of the Teslas already have started. As we announced last week, Hertz has made an initial order of 100,000 Tesla electric vehicles and is investing in new EV charging infrastructure across the company’s global operations,”

TESLA GIGA BERLIN SEES DELAY FOR CONSTRUCTION, ELON MUSK SAYS ITS NOT RIGHT
- The Tesla Gigafactory Berlin is seeing another delay in its construction as the State Environmental Agency and the Brandenburg Administrative Court re-opens the discussion regarding the plant. Here, Elon Musk said that what they are doing is "not right," especially as the operations and processes in the plant also see a hindrance.
- The Tesla CEO has said his side on the issue via his official Twitter page, saying that what the agencies and involved people of authority are doing is "not right."
- the State Environmental Agency and the Brandenburg Administrative Court are delaying Giga Berlin's construction and re-opening the discussion regarding its future. The bodies are concerned with the future of the plant, especially the upcoming lawsuits that it would face once operational.
- the focus of the concerned authorities is on environmental protection, particularly with the supply of water needed by the surrounding population. Also, there are plenty more environmental reasons that were cited by the committee though these are not yet the full reasons why they hinder Tesla Gigafactory Berlin's construction.

8,116 NEW ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN NORWAY OVER OCTOBER
- In Norway, 8,116 new electric cars were registered in October. Electric vehicles accounted for 70.1 per cent of all new registrations in the month. The most successful model across all drive types was the VW ID.4 with 913 registrations.
- The fact that October 2021 is significantly lower than September with its 13,946 new electric car registrations is probably mainly due to Tesla’s delivery practices.
- The 8,116 electric cars were joined by 2,226 plug-in hybrids in October, with a market share of 19.2 per cent (down 6.2 per cent from October 2020). In total, 89.3 per cent of all new passenger cars in Norway had an external charging connection in October – in August this figure was 87.7 per cent, in September with the Tesla boost mentioned even 91.2 per cent.
