Equipped For Evangelism - Resource Review: Engaging with Muslims
play

05/04/23 • 17 min

Today I work through the book Engaging with Muslims by John Klaassen, published by The Good Book Company in 2015.

You can find it online here: https://www.thegoodbook.com/engaging-with-muslims?gclid=Cj0KCQjwr82iBhCuARIsAO0EAZxeKLPHSfZnzqylJ8zJpoMI9KbEFFUFHGps88WE9-dVhnX2AM5h6JwaAsQlEALw_wcB

Quotes from the book:

“I have never met a Muslim who, after reaching a clear understanding of what sin is, did not confess that he was indeed a sinner and that he had dishonored God in certain aspects of his life.” (pg 24.)

“Practically, what this means is that you must spend time with your friends. You need to be in their homes and they need to be in your home; you may not be able to speak to them at first; you may have trouble communicating, but that is not as important as just being together.” (26).

“Most Muslims are very hospitable. If they invite you, don’t hesitate to say yes. Typical Arab hospitality requires multiple invites, but they might as well get used to western culture–you invite and it’s a yes or no response. So when invited, accept the invitation.” (27-28).

“We pray privately for our Muslim friends and we pray with our Muslim friends for the needs they have. We demonstrate we are people of prayer... Remember, if you have opportunity to pray with a Muslim—always pray in Jesus’ name. Even if a Muslim questions this, emphasize what Jesus taught us about prayer and asking in his name.” (55).

“Once you are accepted as a true friend, you have built a substantial bridge. You want to cross it! You want to get the gospel to your friend in ways that they can best understand. While the P pyramid is built from the bottom up, it is important to say that from the beginning you need to be sharing truth with your friend as much as you can. As you pray with them and as you testify to the things God has done, you will have started to build a foundation upon which you can share the truths of God’s Word.” (61-62).

“To ‘implore’ is to ask with passion, to encourage someone to be reconciled to God. Persuasion must always lead to that time in evangelism where you ask your friends to come to faith. You have talked about faith and you have explained to them that they need Jesus to be true believers—now is that time to ‘implore.’ If you have been diligent with the other P’s, then your relationship should be such that you can share with them in a loving way.. You love them and spend time with them—it should be natural to implore them to follow the Christ!” (65).

“Over the course of the last few years the agency I was with discovered an amazing truth—we don’t see decisions for Jesus where we are not sharing the gospel.” (11-12).

Bible verses cited:

2 Corintians 5:11 “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.”

2 Corintians 5:20 “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

Equipped For Evangelism - Resource Review: 7 Reasons to (Re)consider Christianity
play

02/05/23 • 13 min

In this episode we look at the book 7 Reasons to (Re)consider Christianity by Ben Shaw, published by the good book company in 2021.

We looked quickly at each of the chapters as they give us a reasons to reconsider Christianity:

#1 Because it is worth thinking through what life is about.

Quote used, "Christianity offers some profound and honest answers to our deepest questions and longings." (page 20)

#2 Because Christianity is a lot more intellectually credible than you think.

The survey is cited on page 27.

Shaw's five points:

1. The academic consensus is that Jesus existed as a historical person

2. There are lots of sources both by Christians and non-Christians confirming the events of the Bible.

3. The Bible is specific in its detail.

4. The New Testament accounts were composed within a generation of the events they recorded.

5. The Bible has stayed the same over the centuries

#3 Because Christianity is about life to the full.

#4 Because Christianity gives a compelling answer to the question, ‘what’s wrong with the world?'

Quote from G.K. Chesterton, "Dear sir: Regarding your article ‘What’s wrong with the world?’ I am. Yours Truly."

#5 Because Jesus is arguably the most influential person in history.

#6 Because the death of Jesus is surprisingly good news for you.

#7 Because if Jesus really did raise from the dead, then it would confirm everything.

Book mentioned, A Case for Christ by Lee Stroble.

Post Script:

Quote,

"Yet in the end, far from having been shaken, I can honestly tell you that having this life-threatening illness has actually sharpened and increased my faith. As I stare at the possibility of an early death, I am, in fact, more confident than ever in these things. This book isn’t just an academic argument for me; it’s a very sincere and personal one. Everything in it is written from a deep, road-tested conviction that this stuff matters more than anything else in the world–for me and for you. With this in mind, I really do hope you (re)consider Christianity for yourself." (Page 137)
