Many successful investors credit their success to ongoing learning and education, but if you’re riding the share market solo, where do you start? Equity ASA is brought to you by the Australian Shareholders’ Association to help you stay informed and to build financial knowledge through current, topical and expert interviews about investing, corporate governance and the share market. This podcast is produced and presented by Phil Muscatello from Shares for Beginners. Phil is a highly experienced media producer who has worked at the ABC, Triple-J, 2Triple-M & 2SM as well as producing corporate media for clients like CBA, ING Bank and Pfizer among others. The ASA is Australia's largest, independent, not-for-profit individual investor association, bringing experience, scale and expertise to the table when it comes to looking after the needs of retail investors. We’re passionate about keeping the market fair for the everyday, independent investor, and we’ve been doing just that since 1960. This podcast is for information and educational purposes only. It isn’t financial advice, as we don’t know your personal financial situation. You shouldn’t buy or sell any investments based on what you’ve heard here. Any opinion or commentary is the view of the speaker only. This podcast doesn’t replace professional advice regarding your personal financial needs, circumstances or current situation.

Sir Ronald Cohen - The Impact Revolution
Equity ASA
09/10/21 • 32 min
Sir Ronald Cohen is an Egyptian-born British businessman, who fled his birthplace with his family in 1957, following the Suez Crisis, with only £10 to their name. Despite his family’s economic struggles, Sir Ronald’s hard work saw him win a scholarship to Oxford and then attend Harvard Business School.
Referred to by the British press as ‘the father of British venture capital’ and ‘the father of social investment’, he is now leading the Impact Revolution – a movement seeking to achieve real social and environmental change. With an impressive background in management consulting, venture capitalism, and social investments, Sir Ronald has a compelling perspective on how to reshape capitalism.
We spoke about his Harvard Business School research into impact weighted accounts. This research measured the environmental impacts from the operations of 3,000 companies and found 450 of them create more damage than profit, 1,000 create damage equivalent to 25% of their profit, and 2/3 create damage less than 25% of their profit. Sir Ronald believes changing the world and making a profit go hand in hand. He says investors should put money into the hands of those who do good and do well at the same time.

"There are so many new platforms that are popping up these days. The newest brokers focus on US stocks. So now we've got a whole bunch of zero brokerage, US trading platforms out there. You might have seen eToro, we've got Stake, which launched a couple of years ago - that was the first in Australia to launch zero brokerage trading. So that's very low fees and you can invest smaller amounts with US stocks. They tend to be focused towards that kind of younger audience, that kind of Wall StreetBets audience that we see in the US. The Robin Hood investors where it's very minimalist design offering quick trades on your phone. They tend to be optimised for mobile, and that's the angle they tend to push. You want to trade GameStop or, or Facebook or whatever, you can make a quick trade so fast."
