Josh, Tim, and Rachel answer your questions!

Questions:

  1. This question from Ellen on the forum prompts a larger discussion of labels that pro-life and pro-choice people use for either side, what precisely is so wrong with “pro-abort,” as well as labels used for the unborn: “I think a good thing to discuss on the podcast or just here on the forum is issues within the movement and how we should approach them . . . Also, dealing with people who are super entrenched in some of the habits mentioned in module one. I know several people who can’t talk about abortion without using terms like “deathscort” and “pro-abort.”
  2. Ellen: “Another one that comes to mind is how many major pro-life organizations both nationally and locally feel the need to also include topics such as traditional marriage as part of their message. I’m a Christian myself so I don’t even necessarily disagree with their views on this, but it just seems like a weird, unrelated thing to bring up. It makes it difficult for me to involve my atheist, LGBT friends in pro-life events.”
  3. Malessa from Australia: “When having discussions about the equality of the pre-born, do you get push back about equality of homosexuals? I know these are two very different discussions, and no one is talking about killing homosexuals because they are unequal/not human, but I imagine the ‘marriage equality’ topic may come up in conversations. Maybe not so much in the US since the Supreme Court ruling, but here in Australia same-sex marriage is still not recognized/legally valid relationship, so I imagine someone calling me some sort of hypocrite if I use the word “equality” and yet am against SSM.”
  4. Jason: “How do you respond to a friend who has had a lot of good experiences at Planned Parenthood and says that she will support them no matter what?”

Josh's favorite Christian apologist, Dr. Randal Rauser, joins the show. Randal describes himself as "progressively Evangelical and generously Orthodox." Josh asks him about open-mindedness, his observations about the pro-life movement, when it's appropriate to call leaders out publicly, and the difference between an "agitation apologetics model" and an "agreement apologetics model."

While Josh doesn't agree with everything Rauser believes, that's not the point, and this isn't a debate episode. Josh found this to be a good opportunity to listen to the views of a very careful thinker in spite of the fact that they don't agree on everything within the abortion debate.

Equipped for Life Podcast - #12: Example Dialogues: Pro-Life Josh and Pro-Choice Tim
play

09/13/19 • 51 min

While Rachel Crawford was in town we spontaneously decided to record some improvised roleplay dialogues as well as some post-roleplay commentary. Nothing was scripted out, but it ended up going really well so we decided to turn them into podcast episodes. In this episode you’ll hear Tim play the pro-choice side against Josh, as well as our discussions afterward about what Josh did well and what could have been better.

Josh, Tim, and Rachel Crawford finish their discussion on relational apologetics. In this episode we focus on multiple arguments for doing this as well as 12 practical tips:

  1. Don’t be a jerk.
  2. Avoid long public Facebook debates. Start with email but try to eventually move to Skype or in person.
  3. Don’t think of this as a war. Daniel Cohen at TED: “If argument equals war, then learning equals losing.”
  4. Be obviously open-minded.
  5. Don’t think of the other person as your project, or a potential notch for your belt.
  6. Actively work to break down stereotypes about pro-lifers.
  7. Understand the value of arguments.
  8. Don’t just debate issues.
  9. As far as religion goes, don’t hide your beliefs or pretend like it doesn’t influence your position if it does, but also don’t drown them in a faith discussion if they aren’t interested.
  10. Allow the person to remain unconvinced.
  11. It is okay to follow cues and make educated guesses to factor into how you make arguments, but don’t treat even a well-educated guess as hard fact.
  12. If you’ve talked with them extensively, give them the “inside scoop” into your pro-life work.

Josh, Tim and Rachel talk about the reasons that it’s valuable to intentionally be funny while talking about difficult issues with people, and offer several examples of the kind of humor we often use.

They also discuss how to think about Christians making references to R-rated movies, given that some would say that this will “kill your witness.”

Equipped for Life Podcast - #86: ERI LIVE: Q&A with Josh at Fusion City Church
play

01/12/23 • 40 min

Josh Brahm was invited to answer questions about abortion late last year at Fusion City Church in Kannapolis, NC. Pastor Brian Duncan had preached on abortion the week prior and asked Josh to help field the questions that came from the congregation afterward.

*Sorry for the bad audio during the intro. I forgot to grab the better audio before I formatted the SD card.

Chapters:

00:00 Introduction

03:19 Pastor introduces Josh

04:05 Josh summarizes the origin of his pro-life work

05:25 Pastor Brian on self-defense and the right to life

07:40 What if the mother's life is at risk?

11:34 But isn't every pregnancy potentially life-threatening?

17:19 What about cases of rape or incest?

20:24 How would you respond to the argument that the unborn aren't biologically human until they become a fetus?

23:33 "If someone should have the choice to use drugs or have multiple sexual partners, should they also not have the choice to have an abortion?"

26:38 How would you respond to a pro-choice Christian who says this: "My personal issue with the entire Roe v. Wade overturn was not so much the abortion aspect but the loss of bodily autonomy for me and my sisters and daughters. If the movement wasn't so rooted in the dirty word of abortion, I think many people would have an easier time thinking of Pro-Choice as having a choice over one's body which everyone has and almost everyone exercises to some degree. People choose to eat a vegan diet or a carnivore diet, both with very different reactions in the body. People choose to drink energy drinks despite the consequences of heart damage. People choose to be vaccinated or not, both with varying outcomes. People choose to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. People choose to give their boy child a circumcision or not, way before the child is 'self-aware', both offering varying outcomes. Saying "my body, my choice" is not pro-murder. It is pro-autonomy, and I have no issues with that whatsoever."

31:43 What are some areas where pro-life people sometimes don't follow their logic to their natural conclusion?

34:01 Final thoughts

Monica Snyder shares a very emotional story about going undercover in a late-term abortion facility in Washington DC while being 28-weeks pregnant. She talks about what was harder than she expected and the perspective she gained about the employees at the clinic. She also helps Josh understand some things he had never heard about some post-abortive women, and responds to the most frequently asked questions and challenges from both sides of the abortion debate regarding this video.

Editor’s note: As you may remember from a previous editor’s note, we had technical problems on this recording day that went undiagnosed until later because I didn’t think we needed to wear the headphones this time. I did the best I could to fix it, but it’s way below my standards. Thank you for your patience.
